I had An Octapad II in the late 1980s. In fact I bought it without having a clue what it did just because it looked so cool. Got it home and realised it had no in-built sounds, so hooked it up to my friend's Kawai K1... my first encounter with MIDI. I have a full TD drumkit now, with loads of extra pads but I quite fancy one of these SPDs and a couple of foot switches to play "minimalist" locales. Think it'd be quite cool and for once, I wouldn't need an 18-wheeler to take all my kit with me.

👉 FIRST AND FOREMOST… after a seemingly endless search and countless videos later, this is the first video that actually puts the unit into perspective for us cinematic composers. As the proud owner of a world-class DAW station, and a dream collection of vintage keyboards, one of which goes all the way back to 1864, I never thought I really needed any more gear. I even have the original OCTAPAD 8, from 1987, which is still awesome to this very day. This is the only video I’ve ever found that shows how this Octa 30 can be very useful for us cinematic music composers. Yes, I know this was originally designed for drummers in mind, but this is also a wonderful tool for the production of cinematic compositions for film. The fact that we can import wav files through a USB port via a thumb drive is a big home run. And we can see the control panel on our DAW screen. I will purchase another monitor screen just for the SPD-SX Pro. The 16 step sequencing feature is also a huge plus for film composers. Thank you. I will contact my sales engineer right away.

It won’t do sample chop to different pads, no trigger banks which would be useful and tap tempo a kit and it overwrites the tempo programmed unlike the previous model which is annoying for live playing. Losing the other 3 master fx buttons is annoying. It would have been fun to have 4 programmable buttons. No panning delay apart from 2 tap and 3 tap, no tempo matching for the loops(though I found that clunky anyway but others like it). Otherwise it’s a big step up in lots of audio routing and realism with velocity switching between layers. Extra trigger inputs are excellent. I love mine but miss certain things they left out.

@@cristaples holy smokes - then what is Roland thinking? Those decisions must have saved them money? Not sure about others, but tap tempo loop syncing is a prized feature. I’m staring think it makes more sense to just get pad controllers to run with software that provides the features I want. It really seems like Roland is nerfing this to save money somehow, like Apple does with their MacBooks - I.e they dare not add a touchscreen so they don’t eat into their iPad sales. I say this because in addition to the lost features, sorry, the included kits sound like cheap crap from the 90’s - stuff you’d expect from a 299.99 beginners Simmons kit when they first resurfaced in the early 2000’s. Hello, Oxibase! The SPD-SX Pro is velocity sensitive. Much like a real drum, the volume it outputs will be dependent on how hard it is struck. We have a full Roland kit and a Yamaha DTX 12 in the studio. These devices are great as MIDI controllers/input devices but the acoustic sounds are terrible. The multi-velocity multi-samples in Superior just blow them out of the water. I've used the DTX 12 and a couple of pedals for small live gigs on occasion simply for convenience, but otherwise those sounds don't get used on any recordings. A set of these pads along with EZ Latin Cuban Percussion will give you a great way to add percussion tracks to your recordings that not to far away from the real thing. Much much cheaper than purchasing a decent selection of real percussion instruments and also much more practical if you have limited studio space.

When you tweak a pad, or preset kit and want to go back will it save automatically the way you last left it. If I turn the machine off it stays where I last had it and any changes by default? Really sucks when I forget how it was but I messed it up or just don't remember all the previous parameters before I messed it up.

Hello, IslandDigital! The SPD-SX Pro can support eight total zones of trigger inputs. That could very well be enough zones to support an entire e-drum kit worth of pads and cymbals, but keep in mind that most electronic cymbals occupy multiple zones for bell and bow. Realistically, the SPX-SX Pro might be a little limited if using it in this way. I recommend looking into the Roland TM6 for this, which can support 12 total zones. Thanks for the interest!
