I am from the Eastern Shore of Maryland so I grew up swimming with sea nettles in the Bay (Chesapeake Bay, that is). Any dock/beach/landing worth its salt kept jugs of ammonia where we were swimming so if we got stung we could wash the area. The worst thing you could do, after being stung, was wipe water off your face with your hands as you exited! Wowee, that did some lasting damage. You always make even low-haul trips so interesting; your love of the beach always come through. I am so very pleased you are gaining recognition for the quality videos you put together. Can't wait for the zoom call on the 27th! ❤

I was so surprised to learn those sea nettles were found most abundantly in the Chesapeake Bay of all places. I did not know that and I had never seen one until this trip. I would NOT want to get stung by one of those. I was stung my an urchin once and that venom is no joke! Thank you so much for coming along on my beach walk and I'll see you on Thursday!

What a beautiful day on the beach. With a few treasures and sunshine. When my kids were little we loved the thunder and lightning storms that would roll through. The power would sometimes go out, we would sit in the living room (both kids on my lap) and giggle and laugh. The kids would always say, that was a big one. Until the next one came around. My kids are grown, but now I get to enjoy the thunder and lightning storms with my grandkids and they love them just as much. ❤️

Hi my beach friend, I'm sorry that you didn't find that much on Sanibel Island. I really hoped you would find a wentletrap or another amazing shells from your bucket list! But the shells you have found were gorgeous! Really loved the under water video's. They were so cool! That strange critter in that apple murex looks like a juvenile Hermit Crab, sitting upside down. (Thank you Google 😁) Wishing you a wonderful week with lots of sunshine, beautiful beach finds and lots of happiness! Big hug and lots of love, xoxo ❤, Ilona

Well...I just happen to be in Florida right now (from Chicago) but we did not have time to go to any beach. We're in Palm Harbor visiting the grandsons! Had a blast but we have to keep going! We got back to our hotel and I noticed they have used shells as "mulch" around the plants. Guess what? I found some coral! Too funny, hunting shells around the hotel! We are headed back up the East coast, so hopefully have time on those beaches. When our 2 1/2 week trip ends, we'll have driven over 3000 miles in our new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. We're getting almost 40 mpg! Love it!

I finally found one of 2 of my bucket list shells at pass a grill beach, 9, yes 9 lightning whelks measuring 10 to 12 inches and my absolute favorite, a 14 inch horse conch. I can't post pics to this comment thread or I'd send them. Some of the whelks still have their color, but the others are nice but alittle aged. I think I'm going to make them into candles. And the fish you saw I believe were called Sargent majores. They are a very common reef fish. Great video as always!

@@SWFBeachLife I couldn't believe it it, I was out snorkeling and went out alittle farther than I usually do in about 10 feet of water and the bottom was littered with them. There were actually more, but they were pretty neat up. I can't imagine anything topping that for a day of shelling.

Loved the underwater footage! Even if you didn't find many keepers, at least you saw critters! I'm still sticking to my claim that it's one of the best shelling beaches in FL. If you visit again, keep in mind the beach park itself gets really busy, and the shells get picked out literally in a blink of an eye. I recommend you walk as far as you can away from there, and try the stretch of beach where the houses/condos are. No public parking there so a lot less competition there. I talked to another sheller there when I visited last and he said he also has the best luck around where the Sanibel Arms west condos are. Happy shelling!

I like the challenge, so I will continue to try that beach. I have yet to find anything good, but I loved being able to record those jellies. Looks like I'll have to wait until February to get a 2022 parking pass. That should open things up a bit for me too! Thanks for all the great tips!

Those clouds made for a spectacular view! Also, I'd love to see some micro shelling if you ever decide to film some. It'd be nice to see the baby versions of the bigger shells you find. They are not perfect, but they're inexpensive and do a decent job once you pull the liner out of the shoe: amzn.to/3wIwanv The liner just keeps more sand trapped in the shoe. Sand will get in the shoes, but it's not as bad as some of the other shoes I've tried. I'm still looking for the perfect solution and I'll be sure to share once I find it!

I'm so glad that you took some underwater shots. I downloaded the Tide Charts app that you showed...I have to figure out how to find the weather/lightning section in there, but I still have a few days. Looking forward to checking out some of the areas that you have toured. Thanks for everything that you do!

We were at Sanibel a couple of weeks ago. We didn’t find much at the lighthouse beach but the water was beautiful. We had luck at Turner beach. Do you have any suggestions to not get eaten by noseeums? They were brutal!
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 3 жыл бұрын
Those noseeums are THE WORST. I have spray that works marginally - I usually just stay away from the bushes and vegetation. Those bugs aren't very strong so if there is wind they won't bother you. They don't normally "bug" me at all except with there are no winds. I've heard dryer sheets work too but I think it's just one of the downsides of being in paradise 🌴

That area is good for wentletraps: you need to hunt in the tide pools left as the tide goes out. I know, I found one that was a full inch and a half long there. But the best wentletrap I ever found was at Delnor Wiggins State Park after tropical storm Keith. It was closer to two inches, and was empty so I could keep it. Wiggins can be good for shelling if you go up on the beach along the pass, I have also found fossils there, including the fossilized ear drum of a whale. (No I'm not kidding)
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife Жыл бұрын
I only went there once and since I found it to be rather "meh" I have not returned for the shells. However, that is incredible that you found that monster sized one. And I loved that the parking was so close to the beach for anyone who might have mobility issues.
@hannahpumpkins4359
@hannahpumpkins4359 2 жыл бұрын
The area by the lighthouse itself and around the parking lot is FILLED with fossil seashells! Some are in fact kind of rare - I've found enough there in mere minutes to round out my collection of fossil shells. You should check it out - one you start collecting fossils, you'll never stop! Also, in Key Largo at John Pennekamp State Park there's a saltwater lagoon across from the parking lot that is FILLED with Moon Jellyfish - some are 6' in diameter or more, and gorgeous colors; bright pink, purple, etc - every time I went snorkeling in there I found it interesting that, despite there being jellyfish everywhere, not one even came close to me - it looked like they seemed to know, somehow, that I was there. It was so gorgeous I've never seen anything like it (I used to live in Marathon, in the Keys).BTW, you should look for the elusive Peanut Butter Fish; they're known to be found near the Jellyfish - LOL!!!!
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is those fossil shells are dug up elsewhere in Florida and used as parking lot substrate! I've found some neat fossil shells at the causeway. You can buy them in bags from Lowe's and Home Depot here. It's crazy! And I've been to John Pennekamp State Park. We rented kayaks and paddle boards. I didn't get to see all those jellies - I'll guess I'll have to go back!

Question for those with shell knowledge. We found a gorgeous Lightning Whelk in the water at Bowman's Beach. It was inhabited by a Hermit Crab, so we photographed it and returned it to the water. But we felt something gooey on the top outer part of the shell and noticed it later in the photo. The top was covered with something that was the same brilliant orange color as the shell. Any ideas what that may have been?
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 3 жыл бұрын
My guess would be some sort of sea liver (tunicates) had attached itself to the shell. Without seeing the photo I don't know for sure but feel free to email me at swfbeachlife@gmail.com and I can try to figure out what it is 🤗 PS - thanks for being awesome and returning the shell where it belong!
