I learned after yrs of going through ferro rods that to preserve them in a SHTF situation EOTWAWKI is to learn to use char cloth or char punkwood, all it takes is one tiny spark to get the char material going and learn to make a birds nest, that and a couple big 1/2" x 6" rods could last a lifetime. Using good fatwood will also preserve that rod about the same as char cloth.

This would have been a fantastic camp / outdoor knife if they used 3mm stock instead of 5mm. Its too small to be a chopper and too thick to be a proper cutting machine. It will appeal ro the novice or maybe military if it had come with a kydex sheath.
