Very well done! Love those sections of the Via Alpina having hiked them at different times. To do them all at once is a good workout! Cheers!

Thanks Alphihiker. I really enjoyed this trail and confess that I do have an eye on the red trail. But, time, cost physical ability? So many things to consider.

@@morgs4mountains just out of curiosity i am like you and dont really like to plan to much was there any times you thought you were struggling to either find a wild amp spot or a campsite / accommodation as in previous hikes ive had a few instances where ive had to walk a lot further than i had wanted to to find something 😉 atb daz

This particular route went through some very pretty scenery and was not as wild as I had thought it might. Consequently, when walking through some areas, it was clear that it was going to be difficult to camp wild unless I pitched really late. I found that feurstelles were good places to camp and I also asked farmers if I could camp on their land. I can speak German so was comfortable explaining that I was walking through the country and that it would only be for one night. The farmers that I spoke to were incredibly kind and very willing to help me. Above 2000m there were few issues and it was always easy to find a place to put the tent down. I only stayed in one matratzenlager near Altdorf but I learned from a Dutch couple that they found a campsite in Altdorf that is not featured anywhere on the Internet. Finally, wild camping is tolerated above the treeline as long as you're not in a shutzgebiet (protected area) although if you pitched late, left early with leave no trace principles, I don't think you'd encounter any issues.

Hi Iain. The walk took me 16 days in the end and I used the Cicerone Guide throughout. I found that on the whole it was a pretty good guide when used in conjunction with the signage on the ground. I was completely self sufficient for electricity and I used my Anker 21w solar charger to power my phone in the evenings and my Anker 10,000 Mh battery pack on two occasions during the day. That was enough to see me walk through Switzerland without having to plug in anywhere. I've done a review of my solar charger and it can be seen here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZ6mpGyrrJufqJI Good luck when you walk the route. You won't be disappointed.

hi.. did your tent suit the this mountain route or woukd you took another... am looking for a tent to do this thinking the tarptent aeon Li , also which pegs you used, thanks.. oh from 1 to 10 how hard was it ..👍 the roure
@morgs4mountains2 жыл бұрын
I think that the Tarptent Notch Li is as perfect a backpacking tent that there is. Lightweight, deals well with wind and has a small footprint so can be pitched in many places that other tents can't. It worked really well on this trip and I recommend it. I always use MSR Groundhog stakes.

Hi Morgs, really enjoyed all three parts of the Via Alpina series it looked tough but must be a great feeling knowing that you’ve done it? Me and my brother are going to Switzerland in June for 5 days and looking to do a four day hike and three night wild camp - can you recommend parts of this trip where this would be possible? We like to start from Sargans on the Via Alpina and hike for four days and maybe end up in a town to get the train back to Zurich? Any info would be greatly appreciated ATB Mark & Simon 👍👌

Hi Mark and Simon. Just picked up your message. Will reply in detail tomorrow once I've given some thought to your plans from Sargans. Thanks for commenting on the series.

The first thing is to note that your fitness levels might differ from mine. You might be able to either do more than me or less. So it will be hard for me to definitively give you an itinerary that I know you are capable of walking. My 2nd day on my route was stupidly hard but that was kind of forced upon me by the lack of wild camping opportunities between Elm and Oberebs. You say that you want to start at Sargans. I enjoyed the first 3 days' scenery very much as the mountains felt quite wild and certainly more so than later in the route. The beauty of the mountains increased as I walked west, but the feeling was of a manicured country as opposed to a feeling of wilderness. The walk from Sargans to Weisstannen was pretty straightforward despite the steep pull from Sargans. I started after lunch and made it to Weisstannen by early evening. There were very few places to pitch but on approaching the village I did note some stealth opportunities behind a few field barns. If you have an early start AND the legs, you could get past Weisstannen and up towards Foo Pass. Once above Foo Alp I saw loads of places to pitch a tent. If you stay close to Weisstannen, your next obvious stop would be Elm. Here is a free campsite in the woods about a mile before the village. You'd also have wild camping opportunities on the way up to Richetlipass as there is a wonderful bowl east of it called Wichlenmatt. There is an Alp building here and the farmer was very friendly. If you spoke to him I feel certain he'd let you camp on his land. The next place to camp easily after Linthal is by the river about a mile before Urnerboden and just after a gravel works. It's free and is an unofficial campspot. You'll see mobile homes here and there is a decent spot to camp close to done woods right next to the river. After Urnerboden the only possibility of any further camping would be the eastern side of the Klausenpass. There is absolutely nothing after Klausenpass until Altdorf. So based on your request, I'd suggest Sargans to Altdorf which according to my guidebook should be 5 days. I did it in 4 days but pushed myself very hard on day 2. If I can help with any further information please don't hesitate to ask. There are other sections that I enjoyed very much.

@@morgs4mountains thank you very much for all that info - and thanks for taking the time to do an in depth reply, I will take all this on board 👍 funnily enough I was looking at Elm only yesterday on the hiking Switzerland app and from the pictures there does seem to be places to camp so I’m going to look into that in more depth, we will just have to work out how to get there and back to Zurich but we have got 5 months to prepare so should be fine 👍 thanks again Mark & Simon..
