Rainbow Swiss Chard Seeds: amzn.to/3aOKyjm
It is best to start Swiss Chard in a seed starting tray instead of direct seeding them. You want to ensure that you plant the swiss chard in a container that has some organic material such as compost or other fertilizer amendments.
Swiss chard requires full sun, so ensure you place it is a spot that gets at least 5-6 hours of sunlight. It does tolerate some shade but may not grow as fast.
It is recommended to have some bone meal in the soil as it is full of phosphorus which is good for the Swiss Chard. You can follow the fertilization once every 3 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer, but it is not necessary.
We go over some other tips such as container requirement, soil mixture ratios, and general watering and care guidelines.

Thank you so much for this helpful video. I love how you creatively use edible gardening as a part of your landscaping in the front of your house. I have a newbie container/terrace gardening question: I have too many chard plants growing in one 10 gallon container. Should I try to replant a few in a second container or take out the weak ones. I hate losing any plants but realize I should have planted fewer seedlings in the first place. Thank you!

Thank you for the video. I don't have too much space. Can I grow then in smaller container, like two plants per container instead of three o four? I have 5 quart containers. Thank you.

2 plants would work for that container size. The roots don't go down too deep for that plant.

Real beginner question here: could I plant Swiss chard seedlings in the same 5 gallon container I'm planting a small cherry tomato plant ? (Trying to conserve soil/ space on my apartment balcony), thanks.

Yes, you can do that..just be aware that you will need to ensure you water it more regularly.

It would work if the container is big enough because both tomatoes and chard take up a lot of space. I like to plant basil all around my tomatoes. They go well together. It's great to save space not only on the balcony but also in the garden.

Update: I did it, it was doable, they're both growing! But that said, I'd pass on doing it again next time, as you're right, it's better to give each of the plants more room to spread out. (I was trying to be a bit too frugal, Lol.) Loving this gardening thing... ...thanks everyone for the help! xxx

@@seaglass8940 I'm glad it worked! Did you know you can harvest the outer leaves of your chard plants and they will keep growing from the middle which means you can harvest every other week. But this is only true for the 'leaf type' of chard, not the 'stem type'. I'm sorry I don't know the English terms for that, if I find out, I'll let you know... I prefer the 'leaf type' chard because of that reason and because it's hardy. In spring it will keep growing and you're able to harvest from the same plant again. It you let it bloom, you can harvest the seeds so you never need to buy the seeds again. Have a great day!
