How BAD Is Marvin Bagley Actually?

Marvin Bagley was not so long ago one of the best highschool talents in history. After creating some of the greatest hoop tapes online, dominating the college level, and getting drafted before Luka Doncic, why is Marvin Bagley now seemingly forgotten about?

He’s 100% gotten worse what do you mean? lol. Have you watched any of his games with the pistons? If he doesn’t get more touches than Cade he just straight checks out, his defensive abilities, instincts and effort are always non existent. This dude is a walking waste of space who should have been cut a LONG time ago. Not resigned for 13 mill a year to be a god awful back up. But what should we expect with a dipshit ass gm in Troy weaver. Bottom line bagley sucks and has gotten worse every single year

The similiarity between Bagley and Wiseman is almost uncanny. Both 2nd picks in the draft who just when they were playing well got derailed by injuries in their rookie season. Both are low basketball IQ bastketball players with elite athleticism that should have been better defensive players. And now they are both playing for Detroit after the teams that drafted them finally gave up on them. Sometimes the universe has a wicked sense of humor.

I think the way the US system works is terrible for talent development, only good for marketing kids as superstars from a very young age. I swear if bagley and wiseman played in Europe they would be way smarter players. If you are more athletic than other players of your age it’s very easy to just rely on your athleticism and not develop any sort of basketball iq or good habits. In Europe talented young players routinely play against much older competition, which keeps their ego in check and forces them to develop as basketball players. Bagley had just never experienced not being the best player on his team until reaching the nba, and then he just hits a wall and doesn’t know what to do because he has never experienced this before. This is why I knew luka was going to be better than everybody else in the draft: he was an 18 year old winning euro league mvp against professional basketball players in the second best league in the world, not college

This video details how his fall was almost predetermined. He was THE guy from age 13. There are maybe 4 or 5 of them at NBA level and Bagley's style of play is a bit of a weird fit in today's NBA because he's not strong enough to play the 5, he can't stretch the floor to play the 4, he's a black hole on offense and he's horrendous on defense. Then there's the NBA schedule and injuries. At this point his best bet is to be a budget Obi Toppin if he wants to stick around. If a big isn't elite at something to build his game around he's more than likely going to be a bust.

But his lack of success is due more to the franchises he's landed on, NOT his game. He just went 10/12 it's not his fault Pistons on a 25 game losing streak. A lot of people like to trash the Kings for drafting Bagley over Luka. Obviously in hindsight, it will be remembered as one of the worst draft decisions in history, but I'm glad you pointed out that, at the time, this move made a lot of sense for Sacramento. If you think about it, this was their first attempt at creating the Sabonis/Fox duo that eventually led them to the 3rd seed. This was the safe and seemingly correct choice at the time. But this was all ruined due to injury, lack of basketball IQ, and what seemed like a unwillingness to work on his flaws.

I was at G1 Center for the draft party, talked with a good amount of other fans and we all agreed that Bagley was unbelievably athletic but the dude was also unbelievably one dimensional and was more of a project than a sure thing if you watched him in college, the scouts were comparing him to KG & Amar'e Stoudemire. The Kings were also the laughing stock of the west at the time with how many coaching changes and front office changes in the wake of new ownership in the span of 5 years. I believe Bagley was the only top prospect that actually worked out for the Kings during the draft process and Luka only met Vlade but in Europe, everyone else like JJJ declined a workout with the Kings.

If he had a defensive minded coach that could actually help him to learn he would become(not a good) but a serviceable defender. He still makes a positive impact on the offensive end with ok 3 pt shooting, but more so his ability to grab offensive rebounds. Id assume he doesn't have much of, if any ego left, so I really think he can become a very good role player in the league as long as he is willing to accept that role.

Preface saying I'm a Kings fan and grew up in Sacramento. To this day I get what they were trying to do by drafting Bagley ... Potential pick and role with Fox and a big man that could run with him on fast breaks. Also it's not like Bagley was a reach he was slated to be a top 3 pick in all mock drafts. There are two things that I believe effected his development which were touched in here ... First the obvious one injuries. The second was going with Walton as a couch. I never liked the move and even less with the offensive "System" Walton employed. You had one of the fastest guards in the NBA with a athletic big man and you slow the pace down ... Yeah recipe for disaster. Also Walton packed the ability to develop players. Bagley in my eyes is a result of the current system when I comes to basketball, the lack of coaching fundamentals...a large percentage of coaches from highschool to college seem like they don't take the time to teach a player the basics when they are extremely athletic, how many players have we seen come in ultra athletic but lacking the basic skills they should of established early in their play.

