This video will show how to change the Flip Chip in a Specialized Stumpjumper. Switching it from the Low to the High setting will steepen the head angle by half a degree and raise the bottom bracket by about 5mm, and vice versa.

Another vote for not taking the linkage apart. I removed the top bolt from the shock, and then the bolt for the chip, switched it over and reassembled. Much quicker.

comes a bit late but: just let the air out the shock and remove the bolt of the chip^^ I just did it before I watched the video lol^^ *wrongorder but it was that easy-

I did this yesterday on my 2019 Stumpy 29er in 5 min. I did not even let air out of the shock. remove both bolts, pull shock out and flip the chip then re-install. It is almost as easy as the YT flip chip.

Clint, it sounds like there's a big shortcut, but thanks for doing this vid per the mfg instructions. While there may be a short way and a long way, what I learned was how meticulous one should be when wrenching around that carbon fiber--using cloths, torque stuff etc. You seem to take care--which is always a good reminder and lesson. Pedal on.

It really is. You can keep TWO spare tubes in there if you fold it tight. But one is fine. I keep a tube, 3 CO2 canisters, CO2 head, 2 Pedros levers, 4 spare chain links, and a mini chain breaker tool. I wrap all the metal stuff up in some kitchen drawer foam liners to keep it from slapping around the inside of the carbon frame.

Wow! Talk about a heart surgery! 😐 I'm one of those who think flipping the chip needs to be an "easy" task. More like pushing a button. Kind of like on the Canyon Strive Enduro bike with its Shapeshifter link.

My new SC 5010's flip chip is changeable in like 2 mins. I've changed it on trail twice. I'm surprised Specialized made it such a PITA to change. It's not hard, but having to fully remove the shock sucks, IMO.

Any idea how this differs from the 2016 Stumpjumper? I’m swapping to a 6Fattie setup and need to raise the BB and there is only the single bolt inline with the shock, so I’m pretty sure the shock needs to come completely off. I’m pretty sure this is just like the 2018 Enduro where it’s not a flip, but a matter of putting the spacer on one side or the other of the link. Unfortunately, videos and instructions are few and far between for the 2016 .... thanks for this video though, it certainly helps!

Just got the epic Evo expert and seems as the chip in LOW position. I ride Bull and Jake Mountain as well as Bearhoti loop. Would you leave it at low? I absolutely love the bike, have 4 rides on it and seriously considering selling my 2019 Hightower LT. I am noticing, that I have more pedal strikes.
@ClintGibbs

I would leave it in the low position so you can be a little bit more carefree on the downhills. But if the pedal strikes are absolutely killing you then set it in high.

Not killing, guess it's just I'm used to the Hightower. The 2021 epic evo expert is freaking amazing, the slack head tube angle is what sold me. I had to upgrade the drive train to XX1, but worth every penny. Hope to ride with you soon.

Good day Clint! I just want to ask your expert opinion since you have been well knowledgeable about Specialized Bikes. I am currently running a 2019 Specialized Stumpjumper comp alloy, 27.5 in size small. I have really been considering on upgrading my rear shock from the stock DPS to either Fox Dpx2 or Dvo t3 topaz. But I noticed that both these shocks have vertically mounting holes from the top and bottom wherein in my Dps the bottom mounting hole is positioned horizontally. Do you know if there is a proprietary adapter to fit these shocks (Dpx2/Dvo t3 topaz) or if there is a specific Dpx2 or Dvo T3 Topaz that is designed for stumpjumpers only. Thank you Clint and would appreciate any input that you would be giving me. Ride safe and God bless you and your Family always! 😀
@ClintGibbs
@ClintGibbs 4 жыл бұрын
I have not heard of a proprietary adapter, but that does not mean one does not exist. You should probably call Fox directly to see if they make something like that. I've contacted them on many occasions with questions and they are very helpful. Sorry I could not be of further help.

Does the flip chip work if you were to replace the shock with a new one from a different brand, such as fox, ohlins, or dvo?

Yes, as long as you get the same eye to eye measurement. The new stumpjumpers do not use a proprietary measurement so you should be able to find one that fits.

I did it today. Only difference I see is the shock and mount seem to have more separation (very minute diff). It took me only 5 min. Released the air from the shock, used a small rag to protect frame, took off only rear bolt. Flip chip , retorque, air up and boom..done.

Clamp the bike by the frame rather than seat post. The top part of the “side arm” works well. My stand can be twisted so the clamp mouth is horizontal. I know it probably doesn’t have much affect on the carbon, but less stress on it for sure.
@ratsac
@ratsac 5 жыл бұрын
Air D don’t do this on a carbon frame. Ever. MTB seat posts with droppers are especially beefy as well. Even if you have a Carbon seat tube on a carbon road bike, the seat tube is the better option. Much cheaper to replace than the frame if you do happen to damage this.

Slack position, steeper head angle, wth does this mean? this is pretty complicated for a "simple feature change." Specialized marketing implies the "flip chip" is an facile change, even for this dude who seems to know everything he's talking about. He took 5 cut scenes just to remove the shock from the bike.."once you get it off the bike it's easy." By virtue of the frustration in trying this, I know I'll never even try this to my SJ. Not to mention putting it back for different styles of riding, back and forth. It seems unnecessarily onerous, they could have designed it to be easier.. I wonder how much of the $3,000 I paid extra for this feature on my bike...
