I think the point here was that the coach knew no one could die in 3 minutes, at best hospitalized. And they came there to be olympians not some summer swimming champions , if they cant handle that , they would break their ownselves and get the reputation of the club down by doing something silly later on. Now this is a film so i am not talking objectively , just that that was the intention of the film , in reality if this happens then it follows the same general concept but obviously if you are drowning, you may want to compare the value of actions to your goal.

Believe it or not, this isn't just a skit. There are seriously coaches like this. They push their students past their threshold which literally puts them in a make or break position. I wasn't a swimmer , but I had a militant coach who was very good at the sport we played. But his rule was you don't stop till you pass out or show bone. You would think that if someone were to throw up, they'd get a break. Nah. It's not like that. You don't stop. 100 degree weather ? Don't stop / no water breaks till your done. I've left this coach after two years of training with him, because I debated quitting the sport because of him. During the summers, I trained for 7-8 hours a day. I took 90 minute drives, starting at 8am to get to practice, and during those car drives, I would fcking shake in fear because I never knew what was to happen that day. I couldn't even imagine what military training , especially navy seal training, must feel like

I like how people think that small production companies that make short films have the budget to hire professional swimmers that can also act.
@capnjs3 жыл бұрын
They could have made the time in the script more believable. 100m in under 50 as a 16 year old (with no tech suit or warm up) is a complete joke. You would literally have every top college beating down your door with a full ride. They could have at least had the budget for tall actors, who could more believably go that fast, or they could have, oh I don't know... made the time more realistic?!! That would be the low hanging fruit here. It does't take a huge budget to do a few minutes of research and find out what kind of time would be impressive for someone at his age and career level. All the swimming times are public and easy to look up.

I see this in a deeper light: It perfectly represents the cold hard competitive paradoxical truth of life. We were always told that in order to survive and succeed in life, we have to out-smart, out-run, out-do our peers, be ruthless. Even with subtle examples like who scored the highest, who gets the promotion, etc. Yet, at the end of theday, we are all humans capable of emcompassing emotions like empathy and compassion, which often times we were too scared/embarassed to show/express under the pressure of social conventions.

100m in under 50 seconds puts you at the top level in the world. At 16, that would be a world age group record. That would be a high school national record in the us. It would be the fastest time in a lot of colleges. Virtually no one swims that fast. But when they do, they create a hell of a wake. Everyone standing on the side would be getting splashed. You would see a huge wave. During the flip turn, he wouldn't be on the wall long enough to even get a meaningful underwater shot. We are talking Olympic finals speeds here. It's a short course pool, but they only show one turn. If it was SCM, under 50 is more doable, but still way out of this guy's league. With his small build, he should really be in another sport. There are no swimmers anywhere near that fast under 6 feet tall. Caeleb Dressel's WR time is only 47. That's only 2 seconds faster than this. It's so unbelievable, it's just ridiculous. And to just do that off of no warm up, with no taper, and no tech suit. Literally the fastest swimmer in the world would not be doing that. No swimmer was consulted in the writing of this film.

Swam for 8 years with clubs and a bit of highschool varsity team. I have to admit, there were times that the clubs especially had coaches that would push kids (8-12) to their limits. I remember so many times where I’d nearly drown trying to finish some of their insane sets and while I understand that in order to get better you need to push yourself, swimming is a bit different as even catching a breath takes energy

@Quinleyy3 жыл бұрын
@@undercovervog1488 but he should be at the level where the perfect form should be second nature to him. just because he's swimming fast doesn't mean he should just totally disregard his technique. that wouldn't work either way because the purpose of technique is to be able to apply it into swimming and your races; technique is supposed to decrease drag which would help you go faster in the water. also it wasn't "a freestyle", freestyle is a stroke. please think out your arguments before typing them out :)

Reasons like this are EXACTLY why we shouldn’t teach our children to blindly obey authority if it doesn’t feel right. In fact I would even go so far as to say we should teach our children it’s OKAY to not obey if it doesn’t seem right. They can do it in a respectful way. (One easy way to start doing this is to not let anyone force affection on your kids. )
