Giles Hanover The words you used are at the heart of the issue. 'Experienced people'. Just because a vet got an education, does not mean they have experience. They just have 'permission' to use drugs. Not cures. Where are the scientists that said GMO food is bad? They got fired, for such HYPOCRISY. Professional farmers have 'permission' to use glyphosate and bovine steroids. That doesn't mean they are ethical farmers. More lawyers and higher hourly rates, have never made law more 'civil'. They just take more out of the system of the people they supposedly help. Farmers are no different. Claiming safe practices, while cancer rates skyrocket in every industrial farming country.

I'm a veterinary technician or whatever they call it in English (I'm Dutch), I've had experience with rabbits and maggots. As far as I could tell from your video, you did a great job with the calf. I'm new to your channel but from what you said, your method of keeping the cows is really well thought out. Sad thing that the internet is full of people that are quick to judge others and think they know better. Anyway, what a cute calf, and what good protective mother cow. I wish you all the best.

Coming from an experienced cattle man with over 40 years in raising cattle, you did just fine. You reacted quickly, you got help from an experienced farmer and he had the medicine you needed to treat it. This was by far faster than calling a Vet to come out which might have taken hours or been the next day. Even here in the US, its nearly impossible to get a VET out to the farm on a minutes notice, your lucky if you can talk to them when you call. I will say they do call back, but that my take an hour or hours before you hear from them depending on what they are involved in at the time. You learned how to handle this and in doing so will be prepared for the next time should it happen again. You are using good rotational practices, you are with your cattle daily and growing your own hay. Your cattle have a far better life than any in a large commercial operation. Please do not let the comments from arm chair or hobby farmers raising nothing more than expensive pets sway you and making you think bad of yourself. I do not want this event to make you reconsider putting out content for everyone to learn from. Hell, I have been raising livestock, farming and gardening for over 56 years now and I have learned a thing or two from you, not to mention learning about your country and way of life. Now I am not able to raise cattle or other large livestock anymore, my age, circumstances and health have made it not possible any more. Sometimes a man has to finally come to grips with what he can or cannot do anymore. But, that's why in my spare time I watch you, I can in a small way relive what I have lost the ability do . For that I thank you and do hope to continue to see you and your family here on You Tube. God Bless you and yours. Mr. Tom

So true, We farm in Kentucky, 12 miles from a large animal practice. They do not do farm visits at all. Plus sadly no one in the office can help with questions. The secretary is absolutely useless. We love the vet himself, he is super good but he is going to retire next year. This vlog is wonderful and I follow it with joy. Young farmers like this give my husband and I hope for agriculture.
@DeepSouthBama56

I live now in Southeast Central Alabama, there is only one VET left in our small southern town and they do not treat large animals, or make farm visits. We had two VETS and the one that did treat large animals retired nearly 15 years ago. SO here if you have farm animals you rely on other experienced farmers or your own experience. Farming here, especially livestock farming is dying off, for the most part all farming is dying off with the exception of forestry. Small livestock operations or food growers are very few and far in between. I just have a small plot of ground left, its my old home place and this year I started clearing it off since it had been neglected for years and severely overgrown. I will not have the land to do large stock, but hope to have my gardens back and producing with a few chickens and rabbits. My goal is to provide for myself since now I am retired and living on a fixed income. But I know from experience and my past that this man did the right thing as quickly as he could of when he found it. He is a good man and a damn good farmer.

Mahealani W. I know I saw the last vedio I felt terrible but he handled it very well I would have cried and jumped on calling every vet, but being in the medical field he did the right thing is to stay calm and work with what he had. He does not have to explain him self to self righteous people who probably never been in a farm. For that person if he was a farmer, he must have some real sickly animals.

I see a lot of them going immediately into solution modus and i would advise everyone to refrain yourself from that. You can do that already to everyone around you in your own personal life. Let alone the fact that there are universal rules but there's always culture and with that practical differences on how to approach any situation. I'm sure an American would act in a different way to this situation then a swedish farmer, or a dutch one, which i know a few of. I wish you well, just stay focused, give all the advice maybe a second but then close it. You're the one farming, not us. Greetings.

