Wow. Unless you're editing out a lot of failures... this may be one of the most impressive hi-fi repairs on YT, from anybody. Using your domain knowledge to put together that amplifier with a misleading schematic, cut harnesses, and an entire missing board... and making it sound good. Quite a thing, congrats.

Thank you for such an awesome investigative project and the explanations of what you were doing as the project progressed; a real education. Thought you were going to make reference to an artist "formerly known as" Q617 known as Q17 on the board, or reference to a Bond movie. Really enjoy these longer vids with less left on the cutting room floor.

Excellent work. As one of my old bosses would say, more money was spent on the "pretty" (power meters, protection circuit indicators and related circuity) and less on the "nitty gritty" (circuit boards, components). The history of Setton International is interesting. Jacky Setton, a British entrepreneur, made his fortune importing Pioneer and other Japanese electronics manufacturers products for the French and UK market, real estate, and selling racing cars. He's more well known for yachting and yacht building. It is said that the Setton line of audio gear was manufactured by Pioneer and was more expensive than similar Pioneer models. Setton International was only in business for four years, from 1977 to 1981.

What an amazing job building that board from schematics with missing information. I envy your ability to read a schematic so well and understand the functions of the various circuits depicted in it. I always learn a lot from your videos and this is one of the best. Thanks! Any recommendations for a good book on reading and understanding schematics beyond just identifying components, but understanding the circuits and how they work?

Tony you are the Master here on KZbin . Im hoping someday soon you will tackle the 1982 Realistic STA-2080 these receivers sound beautiful but for some reason they all run a little on the hot side with correct biasing I know you could find the original design mistake causing it to run hot . Also your past video on the STA-2200 was awesome. being Realistic it's about the best sounding receiver I've ever heard in that wattage range. Keep up the great work Tony --YOU ROCK!!!

I had static noise on both channels of my Setton AS1100. Not affected by volume. It was tricky to find the source of the noise. It turned out to be noisy transistors (with black tarnished legs) on the microphone EQ amp and this noise was leaking into to system even with mic gain at minimum. New transistors and a re-cap of the mic EQ board eliminated the noise.

Tony like I’ve said in the past and I’m sure most of your viewers would agree with me because most of us here like to learn is don’t worry about the people that don’t like the long videos. I personally love when you get into the schematics and explain how and why the circuits work. If I’m working in my garage and don’t have time to sit and watch I still play your videos to listen to them. I have replayed videos from when you fist started. Since I have a terrible memory at my older age it’s like I’m watching it for the first time lol. Those that don’t like the longer videos have a FF button. We don’t have a “fill in the missing schematic explanation” button. Thank you again! I still have a lot to learn.

i don't remember you saying what the short was that took out the resistors
@xraytonyb
@xraytonyb Жыл бұрын
I never really found the cause of the short. I suspect it had something to do with the indicator lights or the "missing" circuit board that controlled them. The security board operated on the 18.5 volt supply, but that would not explain why the resistor for the negative 18.5 supply was also opened. We may never know....

I sold Setton @ Franklin Music in Atlanta. This would have been in the late 70s - 1980. They all had a very polished look. I think Pierre Cardin was the designer of "the Look". The owner of the company, was the lead importer for Pioneer at the time, and wanted his own brand in the marketplace. As a matter of fact, some of Pioneer's electronic designers, actually designed some of the actual electronics. A pretty amazing story. On eBay, the people auctioning off Setton gear, tend to believe they are worth more than they actually are. There are not a lot of units out there, so parts are somewhat hard to come by. I would like to have a Setton piece in my collection, but I am not willing to spend, what some selers are asking. Kind of like the Marantz Tax. Enjoyed the episode.

Hi Tony, thanks for all your videos. They are invaluable to hobbyist repairers like me. It seems that everything I repair, you have a viodeo on it!. This video was certainly a KZbin classic. Great job. So much to learn from sharing your huge expeience. I am currently restoring one of these amps, but I have a problem. This service manual description of adjusting the bias current seems to suggest that the left channel is set at 30 mA and the right at 70 mA Surely this can't be correct. Is this a misprint? Did you notice this? You didn't mentioin bias adjustment in your video. Did you work out what the bias currenyt should be for left and right channels?
@xraytonyb
@xraytonyb 5 ай бұрын
Most likely a misprint. Set them both to 30mA and check for distortion. If it performs well, you should be good!
@cskeet1320
@cskeet1320 5 ай бұрын
Hi Tony, Thanks very much for your reply. Very helpful .I actually found a French forum post (had to translate) which confirms what you suggest. This amp really sounds great. Just to add to the intrigue of the amp... The security PCB is present in my unit. It is the same as the PCB in the service manual and as you suspected the right hand section is not populated. The protection and heat bulbs were blown. (Operate bulb works). I replaced them and they just blew again. On checking the board one of the tracks to get he unpopulated section has been cut and a wire link has been added from the base of Q5 to pin 11. This doesn't seem to make any sense. Also the PCB silk screen printing of Q7 does not correspond to the orientation of Q7 and the PCB tracks/ connections have differences to the schematic that don't make sense! Very confusing. I'm not sure if it came out of the factory like this and has never functioned properly or if someone has messed with it. Anyway, I think I just need reverse engineer the security board from the schematic and build a new PCB like you did. Frustrating as I actually have the original PCB. Do you still have a copy of the schematic that you designed?

I'm not an electrical engineer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night! LOL 😂 Seriously though, NICE job on the re-manufacture/re-engineering of the missing board, I wish I knew just a fraction of what you do Tony! I can usually follow along and understand it as you're talking us through what's going on, but being able to take a schematic and understand what the original design was supposed to do, I'd be lost, maybe someday I will. 😉 Great video! 👏

Yes, dastardly deeds indeed on this one and the evidence do suggest Sweeny Todd cuts! What a handsome fellow at first glance and not know a Setton A1100 amplifier has a slight look of a cool smooth 1970s Rotel. It seems obvious that in this case, Sweeny Todd had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. What a great video listening to the outro music had a kind of tube sound. I listen to KZbin with Hi-Fi speakers that also serve as bench speakers.

I did my apprenticeship In the late seventies early eighties, so I have a soft spot for this type of equipment. I still think the quality of build is better then todays. These were the days when you could call up the manufactures and get straight through to a engineer and speak engineer to engineer (or Technician to Technician depending how you labelled yourself we were always known as service engineers and I still do) Ps great content nice to see how repairs should be done, anybody can change a chip it's knowing why that chip is a fault and being able to do the measurements to prove that chip is as fault.

I agree your guess that maybe the seller tried to parts it out is correct the reason you got it as a "whole amp" is he had no takers and did not want to wait around. That or it was recovered by a scraper who then tried to sell it whole as is instead of scraping it out. I got a bunch of "crap" like that all without any service documents existent.

Incredible work as always. I would have said "nah, pass..." if I were the one to see the insides. You are a better man than I am. One quick question, you kept calling it a "receiver", is it just a slip of the tongue, or is there a reason for it? And note on the Sponge Bob fans, if their attention span is limited to 11 minutes, they shouldn't follow channels that do their repair/restoration works in real time while providing a ton of useful info. There are quite a few channels that show similar contents with sped up or time lapsed videos accompanied by entertaining music.
