we don't worry much about aluminum as it can be sanded down and rebuffed over and over, not as much though when we use the special protectant, now you cant do that with chrome, once it is pitted and corroded re-chrome is the only option other than buying new...but we still clear or paint the aluminum rims on the backside only and we do use self-etching where needed.

WOW! Thank you SWEET Sweet Sweet Project Cars! **I put a £10 donation onto PayPal as a thank you**. Genius techniques and this will save me a small fortune! So glad I found this BRILLIANT set of Sweet Project demos on complete conditioning and prevention option for our expensive wheels. This is so well presented, for the beginner like me, you really learn. I'm in the UK where we get horrible salt and suddenly, in the space of less than 6 months, I discovered nasty corrosion under some chipped lacquer (clear coat). This is my next project. Surprising how horribly quickly this bad corrosion happens. YOU OTHER GUYS AND GALS HAVE BEEN WARNED.. We paid a lot of money for our wheels. Let's keep them good. In my case not so much second-hand, but my VW top spec standard rims new would have been something around £1500 a set. One winter of neglect can ruin a wheel, but Sweet P's tells us the genius way to protect. Better than the manufacturer did with one thin coat of clear. -After all, they just love selling wheels. I shall let you see the result when I am finished, I hope.

Hi. I want to start off by saying I your videos! I can appreciate all the hard work that you do and the time it takes to produce a video . I would like to comment on this particular video concerning the clear coat application on the Chrome plated Rim for Corrosion / rust Prevention. I have done this idea several years ago as a a test along with other ideas i had. They all were done at my shop , as it was my goal to prevent corrosion and rusting of rims regardless of what they were coated with . A few problems that I have faced is the clear coat will not stay on that Rim unless you scuff that surface and even if scuffed or sanded it still peeled off , but took a little longer. As you know the rim faces a lot of brutal challenges along with constant rocks and debris hitting it. And visiting the local detailer whos using whatever wheel acid that's on sale that month just worsens the situation . I have had these ideas fail and it was very disconcerting because of the time that it took it to do it . Also it seems to me the corrosion, rust, and bubbling of the Chrome starts & continues from underneath from the slightest bit of moisture entering through a seam or a hairline crack in the coating? There's nothing that I could find that would prevent it. Water would find the weakest point and eventually creep in , and it will not take years for this to happen either . I'm sorry to admit all of my testing failed and seemed doomed to happen just from a little bit of moisture getting underneath . It will start and it will grow like cancer . I'm not bashing you by any means, I think you do a great job with your videos and your knowledge however I do want to share this tidbit with you. I think this particular idea will not work for the long run or more than 2 years. Thank you for all your great videos

joe thank you for the comment...all our rims are sanded and we have never had a customer come back in 20 years where their wheels were peeling from our work, as we use the highest quality 2k clears and we have done 100's of wheels with no issues, one secret is to keep them clean in the winter when they are salting the roads. other than we have never had issues with what you are mentioning.

WOW! So many great tips here, Sweet! I have a couple of additional comments and a question. 1) A buddy of mine who happens to be a top Jaguar (mostly E-Types) mechanic told me that UV is VERY bad for chrome- your technique protects against that very well! 2) I have been changing out my chromed Acorn lugnuts every few years or so (due to rust and peeling of the chrome), I never thought of "clearing" them. Thanks. 3) I recommend putting some oil based lubricant (or maybe anti-seize) on the chamfer of the lugnuts- as you say, oil is the enemy of corrosion. My question: You cleaned off the glue from a previous wheel weight, but I noticed you did not disturb the existing wheel weight on the rim used in this video. Do you think it would be worth removing said weight to treat the rims and re-balance? As one changes tires over time, the weights will end up in a different place on the rim, requiring more efforts to prevent corrosion.

The only product I use with success as far as making the wheels look rich "black" is a product I've been getting from a friend. I'm wondering if I clear coat the satin will it maintain the look like when the wheels were new? I've only used them a few months and unless I use this product my wheels look dull on the barrels. I didn't do much to maintain my chrome S95 Cobra wheels and didn't think anything of it until earlier this year when I took the car out and heard this horrible clanking sound. I thought there was some brake problem or something else more serious before finding the chrome had peeled up and started to make contact with the brake caliper. While that chrome might be thinner than what's on the outer surface, it is thick enough to make a heck of a racket when it gets like that. It looks like eventually I'll have to have the wheels refinished. I don't think there is any saving it as they are now. Bummer...

