Thinking of the late Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon today. Listening to the choral group she founded helps, with mourning and with thankfulness for her accomplishments and legacy.

I’ve loved this extraordinarily powerful version of what was originally (in my view) quite a bland hymn from Cymru/Wales. Tue cultural infusion of African-America is quite stellar!

Bernice died 2 days ago. Few people can speak their own times. This woman spoke CENTURIES. Respect and awe.

Yes, she did. I am finding that listening to her recordings, under her own name and in this incredible group, is helping with sorrow, though this hymn has me tearing up. It's the most beautiful version I've ever heard.

Brother!! Ever since Obama won I been feelin' some kind of way...I used to listen to SHIR for hours! My soul needed s'thing today so I looked them up! God bless you for posting. Last night I cried buckets of tears for my Dad who died tragically. Still miss him so. In light of what has happened in the US recently, I miss him more. Another noble Black man who loved his daughters much. I needed to hear this today - can't explain it. To salt and heal my soul. Thank and bless you...so much.

I agree, its like the calling from back in the day, back during Jim Crow, slavery, the middle passage, and even future, letting us know that everything is going to be alright, cause God's got it all under control! Glad you got a blessing!

Thank you for posting this, thank you God for their Gift, hearing them sing takes me back to the baptist church I grew up in, sounds so good, so rich, sad that we are loosing our connection to this art form of singing Dr. Watts hymns! My soul is full right now, somebody hold my mule.

Enjoyed all the comments, but this genre is Negro Spiritual. I think those Spirituals are some of the most heaven stirring sounds in this world.

Guide me oh thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land, I am weak but thou art strong, am weak, but Thou art mighty; Hold me with Thy powerful hand. Bread of Heaven, Bread of Heaven, Feed me till I want no more, Bread of Heaven, Bread of Heaven, Feed me till I want no more.

Thanks for posting this. It's a treasure. But it's not a recent song made in the last few years. It's very old. I'm middle aged now, but I grew up in the deep South. My parents, grandparents, etc have always sung this song in a highly similar if not identical fashion. Although not a spiritual, both the melody and style of delivery have been passed down through generations reaching back to the very headwaters of African American communities.

These women are anointed
@netizencapet4 ай бұрын
Not religious but some performances/compositions are so powerful that they simply prove whatever is meant by "spiritual," so yes, I agree that the song is anointed. That the genre of song happens to be called that is an odd concurrence.

Let me clear that up a little; Guide Me Oh... is a hymn sung in Spiritual form/tunes. In the old days, especially in the rural South, smaller Black "Baptist" churches sung most of their hymns in this manner.

Singing doesn't get much better than SHITR. Bluesy, gospel soul stirring. The epitome of Soul Music. The voices of Mother God, IMHO.
