So here’s the thing about the eye strain. It’s NOT due to the size of the display. The same issue used to happen with LCD screens in dark rooms. Basically it’s like having a flashlight pointed at your eyeballs for hours on end. Yes it being close does increase the effect. However, the solution is simply to lower the peak brightness.

but oled in general causes less eye strain because they naturally emit light, where as on LCD and Mini-LED panels, that back light is literally pointing at your eyes. But as close distances, i guess it doesn't matter, eye strain is likely.

On the point about headaches, I experienced this too when I switched to my 43 inch monitor last year, but after two weeks, the headaches completely went away and now it's simply the greatest monitor I've ever had. Granted, my desk is deeper than yours, so I am sitting further away, but I'm positive that sitting a few inches closer wouldn't have made any difference. It just takes some adjustment. This allows me to adjust my position to sit around 70-100cm from the screen and I find it perfect. I did have to increase the DPI of my mouse to make moving from side of the screen to the other faster however! The added benefit of my setup is that since the keyboard and mouse (and game controller) sit on the sliding shelf and the tv is on the wall, I have a nice big desk that I can keep clear (other than my PC case) for hobby-craft, present wrapping and the like!

60cm desk for me and no strain. It's no different to having two ultrawides stacked on top of each other.... If one screen gives you eyestrain, then sitting close to multiple smaller screens should achieve that effect as well (if not be worse, as everything would be smaller on screen).

I had a similar experience going from a 32" display to a 43" display. I loved it initially but I went back to the 32" after a couple months. I think for me, 32" is my upper limit. The strain I think comes from the center fo the screen being maybe 40-50cm from my eyes, but any client windows near the corners would be 70-80cm from my eyes. So while working with things like a browser, an IDE, a terminal, other things open at various spots on the screen, my eyes are repeatedly changing focus since some things are 20-30 cm further away. This coupled with the fact that I would actually have to rotate my neck quite a bit more than I do with a 27" or 32" monitor when looking from one side to another. I know this is the case with ultrawide monitors too but the difference is the vertical angle made it overall move movement/focus. I was disappointed that I had this issue though because I really wanted it to work out because I loved the amount of screen real estate I had as a result.

I'm running the 55" CX as a "monitor" although I have it on a mobile stand (wall with an adjustable mount would have been even better but the walls suck.) My desk has my computer etc on it, so all of my perphierals are wireless in a sense. Ideally I'd mount the PC to the wall and run purely wireless but I didn't feel like purchasing all new perpherials and worrying about battery life constantly. No headaches/eye strain even after 16hr with occasional breaks, although when I first got it I tried the same setup as you and it was indeed very uncomfortable. Pretty much it works although you have to adjust your setup around it to make it work, I'd suggest it to anyone that wants a kickass desktop monitor/TV in one rather than purchasing both. Do ensure that you can position it a decent distance from yourself though, I've found having the entire TV in view while also being able to see the wall around it on each side is ideal. I also keep the light in the room fairly low to avoid blinding myself with high brightness levels, which helps with protecting the screen as well I suppose. I generally only increase the brightness for movies where I'm much further away.

I've been using a lg C9 for more than a year now. Playing games on pc at least 4 hours a day and I've never done a pixel refresh so far. No burn in whatsoever no marks nothing. One thing though I've calibrated the tv myself and I make sure that brightness and such things are not as high as possible. Also blue light filter is always on maybe that helps maybe not but it sure helps my eyes and you forget really fast the fact that the picture is a little more yellow than without the filter. LOVE that tv the quality is insane, paired with a rtx3070 gsync activated etc it's just the best display I've ever had and for my next tv the G1 looks promising ;)

I have a 65" OLED TV quite far from me but I still experience fatigue after extended uses. I have come to believe that it happens due to the way brightness is handled in oled which causes flickering. We don't see it directly but can feel it. That seems to be the main reason while the other being the crazy contrast we get with HDR content. I don't think size directly is the issue IMHO.

I recently purchased a 48 CX and it was definitely too big for my desk. I was having eye strain too. The CX has a rather large base but I fell in love with the picture so I wall mounted it and slid my desk back several inches. I dont know if I will go back to a PC monitor any time soon. I guess it depends on the 2.1 HDMI coming out soon or I might wait to see if OLED has an even smaller display in 2021. I have no worries about burn in. Take breaks, turn on different content when you take breaks and use pixel refresh options every once in a while.