Hi Guys Just wondering about the mother’s power ball attachment, I’ve seen them lots before but I had heard that they’ll only last about once for a full set of unloved/rough alloy mags! Just wondering how true this is?? And is there a way of using them many times over??. Cheers and thanks again guys from your fans down under!!
@SweetProjectCars7 жыл бұрын
Squizzy we have had no issues with them lasting..you want to make sure the wheel is sanded or somewhat smooth prior to using as rough wheels will tear up most anything thanks so much for your great comment and support of the SPC channel :)

How is clear coat able to adhere to such a surface? Is it different from non clear paint in that it doesn’t have to have a sanded surface to stick to?
@SweetProjectCars Жыл бұрын
When you follow the process the clear adheres like crazy glue my friend. Thanks for watching, have a great day. mad Mike

Hello. Great videos as always. Can you tell me what I might be doing wrong with polishing my alloy wheels? I just tryed mothers which I see you use a ton so maybe you can help. It says it should turn black and you rub off. I tryed to rub in with micro fiber towel and wipe off with micro fiber towel but it just rubbed off. Any guesses? Thx
@SweetProjectCars6 жыл бұрын
a plus your wheels did not turn black because they are clear coated...you will need to strip that off per this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZybhpV9n9SrlZI

Another thing you can do is take new rims to a ceramic applicator and have then do a ceramic clear. Its UV resistant and salt resistant. Its not a diy project but if you have a large investment into rims its always a good idea.
@SweetProjectCars6 жыл бұрын
yes you can do this but we try to keep it simple for the home DIYer, we feel what we show anyone can do on a weekend and it works...it is far better than doing nothing at all, and it did not break their bank...thanks for sharing :)

Wondering if one of the spray on rinse off silica sealant products might work fairly well and be easier then all this at least if you do it before your wheels get too dirty/worn down. I jst got some clear coated wheels I was thinking of trying the ceramic stuff on.

TheTruth4313 you can do this as well kzbin.info/www/bejne/nanSppyEjZ19g5I watch our process to ceramic coating wheels. thanks The Hammer

Hello Mike! Thank you again for another great vid! 👍🏼👍🏼 Question, I live in NC and we don’t have much problem with corrosion here, do I really need the clear coating on my wheels? Will the clear help to keep them cleaner longer? I’m watching ALL your Cleaning Wheels videos because I’m about to polish my aluminum wheels. I’ll be using all your techniques and products. 😎 Sweeet!!

I have a question sir. On the mother's mag and aluminium polish it says not use on chrome. You use it on chrome. Have you ever seen any negative reactions on the chrome from it?

I have a 2006 Honda Goldwing. The wheels are notoriously difficult to clean (and keep clean). Will this method work on them, too? (Probably a better question for the Sweet Scoots channel?)

Anyway to treat salt pitting on chrome wheels?
@SweetProjectCars3 жыл бұрын
Hello Israel, the only way you are going to do that is to have them re-chromed but it's always best to compare pricing on that vs. buying new chrome rims. Thanks for watching and asking. Have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC

Awesome video! Question though: How about when it comes time to have your wheel balanced at the shop and they have to scrape the old wheel weights off the inside? Wouldn't this damage the clear coat?
@SweetProjectCars6 жыл бұрын
tee roy when they move the weights to another place on the rim when blanaced you will just re-clear the area where the weight previously was located thank you very much for your great comment and we are glad we can help :)

Would the ceramic coating work as well or better?
@SweetProjectCars6 жыл бұрын
In my opinion the ceramic coating that we use would almost out last standard clearcoat by three or four years so yes I believe it Would Out perform any clearcoat out there

I have what might sound like a stupid question, I just purchased a car that was the victim of very sad and lazy owners. It has 20” chrome wheels and the chrome has bubbles under it in 2 of the wheels but hasn’t broken out.Is there any way to repair it without having to have them stripped and redone with new chrome?
@bobbymartin72666 жыл бұрын
Oh yea, I hate chrome wheels!!!!
@SweetProjectCars6 жыл бұрын
Bobby, there is no real way to fix the chrome by hand they will need to be re-chromed or buy new and then treat them per the video so you will never have that issue again :)

Great video! I like how u clear coated the inside, but I have a question. I have a Corvette I drive in mostly good weather here in NJ, but our streets are loaded with brine and salt and take months to clear up. I am ordering a set of chrome rims and plan on wiping them down with alcohol and coating them with Wipe new before tire installation. I personally think that stuff is awesome, what is your opinion on wipe new, although I am considering doing the clearcoat on the inside like u did and using the wipe new on the face. What is your opinion?
@LittleJimmyNorton5 жыл бұрын
Although my concern with the clearcoat is chipping, because of the thickness. My stock rims are polished and clear coated and clear coat chipped away on the inside area.
