Pond dye prevents sunlight penetrating the water allowing algae to grow. It’s the safest way to prevent algae.
@MrBsmurfy
@MrBsmurfy Жыл бұрын
Greetings from ireland. Each to our own but dye reminds me of a portaloo. I have a small 'organic pool' based on David pagan butler (fellow yt) designs. If algae is an issue then there is too much nutrient in the water. Eliminate runoff from nutrient rich fields and streams, avoid fish which feed on algae-eating micro-organisms, and try have at least 1/3 or more surface area with plants which take up the nutrients in the water. Can be 'weeded' once a year thereby removing nutrition from the pond and reducing what is subsequnetly available for algae. My pool is 6ft deep and completely clear to the bottom without any chemicals at all. It is much smaller, and fed from house roof which certainly is sufficient for my little thing (25x10mt) but yours is much larger so may not be applicable. Also, I noticed plenty of clay coming into your pond via the various pipes. Would some kind of small holding pond that these pipes feed into immediately before your actual pond help settle this out to prevent filling/silting up of the main pond? If roots running deep into the clay causing leakage was a concern then floating pond islands made of plants would both prevent damage and allow nutrient sequestration. Best of luck, fingers xxx all the leaks are sealed. Stumbled across your site as looking to create a nature pond based on a spring we have. While experience can be an expensive lesson, someone else's can be much cheaper!

Over at Conneaut Lake, the Bluegill will sometimes nibble . Two weeks ago they were doing it quite a bit. Some times during the year it seems to be more. Also in the spring when the water is colder they will hang out by our legs, rubbing on them. You might not stock your pond, you can still end up with fish. Ducks can carry fish eggs. Also it will be very likely that you will end up with frogs, and possibly turtles.

My god, that blue looks insanely artificial. I understand that some add a bit of blueing to make it look a bit more attractive, although I don't mind the green/grey hue natural water has. However, this pond almost looks like a chemical toilet, I would be scared to swim in it.

Be sure you get all your advice for free on youtube. You want to follow people who have built one pond ever and it was just a few years ago. That way you will be ensured you will have to pay someone like us ten years down the road. All kidding aside, take your advice from people who have created hundreds of ponds and lakes over a long term. Right, that's not usually free. There are many cases where what seems good will go bad.
@IndyFarmLife
@IndyFarmLife Жыл бұрын
I wholeheartedly agree with this comment. However, let me provide a little more back story about our pond, for those who aren't familiar. While I am the owner and helped in building our pond, I was certainly not the mastermind behind the design and execution. If you watch our videos, you will see that we hired our neighbor who has worked in the agriculture and construction industry for over 45 years. He has dug dozens of ponds, many of which were much more complex than ours. As noted, our pond is fully excavated, i.e. there is no dam/core trench to worry about. Adam knew our ponds were going to be very different, but wanted to connect with someone who had gone through such a build. He consulted way more people than myself. More importantly, his outreach turned into a great friendship...but I suppose one could argue that doesn't exactly come without a cost. haha
@BeautifuLakesStreamsBiologists

@@IndyFarmLife ahhh and there ya go! A person also needs to match their goals with the experience of their expert. For instance, if you want a pond or lake to last for generations, asking a person from the farrm bureau or the Natural Resource Conservation Service will not bring the results desires since their style ponds trap silt and you will then be looking for people like us who create waters to last lifetimes at least. Dredging is a very expensive exercise a couple decades after building the pond.
