I’ve been in the show twice. And I’ll never forget the advice my Director gave to me whilst playing Tobias. We were having a deep discussion about how Tobias is mentally challenged, I’m on the Autistic spectrum so I used a lot of my own ticks and personality in the role. And he turned round and said to me, “Tobias is portrayed as clueless and slow. Yet out of everybody, he is the only one who figures out Todd is shady and making people disappear. He’s a heartbreaking tragic character who ends up going mad and essentially becomes the next Todd at the end. He figured it out despite being mentally challenged whilst others who were intelligent were oblivious to Todd’s misdeeds. So who is the real idiot?

My closing night of this show was yesterday. I played Tobias... And my biggest challenge was tapping into insanity in the ending scene. When I got it for the first time it was opening night. It's been my favorite show for all my life... And I think the audience fueled the moment as well as seeing the "dead body" of Mrs. Lovett. The actress who played her is incredible and our chemistry in stage is indescribable. I also didn't like the actor who played Todd that much so killing him was fun 🤗

I love that interpretation. “Being close and being clever ain’t like being true…” I loved that the 2005 revival was so Toby-centric, it practically works as a sequel.

I just have been on a sweeney binge this week and listened through the original, this version, the 2014 version and the recent 2023 and dang Michael and Imelda is my favourite pair. I loved Imelda’a interpretation of Mrs Lovett. Michael’s performance and the flawless singing is just magnificent. I really wish I got to watch this live!!!!

Have you heard the 1993 National Theatre production? It's still my favourite: Denis Quilley as Todd, but with Julia McKenzie as Mrs Lovett rather than the irritating Sheila Hancock. Sadly it's only on KZbin as an audio recording for BBC Radio 4 and was never officially recorded, but it is still there and we can be thankful for that...

So, someone tell me if I got this right: this revival is set in the 30s as the great depression mirrors the oppression of the working class in the Victorian age. The opening and closing ballad is set in a factory where the cleaners are trying to get enough money and as they're listening to the radio they tell each other the story of Sweeney Todd. Am I right?

@RickvanVeldhuizen

Yes, that's what they were trying to convey. It's very close to Harold Prince's original concept, which was also set in a factory, albeit one contemporaneous to Sweeney's story itself, in the industrial revolution.

At first It reminds me of the true crime talk you hear at work. “Well I heard this…”, “You know what they say..” “He just LOOKS guilty…” On the desk I picture a copy of the Daily Mail with a screamer headline “Pie Shop Horror!” But then a character 3:30 I assume to be Sweeney arrives, lowered in a sort of elevator. Now my interpretation is that this is Hell or Purgatory, and they’re gossiping about the latest arrival. That adds a layer to the epilogue, when they’re pointing into the audience going “He’s there! He’s there!”. Maybe this is the circle of the Wrath/the vengeful/the resentful and we’re right here with them.

@michaelwilliamybarra2409

Yes it is, though it's an optional key that was used by the original Broadway production too. The original key(as heard on the Broadway recording and movie soundtrack) is E flat major, and this key(also done in the televised production with George Hearn and Angela Lansbury) is in F major.

You know, Lighting diretors, Scenic Artists, Sound Board Ops, and Techies, all help produce the productions YOU may be in, Show some credit for such an ungrateful bunch of work. Ahh yes no matter how many times I tell the stage directors the fabricated Rocks and look-alikes and not meant for stepping on, I find them broken and asked "Is that what they're going to look like?" before release, Yet Somehow, Someway, I NEVER EVER hear that from patron goers who are all fooled. Give me a break, you work with what you got and you don't throw a fit, A theatre is for the live experience not recorded, Slimes may not be for YOU, but there for US, they're for ME
