I cannot count how many times I went charging down East Broadway with the notes of this entire album (CD) blowing through my head as I raced to reached me dealer... and so, each time I listen to this and now especially watch this... He uses this persona sometimes where he is mocking. He exagerates his lip movements, and tilts his head in an odd way. He is making fun of delusion, perhaps. Or maybe he is just lamenting the loss of Johanna to the madness. It is such a wonderful work of art, that is for certain. I also have visions of Johanna, but I am too old, so this must be the beginning, it can't be the end. BTW, my favorite uncle was a Frenchman. He was a wonderful man. @@kenbellchambers4577 that is really interesting, I never thought of it as that deep of an artist choice. Kinda just thought of it as a combination of just doing something interesting/whatever the hell he wanted to do along with being under the influence of many drugs. I never thought of it as a character that reflects the song. He did this when performing Just Like a Woman but I suppose those exaggerations and characteristics of slowly slipping away could work there too (as with the majority of Blonde on Blonde now that I think about it). In a sense. it has very little to do with his nationality. He does have the "advantage" of being an American, growing up speaking American English. Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet? We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it Lights flicker from the opposite loft In this room the heat pipes just cough The country music station plays soft But there's nothing, really nothing to turn off Just Louise and her lover so entwined And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind In the empty lot where the ladies play blindman's bluff with the key chain And the all-night girls they whisper of escapades out on the "D" train We can hear the night watchman click his flashlight Ask himself if it's him or them that's insane Louise, she's all right, she's just near She's delicate and seems like the mirror But she just makes it all too concise and too clear That Johanna's not here The ghost of 'lectricity howls in the bones of her face Where these visions of Johanna have now taken my place Now, little boy lost, he takes himself so seriously He brags of his misery, he likes to live dangerously And when bringing her name up He speaks of a farewell kiss to me He's sure got a lotta gall to be so useless and all Muttering small talk at the wall while I'm in the hall How can I explain? It's so hard to get on And these visions of Johanna, they kept me up past the dawn Inside the museums, infinity goes up on trial Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues You can tell by the way she smiles See the primitive wallflower freeze When the jelly-faced women all sneeze Hear the one with the mustache say, "Jeez, I can't find my knees" Oh, jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule But these visions of Johanna, they make it all seem so cruel The peddler now speaks to the countess who's pretending to care for him Sayin', "Name me someone that's not a parasite and I'll go out and say a prayer for him" But like Louise always says "Ya can't look at much, can ya man?" As she, herself, prepares for him And Madonna, she still has not showed We see this empty cage now corrode Where her cape of the stage once had flowed The fiddler, he now steps to the road He writes ev'rything's been returned which was owed On the back of the fish truck that loads While my conscience explodes The harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain

What do you guys think this song is about? I've looked a little bit into it and think the following. There are three characters in this song: Bob, Johanna, and Louise. Bob had a long time girlfriend and fellow musician named Joan Baez which I think is Johanna in this story. At the time he is writing this he was dating or married (not sure) his first wife Sara, which I think in this story is Louise. Now read these lyrics: "in't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet? We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it" Dylan is trying to go through the night but his thoughts are overcoming him and being loud and he's trying to deny them. "Just Louise and her lover so entwined And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind" Its him and Sarah and they are together (entwined) yet thoughts of Joan Baez still enter his mind while he's with Sarah. The rest of the song is very poetic and beautiful but up for interoperation. But I think him trying to overcome the thoughts of what he had Joan Baez while still being with Sarah are a prominent theme in this song
@UniversalGod-yo3qr Жыл бұрын
"as she herself prepares for him"
@njsongwriter4 күн бұрын
So you think Johanna is Joan Baez. Sorry. I don't want to burst your bubble but this song was originally going to be named "Freeze Out" or "Seems Like a Freeze Out". Dylan was a womanizer and yes you are correct that Dylan was either dating or was married to Sara at this time. Also at this time Dylan had been making advances toward his personal secretary. She wanted no part of it because she was on good terms with Sara and thus she resisted his advances. Dylan came into his office the morning after he wrote this song and comes up behind his secretary and whispers in her ear, "I wrote a song for you". The characters in the song are fictitious except for Johanna and himself. Johanna was the name of Dylan's first personal secretary. That's why the song was originally going to be called "Freeze Out" because she kept giving him the cold shoulder treatment... His visions of Johanna kept him up past the dawn... either past the dawn to literally finish writing the song or it was simply a message to Johanna telling her that he couldn't get her off his mind. But don't think that there is a hidden meaning behind every single line in the song. Often times a songwriter simply inserts phrases and words simply for the sake of the poetry and making it rhyme. I'm not saying anymore because Johanna, I'm sure, would not appreciate it. So her location and her last name will not be revealed.

This song, as released on the "Blonde on Blonde" double album, is just as beautiful but far more haunting with the addition of electric organ and electric guitar, reaching a crescendo at the end in which all else disappears, and he is left with only the visions of Johanna which have totally consumed him by song's end. Put on headphones and listen, in the dark, to the album version of this song, The way he is consumed by the visions reminds me of the building crescendo in The Doors' recording of "The End". I first heard Visions of Johanna when the album was released in 1966. The song's impact has not diminished over the years.

I don't believe that anyone can actually come up with poetry like this. It's just beyond a mortal stream of consciousness. Explain me this, how can anybody write, " In the museum, infinity goes up on trial/and voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while/ and Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues you could tell from the way she smiles"

Best of the live versions I've heard of this song. So much emotion in his voice. No need to watch....better to just listen, at least for me.

Even though I am 62, I never heard this song until I was in my 50's. It reminds me of the way things used to be in several ways. Just listening to Bob describe the game tells so much and the heaters bring back memories of things that disappeared so quickly I didn't even notice at the time.

Is it a coincidence that so much of the footage of Dylan around this time is super ethereal & kind of surreal? I'm a huge music nerd so watch a ton of musicians from back in the day & none have the kind of footage the Pennebaker captured around this time. Absolutely love it

Finally SWINGIN' PIG ... My extensive collection would not make sense without the bootlegs of the Swingin' Pig Records ... versions like this one made me fall in love with the Dylanian universe when i was little more than a teenager . I hope you can keep sharing these audiovisuals gems . How you say on vinyl coverart bootlegs COLLECT 'EM ALL .
@SwinginPig5 жыл бұрын
You’re the first person to get the reference! I got into boots a while ago and never looked back. Some of my earlier videos are from TMOQ records, including “Farewell,” and “Masters Of War (debut).” The crackle from the vinyl is beautiful.
@blackcrow70495 жыл бұрын
How could i forget about SWINGIN' PIG RECORDS and his bootlegs . Now imagine a group of teenagers , crazy for all about the music in a small town in Spain many years ago , searching and searching through the records stores and street markets to get that LP that nobody else had . That was pure magic . There was a small music store that had all the music separated by labels rock , pop , blues , etc. and in the background it hada whole section with famous logo of the Swingin' Pig Records that caracterized it. Those vinyls were unique . Some friend still jokes with that , when Dylan started with his official bootleg series he said '' hey , look , Robert finally decided to buy a pig record '' . Today all that magic has been lost in part , internet offers everything at one click , but the real magic of sharing, searching , that has been lost . That's why today when i saw this video i was happy and suddenly i was 15 years old again . Thanks for all that .
