Although combining live-action and animation was not a novelty by 1953, it's still really impressive, especially considering that Esther's scenes for this sequence were filmed underwater. Just to think they were able to film, edit and animate this in full color and high quality over 65 years ago is amazing.

Scott Bradley is a genius. His music elevates this scene so much. The score is beautiful. I love the piano flourishes when Tom and Jerry nod their heads. It's all wonderful.

MGM really liked Tom and Jerry, they kept them theatrical all the way until 1969, when most studios by that time had already shut down their theatrical animation department.

My favorite part of the movie. In this dream, she's training to swim the English Channel and the Octopus represents the French man she falls in love with while training (he sings that song earlier in the movie). It's a pretty good movie, her family is so cute, I highly recommend it.

Is there any info on how these effects were achieved? I’m assuming it was something like Esther would have been in a large glass tank with a blue screen behind it and they were both lit accordingly? Must have been so hard to get the lighting even.

They use that love-struck octopus again in an episode of "Tom & Jerry Tales"; where he got the hots for a mermaid (who is actually Tom all covered in seaweed, shells, and a fishing net). And thank goodness that Tom & Jerry saved that woman from being what could've lead to a tentacle sex act! O_O

The longest I stayed underwater was at my local swimming pool. Besides doing snorkeling I have also used a monofin and tail. I mostly do the dolphin kick in the water above and below the surface.
