i've become a proponent of the 2 beat cadence for the swimmers i deal with...................adults and seniors who take my stroke improvement classes. i've seen how a slower tempo is the key to developing a smooth, efficient stroke. none of us have tempo trainers but i try to set an audible tempo on deck and they seem to be able to pick that up. that smooth, flowing, loping stroke helps them establish a neuro muscular pathway for what looks like effortless swimming. it takes some practice but they are getting better. i also have them do a 6 beat with 3 kicks on each entry and it shows them the difference between the 2 cadences ( tempos).

FINIS just recently developed what I call the "ankle buoy". I dont know if it has another name, it is a buoy thst you attach to your ankles. What I feel is that it arches my back.

Tomas Artinano Tomas Artinano it probably does. You can try it again with the focus of engaging your core which is in one of my most recent videos below: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHXQcoaFnph_g5o If it is still bother your back, take it off and focus on not kicking. Keep me posted on how it goes! -Coach M

Coach Mandy, I like your suggestion for a tempo trainer. I have this idea about my problem with breathing and I would like your take on my theory. I have watched your KZbin video on mastering the two beat kick probably a hundred times and I marvel at the glide you produce with each stroke. I have worked on that a lot and notice that as swimmers try to pick up speed they end up cutting that glide-per-stroke short, which I guess is a necessary evil. But I am running out of breath by using alternate side breathing on every third stroke and I wonder if I am holding that two beat kick glide too long? So my theory is that if I pick up my tempo (hence the tempo trainer) that I will get to my every third breathing stroke with less "running out of air" distress. What are your thoughts?

Steve Shaner that’s a very good question! So you are probably slowing down and adding tension because of this action so by speeding the tempo up will help you to relax your breath. What I see with most swimmers is they fixate too much on the two beat kick, they will slow down/stall and add tension in the legs. Ultimately this leads to tension in the shoulders/chest and will make you feel the sensation of feeling “out of breath”. It’s completely okay to have a relaxed flutter kick to let go of tension and reintroduce the 2BK later once you have established a calm breath. You are on the right track and don’t be afraid to experiment! -Coach M

Mandy...for sometime I used weights around my waist (2pds. at each side) during my training. I stopped using them because I felt they compromised my line and posture...but I am planning to use them again. Can you give me some advice?

@@SWIMVICE Well...before I started swim training I was a devoted diver and you use quiet some weight. So one day I just decided to use the weights (no tumble turns) hoping that would help me with my strength. I think it worked (and that is why I am planning on using them again)...but maybe its better a well designed strengthening program at the gym.
@SWIMVICE

Tomas Artinano okay got it. So knowing this I would say yes because here’s why. Nine times out of ten most men have lower profiles in the water this is because men are leaner in the legs so there’s a benefit to this. It is very easy to rotate in freestyle due to having a lower profile. This device would work better for someone with a higher profile. Adding weights to your profile will most likely increase your chances of over rotating and throwing your balance off. However, I can’t physically see how you use them but I would say it’s probably not necessary for you. Better to just train by relaxing your legs and shutting of your kick rather than add weight to your hips. -Coach M

Hello, I live in Brazil (where Import tariffs are very $$$) and I would like to a buy a watch (or, maybe, likely, a smart band) with cardiac sensor monitor or no need of a chest band. Can you suggest one? I am not a tri-atlethe looking for the best Garmin or similar to help me in competitions. I am just a weekend swimmer (my goal is to keep myself in some good shape between surf trips) and I just would like to buy a watch/band that shows my cardiac frequency (all metrics involved such as VO2, max, mix, etc...) and my cardio evolution given my swimming trainnings and is waterproof. Of course if I have more features such as distance, strokes, tempo, etc...I would love... Therefore, can you provide some suggestions? I would really appreciate since the reviews are everywhere but... And thank you for your videos. They are great! Mauro

Mauro Sirotsky Hi Marco! Thank you for your comments. I want to take the time to give you a solid answer on watch products because there are so many to chose from. However, what I use is my apple watch and the tempo trainer device in open water. The stroke count feature on the Garmin is not all that accurate its much better to physically count your strokes or set the tempo trainer to either mode 2 or 3. Vo2Max is not a necessary or important measurement for swimming. You just need to track your HR zones to see whether you are improving in regards to efficiency. Although garmins are great for GPS tracking to see exactly the path you take in open water and whether you really swim straight. But if you are in a pool the Apple watches are really impressive. I will update you with a more detailed answer for which garmin model would best suit you! -Coach Mandy

What I really need is a good watch (best with wrist heart hate monitor that could provide me all info to check my improvements. Since swimming is one of my activities I would like to measure this phase too. You are right... I do not need a GPS... Só many reviews and options.

@@arpex01 Okay so the chest straps are usually a bit annoying and easy to lose. However, you are far better off keeping things simple. My two best recommendations are: 1) The Apple Watch Series 4 : It has a cardiogram app which will track all heart monitoring. Its amazing! Here's a short cut to the product: amzn.to/2ErVPbv 2) Multi Sport Garmin Watch: If you want to go with a Garmin this is the one I would suggest- amzn.to/2ErSo4B I hope this helps! -Coach M

Awesome as always coach Mandy! Which one training would you recommend to improve endurance swimming?
@SWIMVICE

Run Guru Run for tempo it’s dependent on height and also your skill level. Triathletes or distance swimmers usually aim between 0:95-1:15 tempo. Test out each speed and find out what feels great for you! 👍🏼-Coach M

Run Guru Run no unfortunately :-/ but they are easy to use if you are counting your strokes. Also if you know the distance your swimming and tempo will help you find out what your pace is for what you are training for. I’ll be going into more detail in the future on this subject. Do you know what your average stroke count is in a pool? -Coach M
