Yes, that is why I dont like tiktok. I know there are more content on it than teens dancing and flexing, but it still can appear on your timeline because it is entirely managed by algorithms. That is why I think it is the worst social network I seen: if you know that seeing people flexing on Instagram bothers you, you can unfollow them and they stop appearing on your timeline and the suggestions slowly start to shape your interests, on tiktok you cant do this.
@anniedangerface4 жыл бұрын
Jeff Sousa - i was gonna say this is what tik tok is doing better. you can completely tune your For You page. you hold down on a video you don't like and choose "not interested in this", give likes to those you do like, follow some hashtags you like, follow a few people who do things you like, and you've got a great personalized feed. it only took me a day or two of doing this to get a personalized feed. now practically every video i get is art, animals, makeup, or hard-to-describe trippy videos. (which is what i'm interested in!) besides from the first time i opened it, i've never gotten a dancing teen. maybe these tips will help you get a feed you like! i didn't enjoy the app until i learned about the Not Interested button and now it's one of my favorite social media apps :)

I've been on Byte since the beta in 2019 (and yes, we call ourselves "byters" lol). I'm with you with most of these points. Byte still has a long way to go to get anywhere close to TikTok's usability. It should be noted though that Byte's developers have explicitly stated that they don't want to maximize the addictiveness of Byte, unlike TikTok (which has seemingly maximized addiction-potential). There's obviously pros and cons to both approaches. That being said, it's improved so much since the beta, so I'm optimistic. It's very hard to judge an app's long-term potential when it's been around less than a year. You can only judge where it's currently at (which was obviously the purpose of this video). There are also other TikTok competitors in development (Instagram Reels and KZbin Shorts, for example), so I'm interested to see what happens in the short-form video content landscape over the next year. Anyway, I love your content. Keep it up!

Needs more than an app developer, the tiktok algorithm is pristine
@Liz_ArdE4 жыл бұрын
I honestly didn't even know that byte launched, and it's kinda ridiculous how primitive the app is in its current state given that these developers know how to make a good app. At this point, I think a total rebrand would be a good idea on byte's end. Sell byte as a way to make short-form content that is 1) openly transparent in what it does with your data 2) celebrates rather than suppresses LGBTQ+ creators and creators of color 3) doing away with anything else that is bad with tiktok (idk I never downloaded the app, all the good ones make it on twitter). Obviously marketing byte as vine 2 isn't working, so market it as tiktok but better since that's obviously what people are currently wanting. It might even be a good idea for byte's people to go directly to large tiktok creators and offer them automatic partnership with the understanding that they will move their platform to byte and that byte will actively work with these tiktokers to make byte better. Tiktokers may soon need a new platform, byte needs a community. They can make this work. As for all the people who were on byte waiting for it to become popular... uhhhh sucks to suck?

@Liz_ArdE4 жыл бұрын
@Karasu There is a large LGBT presence on tiktok but that's despite tiktok's best efforts. Tiktok banned "pro-LGBT" content in some countries and admitted at the end of last year to suppressing content from fat, disabled, and LGBT creators. It does seem that byte already has a set tag for LGBT content which is cool and definitely a step in the right direction.
@nerdythespian12124 жыл бұрын
It really depends what kind of content you are already making on TikTok to see if Byte would actually work for you. I am apart of the cosplay side of TikTok and many of them say Byte is not worth it for us because the restrictions in time and editing make it harder for many of them to create the stories and videos they want. I personally have to rely on quite a few eye filters for my characters because I cannot currently afford the contacts (or making the transition from eye looks would be far too difficult to make smooth).

"Biter" has been a slang word in hip hop that means "someone who bites (rips off or copies) other people's style" for a long time, so I'd find it hilarious if that took off as how they referred to themselves. And I wanna say, this app is still in early development. It is very likely Tik Tok will end up being banned in the US and probably in other western countries as well. It can definitely be replaced if the need arises, and most of these "Tik Tok stars" would fail at long-form content somewhere like KZbin, or they would create manufactured, obnoxious and unoriginal vlog or prank style trash in that already oversaturated category.

I used byte for about a month after launch. A creator who was larger than me reached out and mentioned he liked my content and wanted to add me to a creator group chat on Instagram. After I was added, everyone in the chat quickly found out it was a group formed solely for him to have a platform for self promoting every time he posted. The rest of us were trying to have a conversation and build our own community in between his self promo posts. The chat slowly turned into all of us self promoting and the creator of the chat telling us that if we left a like, commented and "rebyted" his content, he'd give us a rebyte too. Most of us went along with it because we wanted exposure and the opportunity to network, but it got old after a while. I haven't used the app in months because I didn't feel my work was paying off or a sense of community.
@Narwhal394 жыл бұрын
That really sucks that you ended up in an clout chasing circle instead of finding new friends that care about you personally. Personally I've never believed in trying to get exposure on the internet in general, and as an original beta tester I've grown used to the "niche" nature of Byte. I do like that the push of TikTokers has motivated the dev team to get back on development again because that has definitely become stagnant (probably due to the age of the Rona) and I do want Byte to grow but I hope that Byte doesn't steer too far from its niche vision and continue pushing for "creativity first".

