I think the use of chritsian religious figures and imagery may mean something more as you pointed out, even if it's not on purpose. The main character views herself almost as god and act god-like in the sense of power dynamics. When she loses her beauty and subsequently power, the religious figures appear as censored.

8:09 I don't think white represents innocence in this case. White, in buddhist beliefs, represents death. She kills her old self at the beginning and we see a blood splatter. She's wearing white at the end and kills her famous self and we see a blood splatter. She's wearing white when we see the death of her beauty with the first bruise. As well as the fact her name is Lilico, lili -> lily, lilies are white.

the way u explained this is really wellspoken. i think the movie was so intresenting because the disturbingly beautiful shots of backgrounds mixed with the shakey untrusting view of lilico was just so emotional to watch.

Great video! Recently I've watched an anime movie, Perfect Blue by Madhouse (1998), which has very similar vibe. It shows the dark side of the entertainment industry. It goes from the uncomfortable to thriller while phsycological, uncanny all the way. The story is a bit chaotic, but I feel like it has its purpose. I love strong, maximalized views you showed of the Helter Skelter. Sometimes I miss these poster-like imigery from films.

Appreciated the background with the main actress! I had no idea that was the context behind the casting choice, but that's very clever. And also loved your visual analysis

This movie is bananas! I just saw it and had to come on here and see if anyone talked about it. I didn’t know about all that that went on with the lead actress. I think she’s totally out of the business now. I’ve always thought the words Helter Skelter are haunted like something in those words conjure up bad stuff. Thx for your analysis it was very good.

Completely disagree about not recommending watching it just because it's uncomfortable. So now we should only recommend stuff that allows us to stay in our comfort zone and never allow ourselves to be pushed forward by art and progress our minds and ideas? The movie perfectly encapsulates the problems in our society regarding the obsession with female beauty and eternal youth thats impossible to achieve, that defines our values as women and our worth. I recommend it to everyone i can, and everyone that has seen it should too. It's thriggering because it shows the truth we unfortunately have to live trough, and people need to be confronted by this.

I hope my comment doesn't come across as disrespectful, however, if you liked this movie I highly recommend "Final Girl Studios" analysis over this one. even the intro felt like you were dismissing the movie. I feel like with its powerful message, it also needs a very powerful analysis and this felt very surface-level, even with the way you immediately label Lilico as evil without delving into the toxic standard that shaped her into those behaviors
