This is actually the best video I've seen on describing the crawl technique, very simply put and easy to understand, most vids try and baffle you with science

Oh my god, thank you so much. I’m 21 years old and learning how to swim and I could not understand what I was doing with my arms. I thought that my arms were supposed to wind back and scoop, not reach and pull. Thank you so so much. Every time I tried to ask people, they were making it sound confusing.

Looks so simple! For me, the most problematic part is the moment when the elbow is supposed to go high when it's out of the water. I feel like I'm ballet dancing wth it, instead of swimming. CanNOT grasp that movement at all......

In order to make stroke improvement plz before swimming stand in water depth below ur shoulder .By keeping ur leg apart in standing position make ur face immerse in water and practice high elbow stroke with side breathing for 15 mins. followed by swimming to implement ur stroke.Remember the stroke has following parts to perform viz entry ,catch(just 15-20 cm below water not immerse more below),pull(till ur hand reaches ur side waist) ,push hardly until ur hand is straight 180 degree (from waist till u exit hand from water),Exit and recovery(in recovery move hand very slowly (note ur left other hand must glide until stroke hand again reaches entry)till again entry........recovery.Always keep ur body Relax no stiffness no stiffness.kicking is constant but again relax normal no fast fast kicking.Final but important when stroke reaches waist turn ur face for side breathing and return face back before hand exit for recovery but breath opening wide ur mouth comfortably and feel air Suction in throat.

Well don't do it then! I'm the same as you but worse and do everything wrong but can still duck under 15 secs for 25 metres freestyle.

Same. Some teachers put too much emphasis on the elbow going really high, thinking it will help you understand the movement, and this is confusing because it's not just about the elbow. Thanks to this video I can see now that what they mean is that you should completely pull your arm out of the water during the return. I like that this video makes it clear that you should "make sure your underarm is lifted out of the water during this motion." This is important, because if you can have your elbow up while keeping your underarm underwater, hence doing the movement wrong even if your elbow is up.

Thanks for this. My stroke is decent but when i turn to breathe i feel like im gasping for air and do not catch enough air till my stroke is ended and i have to breathe again quickly. Any drills just to practice breathing? Sometimes when i turn to breathe but body sinks a little.

As a beginner swimmer this is very useful for me to do when I practice. While I am terrible at breathing, I think having the arms in the proper form will make it easier. Thank you!
@KeithHiew
@KeithHiew 5 жыл бұрын
Joyce M-Greer the reach out with the arms should make your body tilt to one side. For example, if you’re reaching out with your right hand, your body should naturally tilt to the left and vice versa. This movement/tilting of your body is essential to reduce drag in your freestyle/crawl. To improve this even further, try learning the two-beat kick. This would give your crawl a rhythm and allow you to feel your body gliding through the water with every stroke.

Michael Phelps was usually swimming in either a 100 free or 200 free or the IM race. In a short event like the 50, 100 or 200, swimmers usually use the straight arm freestyle for more power. You May want to check out Katie Ledecky or Sun Yang because they are long distance swimmers, and this kind of “graceful”, gliding freestyle suits the longer distance better.

I use all different types of stroke. I swim for 90 minutes a day. It breaks the boredom to switch. But this looks the fastest and most efficient.

Freestyle means the swimmers can use any of the FINA approved strokes of fly, back, breast or crawl. But because the crawl is the fastest of all the strokes, everyone uses the crawl during the “freestyle”, hence the adoption of the name.
