Hey, David! AVB requires both hardware and software support, both of which are not typically built-in to Windows laptops, but it can depend on the model. i think my avb driver on mac is missing. option is greyed out in audio midi set up. also in hardware section of advanced tap in network pref there is no AVB box to check. what can i do?

Great explanation. Just one question then, from a networktech-noob, how do I know if a switch supports AVB-priority? Do I need a special one from PreSonus to use AVB between their mixers/consols/racks etc? Or any switch that support AVB? And lastly - if my switch isn't made to give that priority to the AVB-connections, can I still use it to get the audio through but without priority over other digital traffic, or will it simply not work at all?

Hey, Johan TT. Thank you for checking out our video on AVB. AVB is an amazing audio network with extremely low latency and amazing quality. With AVB you can stream over 512 channels of audio. It is one of the new networked audio solutions on the market and the other big player next to Dante for the pro audio world. When using any AVB product you can use any AVB certified network switch to connect your gear. It does not have to be the same brand product. Personally, I like to stay with the same brand if possible, just so I know it has been 100% tested together. But it is not required. One of the best things about AVB is that it is an open standard that any manufacture can use in their products. This means that everyone’s gear should play nice together, and you can pick and choose components to your liking. As for your second question, I would not use anything else on the network other than my production equipment. It does say it can coexist with standard Ethernet networks, but for efficiency I am not sure I would ever put all of my infrastructure into the same network. Sweetwater thanks for the reply. To clarify my last question, I didn’t mean to connect the production equipment to the rest of the house general internet network to compete with Netflix and everything else. I meant to ask if I can use a general switch (that I happen to all ready have laying around) to connect the production gear and computer locally in a separate network. Can I get the equipment to “talk” to each other through that or is it necessary to buy a new special AVB-switch? I recently got the Studiolive 16R and is now using the USB option, and to be honest, the latency is very low compared to other interfaces anyway. So as long as I am not getting more AVB-connected gear, I guess AVB is more of a luxury than a need for me now. The original question was made before actually having the studiolive 16R installed in the studio. :)

@@johantt2591 You need a switch that is AVB compatible. Presonus, Motu, Arista, Cisco and some more switches are available. For consumers, I think Presonus and Motu are the mostly used. The Presonus switch is much more robust and features etherCon ports and PoE and built in power supply.

Is this device has something to do with us as a musician who wants to have our own monitor mix but lacks auxes.. Like we as a band have 10 members that plays simultaneously, but our mixer has only 4 auxes. By the way our mixer is the classic Presonus Studiolive 16.02.2

AVB ought to be more reliable, and much easier to set up. It never worked for connecting a MacBookPro to a new PreSounus 32SC mixer. MacOS never found the mixer.

You need two AVB devices to create a network. Otherwise it’s just a point to point connection. Once you have a second AVB device or hub MacOS will see an AVB Network.
