If i remember correctly... The original was a christmas play or something... A father mourning his dead daughter. Hoping to see her again for one last time. He prayed every single day/night. And one day he had a vision of seeing the daughter return to earth as an angel. ... In the movie version, the play changed into some detective gangster theme.

You remember correctly but what you said is the difference between the theatre scene of the book and the movie, not the difference between the two versions of this song. I think they (or just Mandy) thought that the meaning of the song would be more accurate if it was about romance. Fun fact (fact? I read it somewhere and have believed it since then): Mandy was a Switchfoot fan already that time (I'd say probably for an even longer time actually), she brought them into the movie (I don't remember how yet) while they didn't even know who she was. :D (She couldn't blame them, sometimes Jon doesn't even know their own lyrics (which I think we can't blame him for, especially me, no one would call me an elephant for my memory (don't ask me why would someone do that, probably for several reasons)).)

As I was praying to the Lord today giving thanks for his goodness, I began to pray a prayer telling him that he is my only hope. That he is the only hope for my marriage to thrive, and grow to be more loving, but also for me as as an individual to be more like him. Reading my bible, going to church, trying to do good works will not do what Christ can do, he is my only hope for a change of heart. One night, I thought I was sinking into the river of death. It was my first anxiety attack. I was terrified, I didn't know what was happening. At 15 years old, I thought I have reached the last night of my life. I was convinced I was dying. I fought sleep, and I fought God. Eventually, I resigned myself to God's will, and lay down my head, not knowing what happened next. I told God I was ready for whatever he'd bring to me, or bring me through. He became my only hope. That's where God wants us! In this modern generation, we almost completely rely on medicine, security, law, and our rights. But what happens when we are beyond the reach of all of those things? What happens when we stand at the edge of the River of Death, and no lawyer, police officer, paramedic, doctor, or our closest friend and family can't save us? Well that night, as my eyes were closed, my heart raced, and I felt like my whole room was spinning. I kept them shut, not wanting to go back. I trusted God entirely, and it was hard. It's hard to trust someone we can't see, especially when we don't do it often. But God came through, and showed me I could rest my life in His hands. I woke up at around 6:30am (a few hours after I resigned myself), and I was like "Woah, I'm still alive!" I went back to sleep, and woke up in the morning, and am alive now. Sometimes you may think you're sinking, and about to drown, just trying to keep your mouth above water. When you're in that situation, just think to yourself, "Am I where God wants me?" because I believe God may let you encounter those situations, so you'll make God your only hope. Your only Savior. And trust me, He's not known as "Savior" for nothing! Just lie down in God's perfect will, and trust that wherever God brings you, if you belong to God, you will always be with Him; and if His will takes you away from this earth, God will not go to Hell, so neither will you! Just lift up your hands and let God take hold of them, and take you out, or through the Final River. Praise The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit, who is there, and in control, whether in death or in life! God bless!
