I adored Asterix and Obelix when I was a kid and this piqued my interest straight away when I saw it on the eshop. I actually enjoyed the xxl games but a brawler seems a perfect choice for the characters. I appreciate your highlighting the shortcomings but I wonder if fans may have a bit more tolerance for the repetition. For example, the pirates are a running joke in the books in that they regularly happen upon them and sink their ship. I wonder if that’s why those choices were made. Art style is gorgeous. Could be perfect for short handheld sessions like you say. Great review Alex.

Some trivia if anyone is interested. There is an Asterix game for the Atari 2600 that was released in 1983. It was identical to the game 'Taz' except for the character sprites. It was a PAL release with a very few NTSC copies made which makes it very rare in North America. Fortunately, Taz is a good game by Atari 2600 standards. Asterix & Obelix are unknown in the USA and the only reason I know about it was because I had a PAL version of the game in my 2600 collection and googled "Asterix" to figure out who or what the heck an 'Asterix' was.

A shame for the repetitiveness, the art direction feels very close to the source material and the animations look flawless!

I played the arcade beat em up all the time as a kid, it was actually made by konami which is surprising considering they are'nt the company that comes to mind when it comes to european video games.

The drawn comic book "yellow sound effects" in the game do seem to to clutter up the screen sometimes. Can it be turned off?

@SwitchCorner this is a bit off topic, but I've never been able to get into the trick chain genre, such as tony hawk pro skater. I've played so many games in the genre, but It has never clicked for me. I picked up urban trial tricky on black friday with the hopes I might finally get into the genre, and after maybe half an hour of playing, I finally got it. The multipliers and trick chains came together with me absolutely smashing the 1.5 million developer score on a level with 2.7 million points from one chain. I don't know where I'm going with this but I thought you might find it funny since you've been playing these games since childhood. Have a good day my fellow switch owner.

Streets of rage 4 is the best in recent years. The new survival mode is addicting rougue lite experience. New Battle toads is good as well but few too many mini game like diversions. Several other decent to good street of rage or final fight clones. Even karate kid one was halfway decent but bit corny at times.

Thanks for the review. Stumbled upon thie entry of the franchise couple of days ago and instantly was interested because of the good old snes vibes i got from this 2d brawler setup. Asking full price for a tedious somewhat simplistic game is too steep for my taste, will give it a shot in a year or so for sure based on the visuals alone.

I think I am more interested in the theme than the game itself. I have Streets of Rage 4 which fills my beat em up void but I will consider this on a sale price. Thanks for the review Alex. Excellent as always.

It's an honest brawler based on an amazing comic. Fans of the series will find a good game to use their favorite characters and I'd recommend this if you want an easy brawler to pass your time either solo or with a friend or your kid. There's also a limited edition physical copy, that comes with 3 lithographies (3 small sketches of Asterix, Obelix and a Roman Legionnaire), a set of stickers and a keychain.

I am with you on the xxl series, I got excited when xxl3 had multiplayer but the game turned out to be sort of underwhelming. This feels like a budget title though, I would love to see what this team could do with the same budget as the xxl games.

Probably said this before, I downloaded The Colouring Book from Qubic for free, which in turn gave me all Qubic purchases for less. Not sure if this still stands but worth looking into. I will be picking up Mana Spark, Arkane and Blazing Beaks at some point. Cheers Alex.

Thank gauls it's 60fps. A huge fan of Asterix & Obelix and all the 3d games look off, doesn't have any of that Roman thumping charm, missing a bit of that magic potion if you catch my mistletoe. But this one looks very true to the original art. Worried I might have to pass if it was 30fps, like many games that can reach 60 easy because the devs got too lazy. Definitely picking this one up.

I'd like to hear the game audio during your review instead of the random generated music.
@SwitchCorner3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately we would get hit with copyright strikes on many of these games, for example with this one, you can’t turn music off, if we do that they claim the video which gets it taken down
@Arnell_Mediocrity_Long3 жыл бұрын
@@SwitchCorner Ah okay, I should've thought of that before I made my comment...haha, I unfortunately didn't use common sense.
@SwitchCorner3 жыл бұрын
No Arnell! I'm with you on this one, I wish I could but the music in games is typically licensed so it's not the games studio claiming it but the creator. I get why they do it! More and more games are starting to add options though with what they call streamer soundtracks, it's made to protect those on Twitch but may be a very good option for youtube videos in the future if it catches in popularity!

Hardly any stores have this game, this reminds me of the problems I had buying certain Xbox 360 games at release many years ago. Only Game and Amazon have it question here is, is it worth the full asking price of £45? I did have it on pre-order for £36 but it was closed by the store last week citing stock issues.

The controls of this game feel REALLY bad. It´s really hard to explain. They are not smooth.. and they feel cheap. it does not feel like a proper classic beat em up. The controls / gameplay feel like a template made on flash. Even the animations look like a flash game.

Brawlers don't really vibe with me, and this seems like it would be fun with a friend, so I'll be passing on this. But it does look decent for those who enjoy brawlers and/or are fans of the original comics and characters to perhaps get on sale and play in shorter sessions. It seems that the visuals and audio are where the game really shines, despite some same-y looking environments. I'll be passing on this one though, but it seems like a good start for the devs. Thanks for the review.

Beat-em ups feel like a dated genre. The game play is very shallow. But hey, to each their own.

It's just simple pick up and play action. That's the core of the beat-em up genre. It's nice to go back in this sea of first person shooters and open world exploration games.
