It's a fine walk Dave and very enjoyable. I did it yesterday (Feb 6th) on a cold bright sunshine day. There was still a good flow coming over the falls & your info along the route made my walk that much more enjoyable. On the climb out of Tintern I had to limbo (lol) under a few fallen trees but once on the level ground at the top all was easy going. I can imagine this walk with Spring greens or Autumn colours would enhance an already enjoyable walk. We encountered a few people on the walk but mostly it was a quiet stroll. Thanks once again for providing the gpx, I used it with os mapping and it was much appreciated. atb Al

I'm so pleased that you've done this walk Al. Even more pleased that the GPX file worked for you and importantly that you enjoyed the walk through the woods. Hopefully it took you to some new places. Yes, I did wonder about whether to include the route due to the blow downs, but concluded they'll soon be gone and the route will have longevity. Thanks so much for following in my footsteps and for writing such a positive review.

Great video Dave. People in the UK don't know how lucky they are having all of those rights of way to explore, right in their doorsteps (I write this from Ireland). By the way from time to time I use the Hiiker app that you recommend. It's a bit quirky - not sure I've fully mastered it yet. But it's relatively inexpensive (five year Pro+ subscription currently on offer at EUR 159.99) and has a good range of maps. It's also the only app I know that has the Irish "East-West" maps , which are the closest equivalent to the OS 1:25k Explorer maps.

Great stuff Dave... I recognise bits of the walk as I have parked at Whitestone & stood at the bench then walked to the falls. A lovely lot of water there on your visit - I have been twice but never had anything like this. Love the local historical notes you have provided for this walk and I think I will download this and persuade my Newport friend to come & join me on it. Will let you know how we get on. Thanks again. It's a new idea I have had Alan. A series of up to 10 mile walks in different locations in South Wales to encourage people to get out and explore. Fingers crossed I can inspire a few people. I do hope you enjoy the walk if and when you get out.

I bought a pair on offer last year, very comfy. The only issue is that I got slight lace bite. I fixed that by tightening the eyelets, but leaving the hooks relatively loose, and now they are like gloves. 900 miles is not far. My previous Craghopper Treks lasted over 1,000 miles on roads and paths before splitting. The soles were fine. Where the Scarpa beats the Craghoppers is the design. The Craghooper laces were always coming undone, and doing them up was very hard because the hooks are too close together. The Scarpa laces are easy to do up as the hooks are well spaced, and the laces stay done up. Also the Craghoopers had material round the ankle outsides, which got muddy and could not be cleaned. I’m not sure it’s worth buying posh boots from a durability point of view, I paid £70 for the Craghoppers, and I paid £110 for the Scarpa. I will probably buy Scarpa again even if they only last one year i.e. 1,000 miles because they are designed better, and I just like them!

Thanks for your video. The valleys look so peaceful and beautiful. My great great grandfather at 21 left his family farm in the Valley in 1864 and emigrated to Australia. They named a family house in my home town "Rhondda" so I guess he thought fondly of his homeland and undoubtedly missed the area as well as his family.

Ah the fickle UK weather. I guess I hit the same yellow weather warning as you. Shame you did not get some better days. I have only been to Dartmoor once, to do a mountain marathon, and I didn't see anything for two days. Looks an interesting area with some great wild camping spots by the tors. Thanks for taking us along. Pain au Chocolat for breakfast ? That's nearly as bad as Dave Goodman taking his pajamas. Oh, and I remember you asking what I filmed on. GoPro10. In my defence, it was one of those piddly little ones from Aldi, but decadent in a tent nonetheless. Thanks for info re GoPro10. I was more interested in how you process on the trail. Assuming that you transfer data from SD card to your phone and then use App to process? I am going to treat myself later this year to a GoPro as the wind issues on the phone are almost impossible to manage. Assuming you've finished the CW now? I check every day to see whether you've uploaded!

I loved your stories in this final episode. Congratulations on all those 2000 ft hills in England and wales that’s an achievement. You’re certainly a keen hiker and an inspiration Dave. Although I have been over the Glyders many times the weather for us last year was very bad and the terrain up there was extremely confusing and very slippery, we could not get on the cantilever stone. 16:16 Ignore the cholesterol in the food you eat; dietary cholesterol has ZERO influence on blood levels. It's yet another of many food myths that have no basis in truth or science. As for a fried breakfast (the traditional "Full English" etc.), it has been proven, time and again, to be just about the healthiest start to the day you can have. If you pile in the carbs (porridge, cereal, bread etc.) your energy levels will be all over the place, with insulin/sugar spikes and crashes. Keep the protein high, and you'll feel (and do) much better...trust me! I'm 57, I have a blended 5-egg shake (in 500ml of milk) for breakfast, then do some work (I work from home), then go to the gym...5 times a week...then, I have a steak mid-afternoon, not long after the gym. I may have some SMALL carb snacks a little later, then another 5-egg shake in the evening. I have never eaten so few carbs, and so much protein, in my life...and my weights in the gym are as high (or higher) than they were in my 20s or 30s, my recovery is faster & more complete than ever (I have never ached so little, the day after a hard workout), and my energy levels are constant all day. I never felt this good before. I also walk several miles, maybe twice a week (usually over the Gower). So, if it works for me, at 57, there must be something to it!
@morgs4mountains4 ай бұрын
So interesting and at odds with what others say. I did note the breakfast that you have and I can absolutely see the benefit of that. Everything in moderation is what they say but you're clearly reaping the benefits of your scientific understanding on the benefits of protein. I'll read more on this subject. Thanks so much for the detailed comment.

Thanks so much Catherine. I'm so pleased that you're following the journey and that it's enjoyable for you too.