As a cosplayer, Byte offers literally nothing for us. With tiktok, we use a lot of different audios and music to display characters, and the speed editing allows us to look more animated. There USED TO BE a real sense of community on Byte. Maybe because the app was relatively empty, but since the first beta (which happened mid-2019, we've been there for a loooong while) it felt like everyone had at least once seen everyone, as long as they were kinda active. There was also a real sense of acceptance. Hate comments just plain didn't happen as far as I could see, never encountered it until the recent Tiktok invation, and then it was all the tiktokers being as toxic as possible to people that were being welcoming and giving them tutorials and all. Things calmed down now, and people from tiktok seem to be enjoying the less toxic atmosphere of the app. Also, the ghost thingy is for things like stop motion, I think. Haven't used it, but I think it shows you a transparent version of the last frame you took in the previous clip.

It’s generally quite a tough decision, I just think that having all subscriber numbers private will put people off subscribing in general... :\

1st: byte isn't a tik tok alternative, it's a continuation of Vine 2nd: it got banned because USA and China are in an economical war, that's why USA banned Huawei too.

I would love more videos on alternative social media & content apps/sites! Other alt stuff for things like Twitter, Insta, Tumblr Tik tok, Soundcloud, KZbin, Twitch etc.

i agree with almost everything here, but i think keeping follower counts private is a really good idea. making it optional strikes me as the same kind of well-intentioned foolishness as 'every lane is a bike lane.' if showing your follower count is optional, money-hungry famous people will choose to show it, and people who are embarrassed about having few followers won't. it'll encourage people to speculate about others follower counts, which will only worsen the clout-chasing tumblr is a godawful website, but it's devoid of the soulless scammers of instagram and the deranged god complexes of twitter largely because the hidden follower count negates any potential benefits of fame. just because it's not an active draw for new users doesn't mean it's not a good thing

Pleading for people to unplug from the internet every once in a while is such a mood. I used to do that for whole weekends at a time. What has happened to me!?! 😭

The ghost is what animators call onion skin. You see a transparent version of the last frame filmed over the camera, original vine had this. It's great for animation, stop motion, transitions and loops. I'm really surprised tiktok doesn't have it yet.

Oh my god I love that shirt. If it’s what I think it’s based on this old ad that used to play on my old DVDs where they would play a clip from a black and white movie of a couple very dramatically separating. In between these clips they would have these text blurbs in that font come up and say how pirating movies was a crime. It was the most dramatic commercial with the weirdest music choice. Ignore this if that’s not the reference but if it is this makes me SO very happy

AS someone who isn't on social media nearly as much as the rest of my generation, I always find it weird when these things happen and my friends make a big deal out of it. Not being connected has really saved me stress

Same here. Social media is fine for most interests but once it learns about your ideology (and it will) it becomes an echo chamber and people get weird about leaving their chambers.

Byte is totally the Dreamwidth to TikTok's LiveJournal. And just like with LJ my prediction is that if TikTok ever does actually fail then its users will end up on a completely unrelated platform with a new format and different features rather than a clone. I remember everyone on my LJ friends list saying they were gonna be on Dreamwidth, but instead we all ended up on Tumblr. It's fascinating to watch this perpetual cycle of social media sites rising and falling. Your advice to diversify and to always save your content is solid. People talk about everything being forever on the internet, but the truth is that a lot of content gets lost, especially when big sites go down.

I don't use byte, but I like the idea that the creator can see the follower count but the followers themselves can't. It still allows for creators to get brand deals, sponsors, money or whatever without the competition stress.

I think I downloaded TikTok once and was like this is kinda funny but got bored quick. I found out about Byte with everyone else who jumped ship from TikTok except I did it because I heard this was the new Vine. I missed the boat entirely on Vine during its first go around but I loved the content after the fact. I'm hoping they keep adding features but it's fine with me if it stays simpler.

I get the feeling that Byte itself, not the previously established user base, doesn't want to make themselves the new Gen Z Tik Tok alternative. They would have already thought of even some of this and implemented it.
@nerdythespian12124 жыл бұрын
As someone who is on the cosplay/original character side of TikTok, none of those creators (at least that I personally follow) have went to Byte due to the simplicity and the fact you can't film as long on them (tiktok gives you the option of 15sec or up to 60sec). Most creators I know are going to DubMash. However, this has started a new drama in the cosplay side of tiktok because the current users of DubMash are stating they do not want cosplayers coming over and taking over their platform that people have claimed to be a majority of black and poc creators (when i had DubMash for a day, it seemed to be mostly children. oldest being maybe 12 years old).

The fact that Gen Z was bullying the Millennials off of Byte is so annoying. I’m apart of Gen Z and that just makes everyone (and the rest of Gen Z) think we are all very entitled and annoying 😂

Elio I understand that, but they also love to act like they’re better than every other generation to exist. I’m mostly judging Gen Z off of TikTok and what I see from there, so I very much could be wrong.
