I'm 60 and I swear the 70's produced the best band music ever! I didn't know that at the time of course thinking it would just keep getting better and better. I'd say around the mid-80's the "decline" was in full swing. The Sweet went from Archie type music to Glam Rock and were a fav of mine as a teen. Only 1 band member still alive - wow.
@JoinTheProgress
@JoinTheProgress Жыл бұрын
1990 and on was the decline, there've actually been videos about how measurable it was. In 1989 my friends and I were very excited about the 90's thinking it was going to be a technological miracle, with astounding production quality and sounds, coupled with sheer talents that the world could hardly imagine; instead the exact opposite happened...rap and grunge were forced through as the industry standards due to how cheap they were both to produce and how the talents weren't nearly as expensive (because they had so much less talent). Vocal skill sets, instrumental skills, compositional skills...ALL went right down the toilet for cheaper-everything. They sold it to the kids, the kids bought it, and music history was permanently altered. There have been *some* hints of change more recently, but they're still not "the standard" that there once was in the commercial arena. They're still all on the side while commercial music is all computer generated and computer honed (such as for vocals, no one even needs to really be able to sing any more, with very few exceptions). And lyrics are all garbage now compared to the poetry of our time. Polyphia is an exception to the return of the skill sets. And very little positive, upbeat and fun stuff like Sweet (who are also all talented musicians) exists any longer. To end on a positive, kids ARE discovering the old music. I know a 19 year old who listens to a lot of 60's and 70's music. He was also home-schooled which I find interesting.

Wow how good did Steve Priest look in guyliner I was only 5 in 72 so my teenage years were spent listening to the New Romantic groups, I wish the Sweet had been around a decade later, no doubt I would of had a poster of them on my bedroom wall and Steve would of been my favourite! Rest in Peace.

What wonderful times were the 70s and 80s, when i look back i feel a deep sadness of what life is like today. I dont just mean covid-19 but also how humanity has become, we're alot more serious nowaday's "cant do this because of this", cant do the other because of that". I have never felt so restricted and never known such dark sad times, never been as much depression as there is now, i for one truly hope covid makes us all less demaning and selfish and really start enjoying life again.

There were horribly managed. While they enjoyed early success with Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman writing their songs, Sweet had no control over their music. The were forced into bubble gum glam because they were young and good looking. As you correctly pointed out, they were very musically talented, and wanted the artistic freedom to produce more than bubble gum. By the time they were able to take more control over their careers, Brian Connolly's issues hurt the band. In 1974, they were to tour with the Who, but Connolly had an injured throat from a bar fight and couldn't sing. Connolly's alcoholism led to health issues and other problems, as Sweet continued to self destruct while trying to find their way. By 1979, Connolly was no longer with the bad. Weird thing is, if Connolly had cleaned up his act, and the band was able to hold together, they could have made it big again in the 1980's. There were perfect for the glam/hair metal of the 1980's.