I had the Acer cg437kp from 2019-2020. 43 inch Gaming Monitor, AV panel, 1000nits, etc. Now I have the cx48. It is not too big. The oled is not as bright as the acer but the HDR performance is far superior because of blacklevels and contrast. So the picture has overall more punch, even compared to 1000nits Acer. The (uwqhd Lg has only 400 or 600, two models) Very pleasing and less stressing for the eyes. It auto dimms the withe browser window...and when you chose a video it brightens again very smooth. I am overall happy with the cx48 as monitor. By the way, the build in anti burn-in features are great. You don't have to babysit that Tv. Compared too the build and picture quality of the cx... the 43inch Asus, the 43inch Acer and the ultrawide 38inch LG monitors (like his on) are a way too overpriced!

As a previous UW user, I moved to a 43" Q60T. I would love to have an OLED version, but I fear burn-in would likely settle in. I've gotten bit by it on other TVs, and this would spend most of its time doing office work, so I just stuck with the Q60T. Ironically, I prefer the Q60's backlighting to my 82" Q90's which has a ton of bloom. The blacks on the Q60 are much better in that regard with zero bloom. It's also very color accurate according to my Xrite. UW is great if everything you have is compatible with it. I don't buy anyone who says burn in isn't an issue. Sure it won't happen to everyone within the first little bit, but once they get to be 3+ years it's going to be far more common, especially for those using it as a monitor or with very specific viewing/gaming patterns. If you expect to buy a new OLED every 3 or so years, sure don't sweat it. But if you expect TVs to last 10 years, all of a sudden OLED burn in seems very significantly more likely.

It might actually be ok for me because I'm a visually impaired programmer, using displays at closer-than-normal distances for like 20 years already. However, I've heard that some people are just too sensitive to something how OLED works? Not sure, but I've seen a few complaints about people being unable to use their TVs as monitors because their eyes start feeling some discomfort. Also, it is more difficult to be in an ergonomically correct position with such a large display. I like my monitor to always be below eye level because it is easier on eye muscles to look down, and also your eyelids are a natural moisture source to protect against "dry eyes" syndrome. I have my monitor mounted on a VESA arm. During my working day, I change my pose often to avoid getting stiff muscles, and then I can adjust my monitor to fit my pose well just by moving it around on the VESA arm.

I went with this tv a few months ago for my desktop monitor, and I can never go back to IPS. I didn't know IPS glow was such a problem until I used this TV. With IPS black or dark scenes have the IPS glow and it takes away from the immersion quality. With the LG CX 48 OLED, I love the picture quality, lighting in games just looks wayyyyyy better. I haven't had any issues, no headaches either. Just make sure you don't sit so close to it.
@javiej3 жыл бұрын
Great video, thanks for it. But I believe the headaches are not related with monitor size, aspect ratio or working at close distance. I said this because I had the same problem but inverted , in my case I olved it by switching from a smaller monitor 27" to a giant display (Dell 49" super wide ) , so in terms of size it was the opposite to your case. The headaches and fatigue instantly disappeared when using the 49". Then going back and forth between the two monitors and also a TV finally I found what was creating the problem and it was not size related at all: It was the glossy Vs matte display. Researching more about it, it happens that matte displays are much easier for the brain, specially when trying to resolve fine detail (which you don't do while watching TV at a distance ). So even if my new monitor is bigger and I work very close to it the matte finish solved the problem please note that I'm not specialist and it could be different for others, just sharing my personal case )

Made no sense and I couldn't fix it so back to Costco the TV went. I just bought a cheap-o 32" 2k LG IPS and grabbed my 6 year old Dell 27" 2k out of the basement to use as a 2nd monitor. I have the same setup. I noticed some fatigue as well. But for me, it ended up going away and i am very happy now. It was a lot like playing vr the first time. At least comparable in fatigue. Eventually just faded. Also, have you considered setting an ultrawide resolution on the tv and having black bars on top and bottom? Since it is the same price as other ultrawides, you wouldnt really be missing pixels. My worst part of the setup is the display's power saving features. The screen will go into soft sleep and disconnect from windows. Every time i unlock my computer i have to wait like 20 seconds as all of the screens figure themselves out and the tv restarts hdr, and low latency mode. Also 2 or 3 times gsync broke and the only fix was to yank cable and replug (and then play the display reconnect game). So really my only issue is the software gore. It just isnt as plyg and play as monitors. But it has been totally worth it despite all of that.

As someone who's used a 48 inch 4k tv as a monitor for a few years now, I think the biggest mistake someone can make is to try and just use it like one giant monitor, because if you're sat around working on a single maximsed window with small text all over the place, you'll be on a an express train to headache town. For my usage, I use Microsoft's power tools and Fancy Zones software to be able to divide the screen up in to 6 equal sections, and then snap windows in to those. If I want a window bigger I just expand it, but for anything short of games, I never have a single window filling the entire screen. Using it this way has been AMAZING working from home. Emails and MS Teams open up and the top, with a third window playing KZbin or Netflix, then excel and two work browser windows along the bottom. All that said, my partner absolutely hates using my setup, so it's definitely not for everyone!
