Patrick , does a great job. Probably the best one .I teach swing volleys to all my students and all my HS doubles players. To know when to use the volley, swing volley and overheads is key. Up to shoulder level the volley, based on the height of the person. Also the position on the court (how close you are to the net) close to the net has to be a high to low swing volley and at serve line if is a lower ball can hit starting with racquet bellow the waist. I also teach poaching overheads and I implemented a doubles tactics where the lob is used v aggressively(a kick topspin lob) that pushes the back person a lot and the person at the net acts like a sweeper(:) backing up close to the T and tries to intercept the incoming lob/read patterns /exploit the weaknesses and move forward or sides to poach the lob. It takes some time to master it and are certain differences poaching to left or right as a lefty or righty. I taught my x HS boys team and we clinched tough matches bc of our tactics. I was so tired how most t pro's teach doubles teach to stay v close to the net and constantly on lobs ,they switch sides..also stepping in the volley is key if have one step or two, room for that. Also the reaction time is better and on v hard shots you can just block it easier, I teach also the overhead with variations/flat,slice and topspin/ that allows to create different spins and angles. Mostly for ladies, but works for boys too. Adults /USTA is v efficient. Some of my students hitting swing volleys at the net is just so pretty and efficient. You see a lady hitting it , leaves you speechless!!!

Great lesson. I actually remember Agassi as the first player - man or woman - to employ the swing volley in the mid-late 1980s. I also remember the commentators at the time not endorsing that technique.

How's he the greatest?He didnt get them to that level.It's other coaches groundwork....Those girls already knew that shot....A good coach always critic when there's nothing there fundamentally to fix.......He's not telling the girls nothing new here...The real coaches of those girls already went over those things.....I would like to see mouratoglou do a video with a complete beginner from scratch...

The swinging volley is a bad idea in most cases. Watch how many times the women (where it predominates) mess up the swinging volley. The men almost never do it. The women are avoiding the overhead on the high volley, and losing error margin when the ball is just clearing the net. More stupid from PM; if he had not hooked up with Serena (arguably the GOAT), he would still be a nobody. Also, note the swinging volley here is being practiced at the service line; THAT’S NO MAN’S LAND! In other words, exactly the wrong place to be hitting the ball. JHC!

Agree with @Osnosis. I'm a recreational player, but this is a stroke that is frequently muffed by most players certainly at the recreational level. Sure, the once or twice you get it, it looks good and the pro players can do it. But that doesn't make up for the half dozen times that you mis-hit the ball in a game situation at the recreational level.

When do we usually hit swing volley? Behind the service line or at the no man area? Is it better to use to handle lob? Where is the best area to practice it on the court? Standing at the service line as shown in the video? Thanks a lot
@ianbuick8946
@ianbuick8946 2 жыл бұрын
You got it. Starts practice at the service line. Use swing volley when you have a floater in no man land all the way to the net. Ball dictates the shot.

Great great instruction as usual. Thank you! What is the best footwork for Swing volley? And since it is called Volley, does it have the same grip while hitting the swing volley? I am using my forehand grip to do it at this moment. By the way, do you have any instruction about how to dip the ball?
@sergiosimbula
@sergiosimbula 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you use your normal forehand grip (either eastern or semi western). It's like a normal groundstroke but then from the air. Important to load your back leg en transfer weight forward!
@sergiosimbula

Dip by using topspin.
@sergiosimbula
@sergiosimbula 2 жыл бұрын
Also I don't know if Patrick says it but using a little shorter backswing than you normally have on the groundstrokes is very wise to do with the swing volleys.

@@Better_Call_Raul depends on the timing of the ball. If you are taking a fast incoming ball ok the rise, so right after the bounce than it is really hard to time so makes it harder to control. If you let it drop after the highest point, so on the fall than it loses speed and than the trajectory is parallel with the movement of the stroke, so that makes it a lot easier to time and thus to control. Taking a slow ball as a swing volley could thus indeed be easier than taking a very fast ball on the rise. It does takes practice of course or just a lot of talent ;)
@Better_Call_Raul

The coaching advice in the 1980s was to NOT swing at volleys. Why? Coaches said that it is too difficult to time and make clean contact. But I never understood this reasoning. At the baseline, we often deal with balls incoming at 45-60 mph and take a full swing on forehand groundstrokes. And we make clean contact at the baseline. On the typical swing volley we are looking to contact high above the shoulder. This means that these high balls will be relatively slow -- about the same speed as the baseline balls that we take a full groundstroke swing on. When we are closer to net, why is it any more difficult to swing volley a 45-60 mph shoulder height ball with a compact volley swing?

Maybe i'm wrong, anyway i feel the slinger is too close to the net, players don't have enough time to react since the ball leaves the machine.

Hehe.. the girl in the pink was just a bit off on the timing. She kept waiting for the ball to be in her view before even moving, but the other girl anticipated the fast timing of the ball and had no issues. It’s true the ball machine could’ve been set to a slower frequency or loop the ball at a higher angle though

Patrick has to learn physics. I say this because he keeps on saying spin the ball. Now for a short physics class, change the trajectory of your swing at contact with the ball. So in shot just continue hitting up. Low to high easy, never hit through the ball. If you think I'm wrong, watch any top pro hit this shot.
