Chicken are loving pets. They're smart and have feelings. They do communicate too. Some do like being in the water. We had one rooster that would love taking a shower with my kids when they were just toddlers. Happy to see a happy chicken being taken to see the world. Thank you for making me smile.

Ikr. All birds are very intelligent animals, have a strong emotions and a special ability to bond, to feel connection to humans and to feel love and affection. My mom, after she got retired, got herself hens and chickens in the back garden, so she could have fresh eggs and something to do. You would not believe much her chickens love her and understand her. They walk around like pets and she trained them like dogs. I was surprised how smart and lovely they are. They literally understand when she talks to them and she was able to teach them many comands. It is really amazing to see.

This is basically me who is 16 with my rooster who is a Rhode Island Red, i hatched him with my homemade incubator made from a bucket and he was the only one who made it till 21 days and hatched out. We both are bonded with each other since he was a chick and he used to be in my pocket all the time and cries when he is away from me. He is always with his girls in the coop protecting them but he doesn't run away when I come to pick him and he always has something to say and makes funny noises when his is with me. He also loves to eat from my hand

Thanks for sharing, this reminds me when I had a tiny Bantam Serama hen when I was 13. She followed me whenever I go and cried when I had to put her in the coop cage. Sadly, she got mauled by a dog and died. She was almost 4 years old.

I know how you feel I met two roosters at my farm school they grew up and on the farm there were to many roosters so a older full grown rooster was processed and we had room for only 3 i took navada home his brother mango missed him but mango was ok navada fit in well with are flock but her became protective so we found him a new home in combust we keep in totch with him and oh boy I cried when he had to go to Columbus but I’m happy he is ok

I have rescued battery chickens and what a delight they are, especially to see the chicken blossom and regain their feathers they lost whilst being crammed into tiny cages. Each chicken has a unique personality of their own like dogs and cats. Not only do they make wonderful companions but they gift you with fresh eggs daily. Love chickens!

Sammi is a SWEETHEART!! I have had 3 chickens, who I rescued. One had belonged to a neighbor of a friend in town. The neighbor had a big dog, and the people let the dog chase the chicken around the yard, and the chicken would, finally, find a safe place to hide. "PHEW!! She got away that time," they would say, as they watched what was happening in the neighbor's backyard. They had seen this going on, and tried to talk to the neighbor, who would not listen. Then one day the dog got ahold of the chicken and tore off one of her wings. They got the chicken out of the yard, but could not keep her at their house, because they knew that the neighbor would be looking for her. They asked me to take her, and I did. The second chicken had managed to escape from a Foster Farms truck as it was driven past our house. She hid in one of our garages. I caught her, and tamed her down. She grew, and grew, until she doubled to tripled in size. She became the biggest chicken, that I had ever seen. I used to carry her around the ranch inside of my sweatshirt with the zipper down a ways for her head to stick out to enjoy the view. I called her "Baby Huey," after the cartoon character of a duckling who got bigger than his siblings. A friend's husband worked for Foster Farms, and he told me that their chickens are bred to get real big, real fast, so their hearts get big, also. This gives them a shorter lifespan, even if they were not slaughtered when only partially grown. I kept her in a cool building during the summer, because I was told that they have difficulty handling the heat. I lost her in the summer, but I think that she had a heart attack because of the size of her heart. The third chicken arrived inside our fenced in area of the ranch. She was sitting up in a walnut tree. This was a fighting chicken hen. I knew that she belonged to my neighbor, so I asked him about the chicken. He said, that he was going to just ... "eat her." I said, "How about I buy you a chicken at the store, and you let me find your chicken a home." He said, "Okay." So I bought, and delivered him a grocery store chicken, caught his chicken (who must have sensed her pending doom, because it took me awhile to get her to come down from that tree), and I gave her to that same friend, whose husband worked at Foster Farms, because she had a bunch of chickens as pets, that she let run free in a pasture. She became a real character of a chicken, who was always the first one to arrive in the barn when the chickens were called at feeding time. I went there to see how she was doing, and it was the funniest thing to see her running in as fast as she could at feeding time. She reminded me of the cartoon character, "The Roadrunner," because fighting chickens' bodies are thin and leggy. She was one happy chicken. All 3 of these chickens were real sweet and fun birds, who I am glad to have known.

I saved 30 Something chickens from a Battery Farm and gave them all homes. The next year I did the same. And again, and again. But this year? I found 2 white sister chickens. They adorable. I called them Snowflake and Snowdrop. They both LOVE attention and love. I will still continue this every year. :) Edit/Update 23/May/2020: We got 6 more during quarantine!! All are doing okay btw. But seriously all of them are okay, we lost a few due to old age but at least we gave them a good home.

Howling at the Sun my mother had pet chickens and they can make gorgeous, lovable pets! You just need to be mindful of bathroom issues. Puppy pads are great, and some people even use tiny chicken diapers. I know, sounds goofy, but it works if you keep the chicken with you inside!

Liam Collier No, for me there isn’t. Those you eat also have individual personalities and the ability to suffer. No one should be eating animals if he/she/it isn’t depending on it for survival - and most of us today aren’t. Moreover it’s healthier for ourselves and much better for the planet. I can recommend the channels of Simnett Nutrition and Hench Herbivore.

@@hopefilledsinner3911 So true. I had backyard chickens, and every time I opened the sliding door (with a wooshing sound (they associated the woosh of the door with food)), the chickens would all run to me expecting food and when I go and hug them, they just bok and lose interest.
