It definitely had life earlier today and I heard chirps a few times, but I sadly believe things have changed now🥲. This is my 1st time ever seeing an egg do that during a hatch. Prayers for egg #1 to hatch healthy for this awesome new couple!!🙏🐣🦅❤️🙏

I just watch M15 roll the other egg but ignored the crushed egg, didn’t see any movement at all. I think there is going to be heartbreak in the morning when that egg will be visible under natural light.

Maybe the chick got squished when the integrity of the shell broke down. Perhaps the cracking around the pip was aggravated by contact with the other solid egg as it was being sat on.

I just wish the people who run these cameras can be a little honest with their viewers. I just sat through a chat when they said they have never seen anything like this before but at the same time they said its a normal hatch. They miss identified the egg in the beginning and thats why they want to stick to this narrative. This egg was not due to hatch for another 2 days so it was definitely crushed accidentally by one of the parents, there was never a pip.

So, like all of you, who have watched so faithfully, I will be sad and disappointed for M and F if both these eggs don’t hatch….I’m wondering how they feel as it is so hard to apply human thoughts and feelings to these magnificent creatures. But, I’m still hopeful that there is a positive outcome! Any offspring will be welcome and assure us as the New Year rings in that life continues and we as individuals, can only hope to make it better.

Eaglet wasn’t strong enough to break out, the final stage of hatching, there’s 3 phases of hatching, it’s a real job of strength & the membrane inside plays a huge roll in the final birth. Her first clutch also.

I don't think anyone can say that this is her first clutch. She seemed very experienced all summer, there is no way to know F23's history. Just sayin'

This started from the indentation seen a couple of days ago and the egg has lost structural integrity ever since. Lady Hawk has posted a ton of info about it in her latest post. I might be wrong but but I highly doubt it has anything to do with F being a first time mother. More like a rare occurrence/just one of those things that unfortunately can happen with any egg.

This may be her first clutch with M15..BUT i highly doubt it's her first clutch ever..she looks very experienced to me..compared to new moms i have witnessed before..aka Gabby NEFL and at the Trio nest after we lost Hope..but we don't know anything about F23s past.

The shell is cracked or broken before the embryo has fully developed inside. The shell becomes thinner and more fragile as the incubation period proceeds because the chick absorbs some of the calcium into its developing bones. If an incubating parent moves suddenly in response to an unexpected event like an intruder or human disturbance, it might breach the shell. Parental missteps are rare, even in situations that appear to be violent on cam. Hatching failure Another cause of egg loss is hatching failure, when a chick begins the hatching process but dies before it is able to fully emerge. Hatching is strenuous work that requires intense effort. Several of the risks described above can make hatching difficult or impossible. Other circumstances that can lead to hatching failure are: Rupture of the chorioallantoic membrane that lines the eggshell, which can damage the capillaries embedded in it and cause blood loss, or can lead to infection. (Snelling 1972, 1303) This may be one reason parents avoid assisting in hatching except sometimes near the end of the process when the membranes are already breached (Brua 2002); Accidental damage by a parent or sibling before hatch is complete; A “capped shell,” where a large part of shell from a previously hatched egg slips over the large end of the hatching egg, forming a double layer of shell that the chick might not be able to break through. She stepped on this egg and destroyed it and the baby must have tried to escaoe and couldnt. Clumsy i have never seen that happen on this nest before
