Sweet playing a Free song with Ritchie Blackmore is something I never thought I'll ever hear.

Brian Connolly explained Ritchie Blackmore`s appearance and the performance of Free`s `All Right Now`, `That was down to the guy who died,former Free guitarist Paul Kossoff. He died on the plane,on the 19th of March (1976) from a cerebral and pulmonary edema,he and his new band Back Street Crawler were supposed to be supporting SWEET. It just so happened that Ritchie Blackmore came to see us,and he came backstage. I can`t remember who actually said it,but somebody said, `Are you going to have a blow?` and Ritchie said, `Yes,come back for an encore,i`ve got my guitar in the car.` Just like that. We said, `Okay,we`ll do `All Right Now`. We just said we`d do it as a tribute,that`s how it came about. We`ve been friends with Ritchie for a long time.` Andy Scott recalled the appearance of the `Man in Black`, `It was completely spontaneous. We met Ritchie the night before,and the one thing he said to our tour manager,who used to work for Deep Purple,a guy called Mick Angus,was `You`d better let me go into the gig tonight.` Because the last time we`d played Los Angeles,six months earlier in September 1975,he hadn`t been able to get into the show. This was because our management at thàt time,and record company,had virtually sold out the gig even before tickets went on sale. There were only a certain amount of tickets down in the auditorium that were available,because the record company had basically bought all the tickets. That`s how `in demand` that 1975 concert was.... We should have done more nights there at Santa Monic Civic that first time,but that`s the way they,the record company, wanted to play it. So the second time we did it,the tickets were sold out. And one of the things Ritchie said to tour manager Mick Angus was, `I`m gonna come,and i`m gonna come in this time!` And we said, `Of course you are!!` Andy opined, `You can definitely tell which is Ritchie`s sound because he is the cleaner guitar sound and i am the more driven Marshall sound,because there was an offer to set up another Marshall stack. But Ritchie just said, `Plug me into anything,i`ll be allright.` And the only amps on my side of the stage that were available for Ritchie to plug into were the amps that were monitoring the synthesizers,which had a couple of horns in them,which left him with a rather loud and clean sound.` This show,on the 24th of March 1976,was the final show of the tour,performed at the Santa Monic Civic Centre in L.A. Support act was Sammy Hagar;the `Red Rocker`. SWEET`s set included: `The Ballroom Blitz`--`The Six Teens`--`Restless`--`No You Don`t`--`AC/DC`--`Burn On The Flame`--`The Man with the Golden Arm`--`Action`--`Set Me Free`--`Fox on the Run`--`Sweet F.A. 🤩

My Dad a huge music fan and guitar player saw him at I think Lime Street station in Liverpool or was it in London? Anyway he was strung out looking terrible and it appeared his old dad or Uncle or someone was trying to persuade him to go with them and a bit of a ruckus erupted so sad. What a guitarist.

@@anthonypioppi273 Not sure, it was the only time we ever saw a show in Higanum and that was almost 50 years ago. We usually were seeing bands in. Waterbury, Hartford or New Haven, it was an odd place to go. It was a great show on any event, sad in retrospect.

Interesting.....Rock Ratings (book) has them rated very high in the (original bands) category. However, in the (lead guitarist) category, Blackmore is pretty overrated. In fact, in the "overrated category" blackmore is !0th on the list. That's better than the first and second spot on the list occupied by Cobain at #1 just above George Lynch.
@Maccaxxx5 күн бұрын
They couldn't write a song for toffee that's why they are not rated, they relied on Chinn & Chapman for their hits, i liked their sound though on their hits, they weren't in the same street as Slade live either.

I knew this existed but never thought I'd hear it. I remember the music press at the time whipped up a supposed dislike of Sweet by Ritchie Blackmore (maybe because of one of Ritchie's jokes?) but he always said that they were a great band. The musicians know, the press are just shit.

I was between 9 and 12 when they had their greatest hits in Germany. Even the way they performed the Chin-Chapman bubble gum rock was impressive. I later became a punk and lots of punk bands where influenced by them and some covered their songs. I didn’t have a clue what teenage rampage means - english lessons started when I was 11 - but I got it anyway. Incredible how the record companies betrayed them. A poster of Brian Connelly hung on the wall in 100.000’s German teenager's rooms back then. And he died early with nothing.
@richvince1627Күн бұрын
For those that were 'there', you know that Sammy Hagar opened the show. To start his set he sat down on the front of the stage and played the intro to "Bad Motor Scooter" on a slide guitar. It was one of his first solo shows after leaving Montrose. After his set he sat down next to us in the 20th Row...and the first thing I said to my buddy was "Thank God he's not sitting in front of us cuz with all that hair we wouldn't be able to see the stage!"

Sweet were an early favourite band for me, undoubtedly influenced by the run of rock singles starting with Blockbuster. I moved on to Mott The Hoople but not before their UK release of "Sweet Fanny Adams" became one of my favourite albums - still to this day. That said, I was never a real fan of their live recordings. This one, notable for historic reasons, I find entertaining but it doesn't really change my opinion of their non-studio work. Still, it wouldn't do for everyone to have the same tastes. And it has prompted me to play SFA tomorrow.