All facts fam not a king's fan but my brother spent time in Sacramento and became a fan and I said from the beginning that hiring Walton was a terrible move and yes skill development is a huge issue in the youth game here today in the states so many of these players are just focused on the flashy stuff that will generate highlights and neglect the fundamentals but it's fundamentals that keep you in the league

I been watching a lot of your videos on and I keep wondering how this could happen again and again to top NBA prospects? From college on, as a talented player, don't you have an army of training and coaching staff shadowing your every turn and move? Is it first and foremost not the staff's fault to mess up a talent? If you manage to get into the NBA, you're one of the best and if your mind set is right, staff around should be able to mend gaming deficiencies, I guess…

When you think about it, as ridiculous as the Kings have been as a franchise, the one thing they have had going all the way back to the Divac playing days was big men with saavy and high passing IQs. Divac, Webber, Miller, Cousins, and now Sabonis. And then in the middle of that, they went and drafted the anti of all that. An athlete with no BB IQ at all. And it worked out about how you might expect. Taking this guy over Luka, Trae, and Shai was the unforgiveable sin though. Then again, I remember them once taking Thomas Robinson over Lillard, and Fredette over Klay and Kawhi, so drafting is a huge part of why they just stayed bad forever for so long.

NBA scouts thought Bagley was a TOP 3 Rookie player . They also thought Keegan Murray was like a ehh and Jayden Ivey was the next Ja Morant . That was going put the Pistons into the playoffs . Fast forward a year Pistons now hold the nba record for the longest losing streak and even have Bagley and Jayden Ivey . On top of that they bashed Sacramento the entire time and it took them till the end of the year to actually start acknowledging them a little bit .

When I saw him play La Lumiere in high school against Brian Bowen, Jaren Jackson Jr, and Jordan Poole (guys who have all made it to the league), there was no way that Bagley wasn’t the best player. Crazy how their careers turned out with only two of them panning out at the NBA level.

I'm from Sacramento so I'm beyond familiar with his story. He's a complete bust but he's made over 50 million and gets to live out his dream. He's deleted all his social media for his own sanity but he's made it and accomplished something 0.1% of the population never will. Props to him.

Sometimes it feels like some guys goal was to get drafted. He had the physical makeup to be the next Chris Bosh. Real shame. To be fair to him, he was drafted to an organization that has probably the worst history of developing their young talent. Sacramento draft picks never get developed past the player they came in as. Tyreke Evans came in a borderline All-Star and never got past that. Teams learned how to guard him and the team never helped him get better. I think thats the case with Fox. Hes worked himself past that peak, but I have almost no doubt the organization did little to develop him properly. Think about how long Sacramento has been in the lottery, and think about how many players out of all those top picks have become anything worth more than a few years in the league. Cousins, Fox and thats about it. Every one of their picks that did succeed did it after their tenure in Sacramento. Whiteside, Thomas....hell you could go back to guys like Turkoglu, Gerald Wallace and see there was a trend. Much more times than not, a player who gets drafted to Sacramento either sinks till they dump him, or when they are dumped are saved by another organization only with a few years of development wasted. The worst thing you can do as a NBA player is get drafted by Sacramento. Obviously, it falls on the players too. But when that many draft picks miss, and that many players leave to mould out NBA careers on different teams, you have to look at the common factor....Sacramento is a graveyard of NBA talent wasted. I think other organizations are like that too. Charlotte, the Warriors before they got bought out and changed everything about their organization did they see some actual consistent development out of their top picks (except the trend seems to be working its way back with Wiseman and Kuminga), I think New York fits that lack of development trend and others. The best places to go are obviously San Antonio, OKC, I think Toronto is on the fringes of that list, and Miami. I think if youre talented Boston is a great spot too. If youre not talented from the jump though, Boston tends to not play its younger players, regardless of whoes coaching them. You gotta work hard to make the roster in Boston, but that might be because theyve spent the better part of almost 2 decades now competing at playoff levels. Regardless, Sacramento sucks. If youre an NBA prospect, avoid being drafted there, they ruin NBA careers imo.

Man went from the Sacramento Kings before they got good to the Detroit Pistons right after they were mostly just mediocre for the 2010s. I know it actually is partially his fault but damn that’s not a great draw even as a Kings fan I can admit we didn’t give him much of a chance at a star role after his injury.
