Lots of stumps other than those of wood were cut by machines such as this.

As a summer job laborer I watched a man shatter his wrist crank starting an old gas engine. PLEASE take the time to look at the methods used in Model T crank starts, your body position is wrong, and never close you hand around the crank. When that Engine kicks back you will shatter your wrist and maybe every tooth as you fall forward into the crank.

I love it, but there is a reason they are not still around. Likely many hands and fingers remove accidentally.

This is true- being careful is an understatement. The automatic mill will be a big upgrade.

Does this mill cut a tapered shingle or flat?
@castironmachines
@castironmachines 2 жыл бұрын
Should be tapered, but the plate that sets the angle has to be tweaked so some turn out straight right now

@@castironmachines does the machine automatically adjust to cut tapers between each shingle?
@castironmachines
@castironmachines 2 жыл бұрын
@@KD-lq1sr This mill is all manual- you have to switch from pushing the top of the block against the back rest, to pushing the bottom against it, so it turns out tapered

@@castironmachines Great! It's kinda hard to see what all is going on when you're operating the mill. A more detailed explanation would be awesome, but not while it's running! We don't want you to lose an arm! 😉

Take the blade and collar off. Soak them in apple cider vinegar for 48 hours. The rust will wipe right off. After its cleaned and dry, wipe oil over all the parts. Reinstall the blade. Your hook angle on the tooth should be 22 degrees. Mind you, I recently had a saw carbide tipped and it came back with a 32 degree hook. I was concerned but, it is working. It should take nearly no effort to push the block through the saw. Get yourself a dial gauge and put 0.010" +0.003 - 0.000 (body of the saw to the tip) set into the tooth. One tooth one way, the next one the other. Then sharpen it. That tractor should play with the mill. The sawdust should come out long and stringy with little fines. Nor should there be smoke coming off the cut. ...and for the love of God, be careful using that style of machine... and the Lane for that matter. Make sure the carriage drive clutches are working right before even making an attempt. I had a Desjardin with mechanical clutches that didn't work right. I switch it to hydraulic. Before I bought the machine, a fellow lost an arm to it for that reason.

I appreciate all the tips. We sharpened the blade after this video and saw a huge improvement. The Lloyd still needs a drive pulley, a Lane may be on its way. Is your Desjardins a Canadian machine?
@noneofyourbusiness3553
@noneofyourbusiness3553 Жыл бұрын
@@castironmachines The Desjardin is a Canadian machine. The Forano I have might be Canadian. The 2 Drakes I have are and the Perkins is a US design, Canadian build... Yeah, I have five of them. What do you need for a drive pully?

@@noneofyourbusiness3553Nice collection. I have a 20" cast pulley with 2" bore to drive it, but it needs to be slotted for a 1/2" key. Hopefully will be completed this summer. There is an early Forano automatic mill at the Cumberland Pioneer Museum just east of Ottawa in their sawmill driven by a 40hp vertical Fairbanks Mores.
