Sazerac Rye often gets touted as a sweet and easy introduction to rye for bourbon drinkers, but it can be difficult to find in many markets and often gets marked up to $60-70+. We wanted to see if Michter's US*1 Rye could serve as an alternative--or even best Sazerac--in a double blind tasting.

The Michter's Rye is the best rye I've had. It's got notes of maple sugar candy, cough syrup, vanilla, and oak char. The low proof and sweetness make it way more crushable than something higher proof like the OF 100 rye. Not sure how much it differs bottle to bottle considering it's single barrel.

I love the brutal honesty of blind tastings. Both of you were thinking bourbon, but they were ryes. (Shakespeare, not) In blinds, with my homies, I always get my pride handed to me. That’s why we love you guys -- you take your lumps and move on. My beloved Wilderness Trail 6-Year Rye had an awful medicinal first sip waiting for me tonight. It was my palate’s fault, coming off a dinner of meatloaf surprise, but in a blind I would have treated it like a red-headed stepchild. All folkloric romance aside, truth is, whiskey is much more like your weird uncle than your lover. That goes double for your palate. Josh said “fried dough.”

I really enjoy rye and thought I was the only one who didn't love Sazerac. It was a one-and-done for me.

Ive had three bottles... Its ok... Rittenhouse i gravitate towards same price point. Michters SB worth every penny

Pew pew! Baby Saz is... fine. I use it for Sazerac Cocktails (natch!) since it doesn't have enough rye spice for me. I know that Buffalo Trace fever has hit it as well, which baffles me, but whatever--I can find it all day every day around me for MSRP if I did want it. Michter's was an early bottle for me on my whiskey journey, and one that I recommend to others who want to ease their way into ryes without getting bowled over with rye spice.

Funny. I happened to be sipping a sample pour of Sazarac rye just before watching this (totally unplanned) and I had the exact same experience. It’s allocated by me, so I now know not to pine for it. It’s good, but just felt “young”.

Sazerac rye is strange. The bourbon junkies said it has a distinct salted watermelon note and i agree. The difference is they like it and i dont.

I was just debating between these two choices last week. Sounds like i made the right choice to opt for the Michters. Interestingly, in our market (I'm also in Nashville), sazerac and BT are back to being easy to find, off the shelf products. I haven't seen a store without them in the last 2-3 months. Similarly, once highly hyped store picks have also been hanging around longer than usual. Personally, I think this is great, even if it's due to universal price increases across all products. Could also be due to the explosion in new products hitting our market every week. So...what do you guys think are the next 'hard to find' bottles that will be making a return to the shelves in the next few months?

Great question! Hard to say for sure. We’d love to return to a world where Eagle Rare, EH Taylor, and Weller are on the shelf all the time as well so folks can try it themselves and get past the hype.

Yo! I am not a huge Sazerac rye fan, haven’t had the Michters rye, but sounds pretty good. Unfortunately I’m a fan of their higher end ryes. Haha!! Too bad I can’t find them! Cheers!

Just popped a michters first time. Regular single barrell. Fellow patron in the store tonight said he loves it. As he was picking up a WT 101 rye. I said put that down. Get rittenhouse. He then said get a michters. We both left happy. He took a rittenhouse again as he just said he finished one. I'm so glad i got the michters. He's probably sad he got the rittenhouse. I'm side by siding them now. It crushes it in all the ways. I've been sipping the ritten for a week now and loved it. Never again. I will get it because of price. But it'll be tough to not get this. Especially knowing it beats another one in a blind.

This Michter’s rye and a bottle of Bulleit 95 rye are two great places to start. Michter’s can show you how sweet some rye can be while Bulleit will showcase how herbal some rye can be.

I've never been impressed by baby Saz. I've bought several bottles over the years because so many people sing it's praise it's just not my juice. I quite like Michter's rye but I don't drink it as much as I used to. I think it's at a weird proof point, would be even better if it were a little higher.
