A technical question - are most of them using only one chain ring in the front? From what I understand that would limit them on the "fast" gear ratios on flat sections, no?

one chainring means that it have less weight, less cable,shifters etc..

@@FlikenGames I was looking at this graph: reviews.mtbr.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Gearing-Chart1.jpg My thinking was that the two single chain ring options on the left fall quite short of what one would want during the race, but they are both with 30 tooth chain ring - I guess pro racers could use 32/34 ones instead (?)

@@LeelooMinai Usually they have a 36 chain ring (sometimes 34) and cassettes starting at 9 or 10. That's way enough to get to 35km/h without spinning the legs like a track cyclist

I started at age 34 to do Mountain Bike. First by lanes and then by trails. I fell many times, but the trick is to get up and continue to remove fears. Now I'm 36.

I began racing xc mountain bikes as a 57 year old in north Thailand. After a few years and lots of training ( about 300 km a week) I was in the top three in the 60+ A age group. There are different age groups and ability levels. (C is for beginning level racers, B is for intermediate level racers, and A is for experienced and fastest age group) so its a pretty fair type of competition. LOTS of fun and very friendly people everywhere I have been racing.
