Amazing it worked and started right up after 2 years of sitting and plenty of tinkering. I would have never figured this out and almost gave up. It was hiding in a beautiful clean bowl and bowl gasket. Had to move the gasket and discovered the same situation. You're a hero!

Yes,my old workshop manager had a problem with a brand new Ryobi line trimmer where he was there all day trying to figure out why it wouldn't start. He replaced all the carburettor gaskets & even the carburettor but there was a fault that wasn't obvious - the insulation spacer between the carburettor & the cylinder was sucking air in past the gasket which was damaged by Ryobi themselves. This was on a brand new Ryobi line trimmer & it had my manager stumped so I had a look at it & I ordered a new carburettor insulator to cylinder gasket,the engine started up straight away once I fitted the new gasket !

Juat an fyi for all those really small holes we who work on these small engines find regularly...buy a set of guitar strings. 1. You get 6,7 or 8 different sizes in a pack (and can choose the largest to smallest guage). 2. They bend aeound corners somewhat easily and can be intentionally bent for a specific purpose. 3. The larger guages are a wrapped wire so they can be used like a file with round corners (wont go cutting through aluminum or plastic but will remove grime and solids stuck to walls of internal plumbing. For 7 bucks they really come in handy. They'll even hold or hang pieces out of the way if need be. So many uses!

I might have to consider that. thank you Brett Meldahl.

Great job! I would have thought it was the diaphragm - sometimes they dry out. Had that problem with a Remington 22" Walk behind trimmer, similar to yours. Was causing lack of priming and carb would not pull gas

I love you more than family! Really, a air leak around the bowl gasket? Why each time you removed the bowl it was nearly dry? I would have guessed/diagnosed plugged fuel line or bad seat on the float. Not enough fuel entering. Argh! Thanks for the video brother.👍

@HomeGaragechannel6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Salty Rebel for the comment I appreciate it. Yes it definitely seems to be running lean at first. I would check the carb bowl gasket. They usually harden and don't seal allowing air to leak into the carb.

@@HomeGaragechannel Okay thanks, btw your video helped me out a lot, Ive cleaned lots of carburetors but never really thought of the gasket allowing air to get in, just thought of the gasket as something that prevented gas from leaking. Now i know for the future replace the gaskets!!!!

I just finished two of these that had sat out for years, along with a large water pump, a generator and 5 lawnmowers on an old farm. Im no expert but they all start on 2nd pull if not the 1st. So, again, im no expert but ive learned a lot the last few months and woukd love to share and LIKELY learn more from having some back and forth with others trying to avoid "the shop" and the $ lost. So maybe we can all put our heads together and help each other out. Be well everyone.

@@brettmeldahl4456 Quick question - I have one of these, and it'll run for a few minutes then die - or will start easily enough but put any pressure on it (i.e. try to cut down weeds/grass) it will bog down and die. Is this a carb issue and if so - how do I find what parts to buy?

I had a repairman take off the engine brake/ kill switch and assembly off, why would he do that and should i put it all back on? I wanted to start using it after 2 years and it only starts if I add starting fluid in the carb, This hasn't got anything to do with the kill switch being taken off. It ran before without it.

I have a similar problem. I replaced the carb, and the mag. Reset the gap, new spark plug, and still it only runs about an hour and then stops. Sounds like it runs out of gas but plenty in tank and not overheated. I am at a loss and ready to scrap it.
@HomeGaragechannel5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Brad Johnson for the comment. It sounds like the gas cap is at fault. It's supposed allow air into the fuel tank as the fuel leaves to go to the carb. If replacing the fuel cap is an option try that. Otherwise you can leave the fuel cap loose and it should solve your problem.
