Recreating a classic track on modular using the Deluge as a CV and gate sequencer! Tracks were into a Tascam Portastudio then mixed down using some compression and light processing only (Silver Bullet, Manley Vari-Mu, Handsome Audio Zulu, and RND 542). Please subscribe if you enjoy!
To learn the basics of modular, I made this beginner's tutorial:

Heheh, thanks-you guys are awesome. Have to say I’m a huge fan of Annie Lennox’s singing though.

Hi folks! I often use modular just for experimental music, but I thought it would be fun to try to recreate one of the all-time great songs on a modular synth alongside a Deluge and a Keystep. It took a while, but it was fun and ended up sounding pretty rad. First I studied the song a bit and programmed most of the parts into the Deluge. I then used its CV and gate outs to sequence the modular for percussion and synths, creating the various parts and recording them into the Tascam Portastudio until I built up the whole track. Some parts, such as the lead, I decided to play directly using the Keystep instead of sequencing them for a more "live" feel. I did a good deal of real-time tweaking to the modular so that the sounds kept changing, alongside of course modulating things with LFO's.

What I really like is that you don't aim for the exact sound of the original but give your version a special, darker, edge. Awesome!

Holy cow this sounds amazing! On a side note, those panels with wires sprawling everywhere and lights flashing is one of the most satisfying things I've ever seen.

What was the sequenzer in your Setup and how did you enter/stored the patterns and scene changes
@ModularLanding
@ModularLanding 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Netz, danke für die Frage -- the sequencer was the Deluge. That controls the modular via CV and gate outputs and has all the patterns in it. It works wonderfully as a modular sequencer, because it can create tracks of infinite length and its super easy to program.

Stunning‼️💢 How much practice did it take you to get it this good?

Thank you! Maybe it looks harder than it is. I think someone could learn to do stuff like this in a few months to a year. I started music a long time ago but had only been doing modular for 3-4 years before doing this track, I think.

Excellent! My only criticism: the monitors shots are useless unless you can clearly see the subs kicking hard. Again, Excellent!

Haha! That was in fact the idea... but at that moment of filming I didn’t have it turned up loud enough and no pumping was happening! Oh well... I’ll get it right next time

This is really cool, did you actually do the panning like on the original? I can’t really tell
@ModularLanding
@ModularLanding 5 жыл бұрын
Great question. I started off doing the hard panning, but it sounded a bit weird. I think because the modular sound is a lot stronger and more raw than the original synth that the Eurhythmics used. Also both of the two rhythmic synth parts were recorded in stereo. So I ended up soft-panning it. The more bass synth (the one an octave lower) is slightly panned to one side and the one that's an octave higher is soft-panned to the other side. It's subtle. The panning on the original is one of the coolest things to my mind about that synth riff and one of the things that makes it sound so amazing. I wanted to retain it but it sounded odd when I did, so I went with a subtler panning that I hope still maintains that sense of off-kilter-ness but also sounds cool.

That's a Synthstrom Deluge and it's amazing! It is both a synth and a sequencer, and it can sequence external MIDI and CV (for modular).
