Thanks for sharing the Hintful Tips! That sure is a purdy fence. I chuckled every time The Dragon said Picket! In high school there was this guy named Pickett. He was a dainty guy who always dressed up in genteel clothes. All the girls thought he was cool. One day a jock was watching him in class… he whispered to us…. “Look at Pickett.” We did and saw him pick his nose. He then rolled the booger around in his finger… like he was trying to made a spit wad. That got us to laughing and everyone looked to see what was up. Pickett turned red and froze with the booger in his fingers… right in front of his face. Before long the word spread… several nicknames circulated until one stuck. He became known as ‘Noselette’… pronounced Noz-a-let. It was common for one guy to say, “Hey Noselette.” And another to reply, “He’ll pick it!” At our last class reunion I was standing with my back to the door when Pickett came through. The guy I was talking to saw him and shouted out, “Hey Noselette!” About a half dozen others shouted back, “He’ll pick it!” You know, that was my fiftieth class reunion…. I don’t remember much of what I learned back in 1971 but… the memory of those fingers rolling around a little green ball popped right into my forebrain at that moment! I hope I can get past it and watch the video again… because I know I missed a few of The Dragon’s Hintful Tips! Go ahead and try to have a good danged day

Building this type of cedar fence, but with board-on-board pickets using (stainless steel) screws all the way. Does the pneumatic nailer pierce the steel posts, or do you just avoid them? I've resorted to predrilling (9/64" for #8 screws) for those situations. Thrilled to see my beautiful fence materializing. Thanks for the helpful videos!

7:30 I'm still a little foggy on how you adapted the topline of the fence to the changes in slope. I suppose you either have to compromise with the gap at the bottom or have the fence match the rolling contours of the yard. Does the line run perfectly level from corner to corner, or is there a slight bend where you restarted your string there? Would've been cool to have a zoomed-out shot of the finished project.
@SWiFence7 ай бұрын
That's a great point--we're trying to remember to show the finished product at the ends of videos these days. So he rolled the fence to blend more with the contours of the yard, and that rolling happened when he set the posts to height. Then when he sets string he wants to make sure he doesn't run it past any posts that are rising or falling.

According to Postmaster, on the hinge side of the gate you should be butting two of the metal fence posts up against each others for more strength. Then you can screw two 2 x 2 into each other. Or, weld the fence posts together.
@davetamplen3428 ай бұрын
Question: should I leave a 3/16" gap between the pickets for expansion in wet weather??? Or do you prefer just butting them together???

We use cedar, so it's more about the home-owner's stylistic preference for us. If you're using something besides cedar you should probably research that wood and yes, you may need to leave space.

Can you tell if postmaster posts can be used to install a lattice to already existing fence. Second question, can you connect 2 post together to extend the height for the lattice (6ft fence 2 ft lattice)? Overall I like the idea of using it. Thanks
@thedivide368811 ай бұрын
They make postmaster posts to 12 feet. If you are adding lattice to an existing fence you are laying it on top of the top rails and adding horizontal supports. There are specific extension kits for fence extensions not what a postmaster post is designed for.

No, because they've been driven into the ground. You can also dig and set them in concrete if your soil doesn't allow for driving.

Do you think that leaving a 1/8th inch gap between the fence pickets would keep the fence looking nicer by allowing air in between each one to allow water to dry out after rain and snow?
@SWiFence2 жыл бұрын
It might hide any shrinkage of the pickets when they dry out--but I don't think it'll help with drying overall.

Fantastic video. Here in Houston we close the entire society for heavy rain. One flake of snow and we are like nuclear winter here. Schools are closed, all work is closed, it won't last long so you don't have to worry about having enough water in the bathtub. You can watch the crazies on the road on TV, it looks like something out of "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome." Cars spun out, cars in ditches, cars stalled all over town. To see this guy working in snow as if it's nothing is surreal. Couldn't these people wait until spring for their fence?
@SWiFence Жыл бұрын
It was actually below zero for a good chunk of that day. 😁 Life continues to go on around here even when the temperature dips, and if we put off everything until Spring that would be seen as a lot of needless waiting. 👍🏻

@@SWiFence I used to have to go and replace cedar fence pickets in winter here in Oregon.The reason was I worked for Lowe’s doing fence installation for a local contractor. He used to tell us to install without a gap in the fence boards. The cedar was swelling and popping out on a few sections due to all the rain we get (Willamette Valley, Oregon.) So occasionally in winter this would be a problem and they’d send me out to replace them with ripped down ones to fit. It wasn’t all the time but it was enough to be annoying. Maybe it’s dry enough in Wyoming to not be an issue. If using fir or Japanese cedar it is even worse. It slows me down spacing some but prevents boards pushing out due to swelling around here. There’s plenty of stories on the internet about this problem. I’m guessing wetter environments than yours. That’s great you guys use postmasters. Saves a lot of trouble with warping, twisting and rot. I’ve done a few fences with them and I’m impressed. Im still looking into using a post driver to pound them in instead of concrete. Most of my customers ask for concrete here though so far. I like your work, and the KZbin vids you do.

@@SWiFence Question: do the Postmaster fences need a center rail (for a total of 3), or can we just use two to have symmetry with an existing wood-post fence that only has top and bottom rails?
@SWiFenceАй бұрын
I wouldn't recommend skipping the center rail. It adds a lot of structural integrity, plus your pickets will be prone to warp without that center rail holding them in place.
