Swimming Pool build Project finished, what I chose to filter, heat and treat the water

My swimming pool build has been completed and running for nearly a year, in this video I talk about my design of the pool and its building, how the water is filtered, heated and how the chemicals keep the water perfectly clear and clean
My plan was to create a pool that was economical to run and simple to operate with out the need for a service visit by an external contractor
I use an Inverter heat Pump to heat the water and this has been really good it has no problem even in the really cold weather to keep the pool to a perfect temperature
I have a decent pump and filter using glass media and this is also so good at filtering the water
The chemical dosing machine is probably my favourite piece of kit, it was an expensive consideration but, it is absolutely brilliant at keeping the levels exactly correct. More important to me is the fact the water is always safe and exactly balanced
The air handling is a Dehumidifying unit that also heats the room (care should be taken in the building design to size the unit correctly and in many cases a different type of ventilation system my be needed please take advice!)
I have LED underwater lights that are colour change and programmable these are by Certikin
I run the pool pump for 10 hours a day and the heat pump and the dosing unit only operate while the Pump is running all timed by simple timers
The Chlorine levels I keep at 1ppm
The PH always stays set to 7.4
The heat Pump is 19KW model
The pool volume is 28000 ltrs
The pool size is 6m long 4m wide and 1.2m deep
Here is a link to the supplier that helped me design and specify the kit that I needed to create the pool

Amazing, you’re a lucky guy but clearly you’ve worked for it so I take my hat off to you. Love a well researched and implemented project. If I won the lottery I’d ask you to come up to Scotland to build me my dream home 👍🏻

Interesting, did not know that maintaining a pool was that complicated (even if so well set up like here). Seems like pools are similar to boats in that it's better to have a good friend with one than to own one yourself.

Hey Robin, I’ve been binge watching the big build series on your channel and I just wanted to say how extremely inspiring you are, and to the carpentry community, your style combined with your years of experience is unmatchable and your apprentice is extremely fortunate to have you as a teacher! When I was an apprentice so many employers I worked with just didn’t care about the workmanship or passing on their knowledge, they just cared about making money which I believe is the wrong approach to a successful career. Thank you for all of the effort you put into your KZbin Channel!

I have been waiting for this vid. I live in the San Fernando Valley and I have serviced pools for 50 years. Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Toluca Lake etc I am retired now, but I built a little pool that satisfied all my needs and wants. 12x28, 6 foot deep with a small Jacuzzi in the shallow end. It’s outside so no need for all Robin’s AMAZING features. Indoor pools need all the stuff he mentioned. The humidity and the chlorine in the water will kill anything metal inside the structure, plus the chemical smell is miserable. He has systematically dealt with each issue in a first class way. From June to October I swim daily without any heating (I have a 250,000 BTU natural gas heater). In the cold months we heat the Jacuzzi two or three times a week. My pool is 3 feet above grade, so we have a love place to sit. 15 inch thick walls, 3 mats of rebar. Swimming and water is really great. Mine is much simpler but works

I love the science behind swimming pools! Our pool holds 26,000 litres; getting the pump flow rate and chemical balance right is a steep learning curve! Then the addition of the heat pump! I remember when I first installed it, I heated our outside pool to 37 degrees! When we got the electricity bill I quickly turned it down to a more "economical" 27 degrees. Your pool and garden room are next level! Well done!!!

Hi Robin, I really love your videos. I am a carpenter and have moved to the UK from NZ for my partner but I really miss the timber frame construction, especially the architectural stuff. Do you know where I can find some of that type of work in the UK? Currently I’m in London but really don’t like it here. Just want to work with timber again…
@ukconstruction
@ukconstruction 7 ай бұрын
Try reaching out the some of the larger timber frame producers as they are always trying to find people, they may be able to connect you with a Sub contract firm that carries out the work etc, hope that helps bro, welcome to the UK!!

Your pool looks great. Quick question, I'veoiften wondered why modern pools don't have insulated shells? Would it have been possible to line it with something like Kingspan and a pool liner on top? Or would the weight of the water be too heavy for the insulation?
@ukconstruction
@ukconstruction 7 ай бұрын
Hi Michael, my pool is insulated all round and even under the slab, this is a current building regulation requirement, from memory I have about 200 mm of insulation, the concrete shell acts as a heat store too so it makes it much more energy efficient
@michaeldibb
@michaeldibb 7 ай бұрын
@@ukconstruction Thanks for clarifying my mistake, Robin. I think I must have watched too many pool construction videos from the USA where I've never seen insulation used. Good to know.

Great work Robin, exactly the sort of thing I'd like attached to my house. Please if you don't mind me asking, how much roughly did the whole job cost building/foundations and pool set up not including land?
@ukconstruction
@ukconstruction 7 ай бұрын
Hi, I am not entirely sure exactly what it has set me back as I have been building this over several years, I would imaging that if I was trying to cost it as a project then it would be £250k plus

Is the humidity levels so high that a regular MVHR system would not work? That would extract moisture and combine the heat recovered into fresh air incoming.
@ukconstruction
@ukconstruction 7 ай бұрын
Yep the humidity generated by the pool water is much more than a typical dwelling that uses MVHR and my dehumidifier does recover the heat as does the fresh air fan

@ukconstruction

Hi Mark, I have not worked the cost out yet but I reckon it will be about 40 to 50 pounds per week at the higher energy prices currently this would be pool filtration, heating of the water and the dehumidifier/air heater and the fresh air fan

I have been in the business for over 36 years, worked many 7 day weeks never had any other interest like golf or sport!! I have also been careful buying property and adding value with blood sweat and tears for many years!! Being a carpenter is good money if you get the right work for the right clients but as craftsperson the sooner we do the work for ourselves as opposed to adding value to our clients property then we can grow our own wealth slowly
