"Björneborgarnas Marsch" - (English: March of the Björneborgers)
A Swedish military march from the 18th century by unknown composer. The march is used in Finland since 1918 and is known as Porilaisten Marssi. The Finnish-Swedish poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg used the march to write this text which is included in the poems of Fänrik Ståls Sägner. The text was later translated to Finnish amongst other languages. The painting depicts Georg Carl von Döbeln, a Swedish General known for his efforts in the Finnish War of 1808-1809.

This was one of my favorite marches when i was member of a small German marching band, and esp we drummers like to play this. We called it the "Schwedenmarsch". Unfortunately the band doesnt exist anymore... Glad to hear it again, thx for sharing ✌️👍

How is it "Swedish march" when there are so many references to Finland?

Finland was Sweden for more then 600years.Finland as you know it today didnt exist. The officer on the picture is the legendary Swedish General von Döbeln he never lost a single battle and was always in front of his men.He was chief for Björneborgs regiment during a period.

@@kk-gr3ly The march was used when the Björneborg regiment was in the Swedish army and when Finland was part of Sweden which was until 1809. The text was added after finnish independence so the text is far younger then the march itself

At the time the march was written, Finnish troops had served for centuries for the Swedish King and had a good reputation, kind of rejuvenating The Finnish morale/pre-national identity, even tho in most Finnish songs from this era, or stories a united Finland does not exist and people and heroes are referred mostly by a more specific area, such as Savonia or Tavastia, in this march the reference to Björneborg, in finnish, Pori, it's a city with a long history of hosting a regiment/brigade for the Swedish army. And during this time Finnish troops spoke Finnish among them selves, if they were Finnish speaking Finn's. Official language was Swedish but alot of Swedish speaking nobility, serving as high ranking officers seemed and tended to find it helpful and morale boosting for them to learn Finnish to communicate with their men. One unifying factor of how imperial Swedes and imperial Russians viewed Finn's as soldiers and workers, is hard working and brave, but slow because of our language and more humble style of living in general.

If you can get your hands on a poem (about a 3.5h long read type of poemn collection) The Tales of Ensign Stål, is a good read, it kind of opens up on as Runeberg, our national poet is Swedish speaking, the kind of friendship of the time. It was written in 1920's but takes places during War of Finland 1808-1809. Good stories too with really dark and gloomy sad ones and happy/energetic war stories mixed with humour and kind of silly kindness of the Finn's, with lazyness and indeciveness of Swedish nobles.

Its not really a Swedish march when it was written in Finland by a Finn and the song is about Finns. Only thing Swedish about this is the language. And yes, I know Finland was a part of Sweden for 600 years but it was not anymore when this was written.

"Runeberg" You're spewing bullshit. It's like claiming that Immanuel Kant was Russian because Kaliningrad lies in Russia today. It was made by a swede living in Finland, in Swedish, about Sweden and a part of our country which has been Swedish for over half a millennia

The idea that Finlandswedes are clearly distinct from swedes in Sweden was created in the 19th century after the new nationalistic dream of every state being associated with one group of people. "Ein reich, ein volk", as Hitler put it. The newly created state of Finland had two peoples in it - swedes and finns, and to make the "one state, one people" dream come true, a new identity, "Finlanders" (swedish: "Finländare") was constructed. Before that, finlandswedes were seen as swedes, because they spoke swedish. If you use the older and more true-to-life definition of "swedes", then this song definitely is swedish.
