I've never been able to sweep pick, bar the odd three string arpeggio all in the same direction in a swift rake motion, but Rick highlighting how you pick then rest on the next target string has blown my mind. Never thought of it, never tried it, but can't wait to try it out!! 20+ years of playing and only now I discover the secret. Thanks Rick, keep up the quality content 👌

Sweep picking exercise suggestion: start with the CAGED system, and learn to shred every scale included in the CAGED system by increasing the BPM from low to high. I think Petrucci once suggesting this as a form of warmup technique, but I find it to be very useful for practicing the technique also.

This is great! The sweeping shape I've always struggled with the most is the major shape with the root on the 5th string (i.e. the A major "CAGED" shape) because of the 3-string bar. Curious as to how you (or anyone else reading this) approach that one... with the 3-string bar or maybe fretting the strings with a few different fingers?
@lollipophugo4 жыл бұрын
A is actually my easiest shape because it requires the least finger movement lol. I use my second finger across all 3 but sort of bent backwards at the outermost knuckle and roll it across the strings; this rolling coupled with right hand muting sounds totally clean, no ringing strings or anything. I do the same rolling motion with the 3rd finger for an A minor shape and with the first and 3rd for E major and minor shapes, imo rolling the first finger makes these shapes harder.
@TrevorTowstego4 жыл бұрын
@elchema Which fingers do you use for the notes on strings 2, 3, and 4? I've thought about doing something like that but I find that the spacing can get pretty cramped higher up on the neck
@TrevorTowstego4 жыл бұрын
@@lollipophugo For me the toughest part is descending with the 3-string bar. I don't mind the 2-string bars in other shapes, and even the 3-string bar in the E minor shape isn't too bad, but it's just this 3-string one in particular that's tough for me to get to sound clean. Might spend some time practicing the bar with my middle finger instead. Thanks for the reply!
@lollipophugo4 жыл бұрын
@@TrevorTowstego man I find that first finger roll on E minor so messy that I almost never use that shape. Tbh I don't do use many 5 string shapes and if I'm doing any sweep picking it's usually 5 note 7th patterns over 3 strings a la rusty cooley; with those I'm only ever rolling between 2 strings which is much more manageable regarding muting.
@TrevorTowstego4 жыл бұрын
@@lollipophugo I find that my most consistent sweeps are with the C major and minor shapes... probably because there's no rolling to worry about lol.

Thanks for the video Rick, just a question for all out there, when going back to the low E, and keeping in mind you want to continue the sweep down, how do you find is more fluid, downstroke or upstroke pick? I find sometimes that if I finish the move with an upstroke, I repeat the same string again, most of the time, so low E twice. Most of the time unintended. Any suggestion?

I am clearly not good enough for this lesson, even slowing the video down i couldn't figure out what you were playing. The first and second arpeggios were well explained and I got the sweep picking action down pretty quickly but just trying to scrawl some kind of tab out so I can take time to practice the full progression was extremely frustrating. If a tab for this lesson is available please let me know it would save me many hours of screaming at my strings. Thanks
