I just love the way you think. Shelling in the water -- "it feels like a video game to me!" That sunrise was stunning! And when it was over, you consoled yourself, "but now I can see the seashells much better." I admit, I tend to charge into the water when there are dolphins. Never really thought twice about it, but next time I'll hear your voice, "I don't want to be knocked over by an 800 pound dolphin, thank you very much!" And thank YOU very much for taking me along on another beautiful shell-filled beach walk.

My mom found Sanibel in a 1/16 page ad in a magazine in the late 80s. We’ve gone for thanksgiving most years since. Love this place, reminds of simpler days. Back then you could spend 8 hours on the beach and see maybe 10 elderly couples shell hunting.

Sending hugs... caregiving can be a huge job, even with help. I hope you can take a break every so often. We were able to utilize a home care agency to help with both sets of parents. If that's an option for you (and you're not doing it already), I hope you'll give it a try. I know you want to do everything for him yourself, familiar with that feeling, but if your health breaks down because of exhaustion, that's no good either. Sorry.. I know I'm jumping in with advice when I know nothing about your situation... but I'm concerned about you (and about your DH as well, of course). I'm glad you could take a short midweek break and enjoy beach-walking!

I have to admit this winter has been overall a little bit "slower" than I would have liked. Typically the shells are just there in the winter, but I'm finding it harder to find them too. It's not just you or the island - it's been a weird winter.

That was a great walk and a beautiful sunrise! Nice to see the hotel ready to reopen, too, and the beach work that has been done! Lots of good finds, as usual! You know, the reason I don't learn the latin names are because I have no idea how to pronounce them--same with botanical names! Maybe we should start with some easier ones, like the nauticas/naticas or the cones!
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife Жыл бұрын
The only reason I'm interested in the scientific names is they don't change from region to region. Some of these shells are called different things in different areas and it makes it confusing. The scientific name is the same no matter where you find the shell or critter. I'm more of a relaxed type of gal, but there is an appeal there for me to learn at least a few of those scientific names 😌

We came back with so many shells last trip to Florida. So hard to walk away without bringing them home.😅

May I ask what is the parking app that one needs to park on Sanibel Island? Thank you in advance. Last time we were there we just Fed the ticket printout meter.

I used an app called ParkMobile and it's a white P in a green field. It's actually kind of convenient to just add time through the app instead of running back to your car 😃

True shark eyes and false shark eyes. Are they created by entirely different animals? Or are the false ones made by critters who just didn't follow the standard playbook?
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife Жыл бұрын
Someone REALLY interested in these critters did some DNA testing and the animals are indeed wee bit different. They essentially look the same, but they make their shells a little different. It's a miracle I even know about the difference. There is not a lot of good shell info out there!

Beautiful. I'm so jealous. I need the beach so bad right now and enjoy your channel so much. Wondering why you are talking so fast in your video though. Have I accidentally changed my tv settings, or did you change something?

I'm talking the same speed as always! There is a setting that you can change the playback speed. I use it when I want to get t through a video quickly 😃

My son and daughter-in-law are going to Anna Maria Island in March with their two daughters and I'd love to book a shelling expedition for them. Are there any Florida Naturalists that offer shelling tours from Anna Maria?

i have another question: every time you pick up any type of scallop shell i have a bit of a pavlov drool response 'cause i LOVE eating scallops so...my question do you eat sea food ie shellfish;)? what types, if any, of the shellfish you collect are eatable?
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife Жыл бұрын
Yes, I do eat shellfish. If I had an active fishing license, I would be able to keep live quahogs and sunray venus clams.

Am heading to Marco second week in may want to go to lovers key and sanibel. Where to park in sanibel. Can u park anywhere to shell in south fort meters???? Is there anywhere that has sea urchins
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife Жыл бұрын
Sanibel has public beaches open all over the island so you'll have no troubles there. Lover's Key is open and has plenty of parking so you'll be okay there too. There is no parking on the south end of Fort Myers Beach. You can either find off street parking as far south as you can or you can take the trolley or uber.

I've been here on Sanibel today. I would of been so excited to meet you. I have spent the day trying to find a place to park my RV. The only camp ground doesn't allow dogs. So I never got to go out on the beach yet. I am hoping I get out on this beautiful beach. Do you know where I can Park my RV. I'm so frustrated. I just want to go out on the beach.

Another difference btwn a shark eye and a false shark eye is the direction of the spiral. Shark eyes spiral to the right and false shark eyes spiral to the left.

Spent many miserable Christmas vacations on Sanihell. When I saw what the hurricane did to the rampant overbuilding, I wasn't bummed. I felt badly for the folks who actually like it there, but glad I never have to go back.
