SWEDISH VS FLEMISH DUTCH - Language Challenge

Swedish guy tries to speak Flemish Dutch while Nenalyzed from Belgium tries to speak Swedish in a language challenge. This is one video in a longer series where I find foreigners or tourists and to make language challenges with. Nenalyzed is however an old youtube friend.

Jeff Morse treu its really easy and flemish ( Belgian) is the same as dutch (Netherlands) english for me was piece of cake really i never have learned iT what so ever but its a lot because of music and tv i think

It should (propably) be: (translating from Google Translate Dutch to normal Dutch is way harder than from English) In deze taaluitdaging probeert een zweedse jongen Vlaams (Nederlands) te spreken, terwijl Nenalyzed uit België Zweeds probeert te spreken. Dit is een video uit een langere serie waarin ik buitenlanders of toeristen vind om ze uit te dagen over taal. Nenalyzed is echter wel een oude KZbin vriend. And later: Bekijk de afspeellijst voor video's over talen: ('Check de afspeellijst...' would also be fine, we most often use the English version instead of the Dutch 'bekijk') If you help me learn Swedish by making video's, I will help you learn Dutch :).

I'm from South Africa and I understand both of your languages, we speak a for of Dutch. We call it Afrikaans. I think it more closely to Flaams, but ,if I take the key words in a sentence, I have a clear understanding of what's been said.

Not trying to be an ass, but her first sentence was wrong. "kijk, daar is een zeldzame pokémon daar" you've already got the "daar" once at the beginning of the sentence, so there's no need to repeat it.

Actually in belgium we often say "daar" twice in a sentence, now that I come to think of it. We say for example "der is daar ..." and "der" means "daar" (or "er"? idk).

My Name Vreemd, ik hoor echt nooit mensen twee keer daar gebruiken in één zin. Der en daar samen in een zin gebruiken doe ik zelf ook wel, maar ik denk dat der meer een synoniem is voor er, of zo gebruik ik het in ieder geval.

Ik denk dat ze die fout vooral maakte vanwege de Engelse zin, waarin wel (grammaticaal correct) twee keer "there" in voorkomt: "There is a rare pokemon over there" En het geval van 'er' en 'der', allebei zijn ze verbasterde vormen van 'daar' :D In het Engels is er die verandering niet gebeurd waardoor 'there' zowel een functiewoord ('er') en een plaatsaanduiding ('daar') is

In Greek the word “look” is koita--pronounced kita. I’m not sure how it’s similar to Flemish and Swedish.

I saw a Swedish interview of A-Ha from 1991 and the accent sounds VERY close to Flemish (kind of between Brugge and Antwerp more or less). I thought there must have been some ethnic mingling there a couple centuries ago. No, it's a southswedish dialect, one of six dialect groups within Swedish. Naturally, I would speak something closer to Danish, the same way as someone from the area close to Finland would talk in a Finnish-related way. Welcome to democratic linguistics.

True but modern English was greatly influenced by North Germanic speaking Viking settlers in the UK. old English Anglo-Saxon or West Saxon died out following the Norman conquest of 1066, in fact it was replaced with Norman French as the official language of England for 200 years. after the ban on English was lifted in the 13th century the version that emerged was a hybrid Anglo-Danish or Anglo-Scandinavian dialect or creole. this Midlands dialect became the ancestor of middle and modern English. the dialect developed around the affluent cities of Leicester, Oxford and Cambridge and spread to London. these areas were traditionally in the Danelaw, the area settled by the Danes in England. This accounts for the simplification of English loss of inflexion and the preponderance of old Norse Germanic terms in modern English as opposed to the Anglo Saxon West Germanic. for example North Germanic 'are' replaced the Anglo-Saxon west germanic 'sindon' (German 'sind, Dutch zijn) and the many doublets of same words that predominate in everyday organic English such as Till (North germanic and To (west germanic) or Shirt and Skirt or scream, low, flat, egg, go etc. the Scandinavian influence also led to the simplification of English grammar which in turn led to English abandoning the old West Germanic word order/syntax and replacing it with a Scandinavian one. Archaeologists and ethnographers are also suggesting that the Anglian dialects of central and northern England may have been early forms of Scandinavian speech and were distinct from the Saxon spoken in the south and west of England. most place names in central eastern and northern England often have a Scandinavian origin rather than continental Saxon.

@papercut: no for a Dutch person with no knowledge of either language Swedish is much closer and easier than English. We Dutch all had to learn English in school for many years. But Swedish many of us can read right away or after a mere week or so of exposure. West and Northern Germanic is nice and theoretically true. But in reality all three Scandinavian languagues were very strongly influenced by plattdutch/plattgerman.

Robin Mangala Finally someone with the facts. I had discussions before about this on YT and even Belgians and Dutch people were telling me I was wrong lol. "Flemish" doesn't even make sense, since every province has it's own dialect. No one here says "I speak Flemish".