Simeon. You are naturally smart and you have been to farming school. I haven't. I see you did a great job with using your mind from what you learned so far and help from your neighbor who knows and I'm so happy for you that you are so capable and you fixed the problem in a few hours. Glad mama took him back. English is your third language. WOW!!! You are smart. Like I said. Don't let yourself get flustered by these ppl who don't know and just judge. I have had to stand my ground, too in the past when I was getting strong suggestions from every area. I just didn't say much so I wouldn't be accused of being mean and kept pushing through the right way as I saw it. I did know what I was doing by my mind's thought about it and I was getting poor advice which would deeply affect my life but not theirs'. They had nothing to lose and I did so the day I learned not to listen to bad advice if I knew the right way, I was free and did much better in life. I will research and take suggestions if the person has an accountable answer why their way correct or they show me a part of my plan that is weak and they have a solution for it.

I want to thank you for saving the life of one of my hens. This is the my first year with chickens. Like you, we in the Pacific Northwest, Washington State-USA, are very hot and dry. We manage flies with Fly Predator larvae and also traps. Still, I had no idea that flies could lay eggs on a live animal. After seeing your piece about Fly strike on your calf, I checked all of my chickens and ducks. I found one hen with maggots eating a hole beneath her vent. Because you are willing to talk honestly about your experience, I checked my birds, recognized and treated this problem and saved her life. No matter what. Thank you Simeon.

All I can say from watching both videos, in full, is how you did a great job in getting rid of the maggots. People who are a keyboard away feel they can say anything they wish, not understanding the consequences of what they say and the reactions it has on others. The world would be a better place if people were more considerate towards others. Also, you have shown more care and support to the calf than some humans with children. Thank you for the videos and good health to all.

IT'S NORMAL... all farmers see this kind of thing. It's laughable that because you don't have a vet there regularly for issues, you aren't a good farmer? It's like friends who are amazed that at 62 I NEVER TAKE MEDICATION.. no cholesterol meds, no BP meds, etc. I tell them if you take care of yourself you don't need doctors or meds. Of course there is always an instance here or there that you are going to seek medical help... you're not stupid. I'm not going to avoid medical care if I truly need it. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! Thank you for stating so clearly my thoughts on vets, and doctors in general. Simeon did what the vet would do and he sought experienced help and info from more farmers who had successfully dealt with this before. He's a very good farmer. And my personal experience with medication is like yours. I'm 65 and haven't been to the doc for 11 years because I don't get sick. My last doc insisted that I was lying to him because he didn't believe that I could be healthy "at my age" without meds. I found a different doc. Eat a 'clean' and well balanced diet with consistent, moderate exercise and docs and meds aren't necessary for good health.

yup.. still kickin ! lol And sitting with some friends/family and listening to them recite which/what meds they take and lining them up along side their dinner plates like their ante-ing up for a geriatric poker game, scares me to death! Same here. I got a doctor and asked her if she "threw pills at problems" or if she was willing to look for a cause first and a natural solution second. She said the later was her option too. Unfortunately for her, she hasn't made much money off of me except for some food allergy testing.. lol. I lost my job recently, along with my health care so I'm going to be even more diligent in staying healthy. Feel very fortunate not to have issues.

I would have to disagree with your comment saying that if you take care of yourself, you don't need doctors or meds. I know of literally thousands of cases where people that take care of themselves with proper lifestyle would be dead without doctors or medications. I'm 61. I'm active, I exercise, keep my weight off, eat well and if I didn't take a daily medication I would eventually develop a cardiomyopathy and die a slow, uncomfortable, premature and preventable death. I do agree that people who take care of themselves need less medical care and less medication. Persons just need to be smart in all that they do.

Good on you Simeon. If farmers in Australia called the vet for every fly-blown cow or sheep, they would all be broke. Farmers know how to deal with these problems, and do so in a way that is in the best interests of the animal. No farmer wants a dead animal, there is no profit in that.

