Thanks for sharing. A few hopefully helpful notes below... Dehydrating with any fats or oils makes it take a little longer, but it also means the finished product can go "rancid" while in storage. There really is no need for the oil in this type of product. Dogs don't need it, dehydrating process is slowed by it so it does not need it. Also, sweet potatoes are okay to feed to dogs, but they contain starch and too much starch may give your dog stomach issues. It's different for each dog though. If giving them starch for the first time, give it to them a little at a time, to see how much they can handle. My little 25 pound dog can eat 10 or more baby carrots a day w/o issues but other dogs I know have trouble after just a few. Lastly, using any oven on the low setting works just as well as a dehydrator for this type of treat.

Just a suggestion, to make your cutting up of the sweet potato safer, after the first small cut like you did, rotate it so the cut surface is down. That way it's more stable.

Erik, just tried this over here with some slight modifications because I don't have all the gadgets etc which I'd like to share :) Used a mandolin to cut the sweet potato into discs (sort of 90 degrees to yours). Then put them in a bowl and used a little bit of sunflower oil and tossed them in it (not much just a very light coating (don't have the spray)). Then put them on a big baking tray lined with a silicon mat. Put them in a fan oven at about 80 degrees C (about 180 degrees F) with the door slightly open (using a wooden spoon) for 4-5 hours. Then let them cool in the oven. My dog loved them as did every other dog that had one - and they store well if laid on kitchen paper in an airtight box. Now have a dehydrator on the way as that works out cheaper than our oven. Thanks for the idea!

I make these for all of my friends for their dogs, they love them. Also those egg whites you had left over from your ginger ice cream video you can scramble them and put in your pups dry dog food. If you allow them to have things like that. We had a dog that lived forever when I was a kid, my mom scrambled that dog an egg every Sunday morning. Lol....Nice video, thanks for posting.

Great advice! Doggie treats are super expensive, and often times just loaded with preservatives and yucky ingredients, so I LOVE this idea! I don't have a dehydrator but I'm gonna try it in my toaster oven at a low temp - I'm sure my dog won't notice the difference! Thanks you guys!

I am new at making treats for my fur-babies. I found a dehydrator yesterday at a thrift store for $7.00. I use to make beef jerky for my kids years ago. Great idea. We make treats for our lab mix and bichon (sp) with organic peanut butter, whole what flour and warm water. Ollie, our lab mix, is like a vulture through the whole process. They love them. We have some dog bone shaped cookie cutters we use and if I want to get their attention all I have to do is say "treat?". We'll try the sweet potato also. I'm sure they'll love them. Took a look at your new site for the dogs. Love it.

If you do these in theviven, be sure to use parchment paper to line the cookie sheet, otherwise the chips will stick really bad and you'll end up with a pile of slivers! Sldo, I sliced the sweet potatoes with a manfoline and they were probably yoo thin. They were really crispy like potato chips and both my dog and I rnjoyed them, buy cutting them thicker with a knife like the video will make them chewier like the packaged ones (only a lot healthier!) Great video, thanks!

@gardenfork
@gardenfork 11 жыл бұрын
Hi Kiomi, I believe this will work with a convection oven, or if you have an oven that has a real low temperature setting, like 200F. i don't know how long it will take, i would start in the early morning so you can watch it through the day. the potato slices should be on a wire rack of some sort, not on a cookie sheet, air needs to circulate around the slices. or maybe a neighbor has a dehydrator? thanks! eric.

um, i was just wondering how much of the treats a dog can have a day before it makes them sick b/c these are sweet and have sugar in them, right? and sugar's bad for dogs, right?
@gardenfork
@gardenfork 11 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle, good question here. Sweet Potatoes have some naturally occurring sugar in them, about 4 grams per 100 gram potato, so the name "Sweet" does not mean it has refined sugar added. They are super healthy, having beta carotene. more info here on wikipedia : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweet_potato#Nutrient_content
@toBe8ere
@toBe8ere 11 жыл бұрын
Oh I know there's no additional sugar in these, what I meant was whether the existing sugar in them would take more or about the same amount as any other store bought sweet potato treats w/ refined sugar to make a dog sick?

Here's a good recipe for sweet potato biscuits (originally for humans): 3 C flour 3 tsp Baking powder 1 1/2 tsp salt 3 tbs brown sugar 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/8 tsp allspice 1/3+ C butter 1 C sweet potato (cooked, skinned, about one medium size) 6 tbs buttermilk a few tbs melted butter to brush biscuits before baking 1) Cut butter into dry ingredients as you would w/ scones. 2) Add sweet potato and buttermilk, then mix w/ stiff spatula until roller-ready. 3) Let dough rest 20 minutes before rolling. 4) Cut square or round shapes, place on parchment paper, brush w/ melted butter. 5) Bake at 350 until dun. We used to eat 'em, but once Dixie got one that all changed. ;-)

Saw this on KZbin don't know who posted but these are the ingredients, boneless skinless chicken, pinch of garlic powder, and sweet potatoes. Boil chicken and potatoes, put in food processor add garlic powder than spread thinly on fruit roll up sheets, put in dehydrator until dry, if you wish cut in pieces before drying or break into pieces after dry. Don't have a dog, but when friends come over their dogs run in the house and I mean run for their treat! Now I can't get rid of the store bought treats I have....not good enough for them!
