Hello Folks, just a quick word from the BOILERMAN. Well done to Jake for posting the footage. The first film was taken in Summer 1981 with a borrowed VHS camera on a Crewe - York adex which I boarded at Stockport. The 40 was replaced at Carnforth by a kettle. I was seen off by my wife and 9 year old daughter.....you do the maths.....yes, her son has had 40 haulage at Bury.....see you soon behind a surviving Whistler, Mel. The Swineshead cameraman Barney is no longer with us, Stills man Mitch never photographed from the back of a pick up truck again. I never drove a Ford 2 litre P100 truck again....a restriction on my driving licence prevents it !!!!

Oh my lords, I remember seeing the truck and thinking, I'd love to see that video... only had to wait 36 years! RIP Barney, that is truly epic footage.

Remember the pick up truck too so glad I have this to reminice what a day I was 13 and out on my own, I'd never let my lad have done that but we're different times. I met up with a mate from Congleton called Chris nicknamed Herman. Not seen since them days hope you're well if you see this Chris.

Thanks Graeme and Carl......so pleased that the footage keeps giving pleasure. It was a well tuned event. Chinley North Junction box phoned Barney to tell him 181 had produced. He phoned me. I drove to the car hire depot which opened at 8 am to pick up the truck. As I was getting in it, I heard 181 go over the bridge. Then fast Ford to New Mills South Junction to pick up Barney after he had captured 181 and Mitch.....then a hectic chase to beat it to the car park next to the track. Barriers on the main road came down and the truck exited the car park with wheels spinning. There is more footage on one of the Whistling Giants dvds.........Cheers, Boilerman, PS we had done a dummy run with 060 on the first Skeggy of the season......silent cine from the mini window........had to be bettered.

The days when life was uncomplicated, fun and BR allowed rail enthusiasts to enjoy the hobby, I miss the days and seeing 40058 on the Manchester to Yarmouth at Sheffield back in 1983 which I joined at Peterborough and returned to Peterborough really brings those great memories back... 40013 on the Mossend to Parkeston that day too!!

Greetings Folks, the two seeing me off at the former Stockport (Edgeley) station in August 1981 are my Wife Kath, 28, and daughter Paula, 9. Eight years later I joined B.R., Paula following in 1990. We actually once worked a 304 together out of Altrincham.....just rostered, not fiddled. I was a Longsight driver, she was an Altrincham guard.

Always enjoyed the bit of track parallel with the A52 . Thanks to the absolute screamer that sat in the back of a pick up truck on the aforementioned road and has immortalised this forever more . #Absoluteriot

PS from BOILER.......the clip which starts around 7.20 is taken from the road bridge at Northenden Junction. Hertfordshire Railtours ...The Don & Fiddler....starting at Reading. This was the 15.35 Lime Street back to Reading. 1Z36 load 12. 40012 has taken the old Cheshire Lines route which ran to Stockport Tiviot Dale but turned right at Cheadle Heath for Sheffield. Guide Bridge driver Tommy Abbott drive from Huddersfield to Lime Street. There, he ran round and acquired a second woman, our friend Liz the nurse. She bellowed at Warrington. At Chinley, Tommy got relieved.....not by Liz, who was refused further mileage. My boss arrived in time, took a test view, went back to his car, and nearly missed it.

Jake, it's 60p these days to make a call from a public telephone - it's been a long time since it was 10p.

Ansolutely outrageous footage at the end. Nowadays you can get a fine from the Fun Police for eating an apple while driving, God knows what the sanctimonious effers would make of this lol!

PPS.....the date of The Don & Fiddler was Sat 20.10.1984....still the last 40 - hauled passenger train to take this route in that direction, ......40145 has worked the other way during the main line return years.