I am so sorry you had to take the time to even make this video but I’m so glad you did! It needed to be said! So many folks are “arm chair experts,” or WORSE make single minded judgements on others based on a few minute video. I honestly think that’s the problem with the entire world. No one is actually listening to each other or paying attention and just jump to unfounded conclusions. Thank you so much for everything you share. For trying to help others and share your knowledge and experiences. What you’re doing is such a blessing to others and the majority of us are very grateful. God Bless you ~Lisa

I understand your frustration with people criticizing who have little or no knowledge of what they are talking about Simeon. You have excellent judgement in your decisions and never having needed a vet in all those years speaks for itself! Natural is always the best recourse, very occasionally may need to just "treat the symptoms" with medicine. Try not to let those ignorant people upset you, you have far more people who love what you are doing than otherwise.

It had to be said! Even we are talking of animals but, it would be like you run to the doctors each times your kid is coughing !!! My family doctor was happy to see my sons only one or two times per year... And for those who are completely disconnected with nature, a farm isn't a unicorns garden, there is life and happyness but not only !

I recently found your videos and I have only watched a few on your calf with the maggots and it's updates but I thought you did an amazing job at handling not only the situation with the calf but also his mother and her reaction(s). I wouldn't pay those ignorant people a second glance because they are just hiding behind a computer screen with their ignorances...some people in this world try to do what is best for their animals, making their lives as natural as possible, and medications and antibiotics included in everything that goes on or in their bodies isn't healthy for them! So just keep doing you because your doing an amazing job and your animals look amazing and are beautiful because of all you are doing!💕

Should I ever read comments? Nope I guess. Have a story instead: On day 21 chickens I raised staret picking on eachother. Didnt know what to do, and went to a lady in the village who has been raising chickens since (kinda) the beginning of times, taking over from grandma etc. She told me they need meat. I told her they eat complete feed with enough protein. She laughed at me and said go get them ant eggs and they'll stop. I went out collecting, and they stopped. Not a single one got hurt after me feeding them ant eggs. So the learning from this story is the importance of knowledge: her knowledge about chicken's behavior, and the knowledge from generations, passed on to her. The industry debeaks them on hatching. The vet might say he doesn't know, maybe there is something with the feed. A good vet might say it's a certaim amino acid deficiency in their diet, almost certainly methionine. This is another type of knowledge. For a farmer it's important to have enough knowledge to act immediately: what to do, to avoid an imminent threat. And yes, she also knew what I learned from you, that predatory birds hunt from bigger trees, waiting for the chicken to enter their ideal 'landing area'. She learned this by loosing a couple of chickens, and observing what is happening in the orchard they roam freely.

You don’t owe anyone an explanation. You do superb husbandry and care for your animals. Your methods are true, the problems with these folks watching your methods have a different paradigm. For years and years we used feed lots, didn’t care about rotational grazing, we weren’t concerned with runoff mitigation or crop rotation, winter forage, winter cover crops. It amazing we did starve. Young Farmers like you are doing far more with a lot less then us old guys did. We would mow and put up hay and we’d graze a field literally to the point of uselessness for the rest of the year. We had no idea about grass management like what’s your doing now. I talk to Farmers now and they look at me like I’m from Mars because I had never heard of looking at the tops of grass. Hay grew so well where I was it wasn’t really a concern, we thought. Your doing a great job, my friend. Don’t let dicks get in your head.

You did all the right things that I, as an animal guardian with 10 years of experience with cows, would have done. Find out what the problem is, talk to your best resources in the world...the old timers in your area who know more than a thing or two! and then the vet's if needed especially for follow up if what you are doing isn't working to the level it should be. Talk to your old-timers people...they are a precious resource that is dying out without being able to share their knowledge and skills!

Many seem to have nothing better to do than criticize others. You have great work you are doing and you are helping us learn by sharing your methods and information. I have heard many long time KZbinrs who have experienced this behavior say to other KZbinrs “Just block and delete” because that removes unhealthy content that neither you or your viewers need and it is interfering with the intent of the work and the learning. The video was very upsetting to see and think that the calf was having the skin eaten right off his body was hard to imagine.
