What a treat! I saw the Groban revival last week and was just blown away! My theatre professor saw this production and to this day is his favorite! I prefer the full orchestra but this still sounds magnificent! Thank you again for posting, Aurora!

It's a production like no other it always reminds me of the 1999 Cabaret revival in how it refreshed the musical, shame that like that production of Cabaret this revival came from the West End as well.

Yo, to start the whole thing with Toby in an asylum after the whole ordeal - that was soooo dark, it gave me major goosebumps! What a brilliant and creative idea! 😳 Wish I could a full recording of this, especially since Patti LuPone is my favourite Mrs. Lovett anyway. 🥲

I saw the tour with Judy Kaye as Lovett, and Alex Gemignani as Sweeney. It was so interesting to see. The framing device, definatly added an extra layer of suspense...and damn, can Patti play a triangle or what?!

@@auroraspiderwoman5886 Apparently, the article has since been edited, but initially the NYT article said "The musical hasn't been seen or heard in New York for 43 years." They later said "A previous tweet misstated the history of Sweeney Todd productions in New York. This Broadway revival is the first time a fully staged production of the musical will run in New York in 43 years, not the first time the musical has been seen or heard in New York for 43 years." which... is still wrong.

This was the best. I saw it 5 times and everytime it got better. Patti deserved the Tony award that year she made the role her own

I made a bad choice - I have been intrigued by this production since I saw the Angela Landsbury stage recording as a child. I love Patti and I learned of Michael from Fringe... BUT... the movie and this production were out the same time and my husband didn't want to see both. I STUPIDLY chose the movie cause it was cheaper.... I MADE A BAD CHOICE.

@@warnerr1074 Basically there was this time where John Doyle would cast actors as musicians and it was viewed as revolutionary, but when you have a musically rich score like Sweeney, it ends up sounding like a way to skirt paying musicians. It works in shows like Cabaret where the musicians are supposed to be second rate, but when the music is integral to the show and you cast Patti LuPone, who has never touched a tuba in her goddamn life, it just ends up being gimmicky and eye-rolling. The current revival is lightyears ahead of this Dollar Tree production.
