Are you thinking about selling all your full frame gear and switching to the Fujifilm X-T3 for wedding photography? In this video, I talk about my experiences with the X-T3 so far for wedding photography and explain the real reason why I made the switch from my Nikon D750. I also include real world sample images from weddings and engagements snot with the X-T3. And I discuss the main differences between the cameras including: size, weight, the EVF, color science, dynamic range, high ISO performance, continuous autofocus, lowlight autofocus, usability, buttons, controls and more. And I talk about my transition struggles and the workarounds I used to overcome them to fully integrate the Fujifilm X-T3 into my wedding photography workflow. You'll get the honest truth of what you can expect when switching to Fujifilm from full frame for wedding photography.
TLDR - Main reasons why I switched: • Switching to FUJI from...

I chose aps-c for the reasons you mention, but mostly for the lack of weight. I chose Fuji for being the only aps-c dedicated lenses system, and for the manual body controls. And because Fujifilm seems to listen to its customers, let us all Fuji shooters unite and shout: GIVE US BETTER BATTERIES!!!

Before I got my Fuji I had only worked with entry level Nikon APS-C. I felt like I had maxed out the capabilities of that camera to the point where I felt like the dynamic range/low light quality/AF capabilities were holding me back. I wanted a new camera and was in the same boat that you were. I was deciding whether to go to the D750 or the X-Pro2, but the OVF/EVF was the selling point for me. I am in the camp where I enjoy the inconspicuous nature of the X-series. I've shot entire weddings where the majority of the guests didn't know that I was the wedding photographer.

I did not switch, but I bought the Xt3 as a b Camera for 1080 120fps, I have almost all the L series lenses fast aperture canon lenses for my 6d MK 2 and I was told over and over by salesman that if I wanted 1080 120 that I would have to go to A7III or GH5, noone ever mentioned XT3 or XT2(which now has it after update) and KZbin NEVER recommended any of it even though I watch these kinds of reviews religiously. I am so happy with the Xt3 with Fringer adapter(canon lenses work great on Fuji, Some better then on canon) I barely use my canon anymore....for anything.

Good video. I am very surprised that you did nit go to the Nikon Z6. I struggled and had a Nikon D300 but owned a bunch of Nikon glass. I was so blown away by the Sony focus speed and Eye auto focus but when I looked through the Sony EVF I was totally turned off. As soon as I looked through the Nikon EVF I was blown away. Since I had so much Nikon glass I decided to try the Z6 and have no regrets. The angry photographer would agree with you he loves the XT3.

You are very generous with your knowledge and coming from a Nikon D750 myself, this was a really honest assessment - just what I needed. My reasoning was the cost of the new Nikon Z system and lugging a big heavy camera on holidays. Also, having had (lockdown) time to edit my photos, I realise I like the ones taken on my fuji more. Fuji shooter here. This is a really excellent video about the tradeoffs between Sony/Nikon FF and Fuji's system. Very well done. And your wedding photography is gorgeous. I'll be checking out your other vids. One nitpick: It's not the pixel size that gives FF an IQ advantage (though it is true that larger pixels look better at pixel level); it's the larger surface area of the sensor as a whole.

Great and honest video and love your photos. I switched from Sony A7Riii to X-T3, mainly for the weight and colour science. I want to keep one camera system for both serious work and casual shooting, and X-T3 allows me to do that. When I take everyday snapshots I use jpg and the great colour science & film simulation helped me skip the post process of raw files. I also totally agree with you, sacrificing the super high resolution, big dynamic range and best AF in mirrorless of my A7Riii, X-T3 made me a better photographer.

Wow, what an honest video. Since this is for people already shooting full frame, what would you say for someone coming from a cropped DSLR? I’m currently shooting the D500. I love the look of the camera itself, it’s smaller, better ISO capabilities, and I really dig their color profiles in-camera. I love my camera for how fast it is but it’s so heavy, especially when shooting receptions with a flash on it. And it’s also pretty noisy when I get over 1000 ISO.

Sometimes these explanations for changing systems is filled with so much "tech overload", you forget that they're talking about just taking a picture! You are a photographer! A good one! Just make it work! If you know your stuff, you can't mess this up! I have been using FUJI systems for nearly 5 years, focusing quirks, updates, and all. I love the challenges to my craft, and love the FUJI cameras! I own 4 cameras, not one of them is an X-T3, (will get one eventually), and I get paid. Loved the video! I have been a wedding photographer since 2010, and my reasons for switching to Fuji in 2016 after years with Canon (and owning 2 of every lens) was that it was a tool that worked well for what I wanted to use it for. With my edited work from Canon, and my edited work from Fuji side by side- I honestly couldn't tell the difference and I knew my brides wouldn't be able to tell either. The camera is small, EVF was huge for me, and not chimping was an amazing time-saver. Those reasons alone were everything to me. Things I don't like however- my flash rarely works on my camera for some reason (I'm using mechanical shutter)- so my husband has to take a lot of group shots and table shots during the reception. It does hunt a lot in the dark, and I am not 100% happy with the noise tolerance. You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned already seeing noise at 1600. It's frustrating- but not frustrating enough to get me to switch just because I've learned to work around it. The camera has forced me to be more creative. I'll check out your other videos! Thanks!

Glad you're sticking with the system. Yup, clients definitely can't tell at all, haha. And awesome that you've made adjustments to keep going and stay creative despite some technical roadblocks/obstacles that the Fuji sometimes has. Curious, what flash are you using on your cameras?

I know photography so i won’t use a camera in auto but as you say in the video fuji seems for people with higher skills... i need something easy to use maybe sony a7iii?
@Reggiebphoto
@Reggiebphoto 5 жыл бұрын
Naizon Travel the Fuji isn’t necessarily something for people with better skills. It’s just easier to shoot in low light with Sony. If you’re going for the casual route, it just depends on budget and size. Both systems have great longevity. But Sony is bigger and more expensive because of full frame glsss, and Fuji is slightly more compact and less expensive because of the apsc crop system

Reggie Ballesteros ok cool.. do you think that the fuji x-t30 is more then enough? I have 1500£ to spent on a nice camera. But if you say that fuji x-t30 is ok i will buy that.. but i don’t mind to spent more to get the fuji x-t3 aswell but everyone says that there is not much difference between the 2 fuji.. is a bit confusing. 🙏🏼

I had a t3i for years and sometimes when I’m in lowlight I try to save the highlights by shooting a little underexposed with a high iso for post but I would have a lot of grain when I brighten the raw file. I just know to expose to the right now. It’s still probably gonna be muddy but less grainy.

Great content. I have a very similar journey to Fuji as you. Feedback would be to slow down like others have mentioned - feels rushed or fatiguing. Also, I'm not sure if you're recording in long takes, but a lot of the dialogue sounds choppy or or sped up in spots (similar to a podcast app where it shortens pauses and silence) and making it sound robotic and unnatural.

An honest evaluation with good points for consideration. Fuji reignited my passion for photography back in 2015 when I started shooting with the x-t10. I’ve owned several bodies since then and most recently the x-t3. All have been wonderful in their own right and have helped me create many images that I am proud of. That being said, I’ve pined for a full frame since all the way back in 2012, and seeing a good deal on a new d750 I finally decided to pull the trigger. I still have my Fuji system, but it’s shelved for the time being while I learn the ins and outs of using a full frame dslr. I like both, but much like you, it’s not practical to maintain dual systems. I think the biggest takeaway from your video for me was regarding the EVF and whether having one or not will be the deciding factor. A quick note, since you mentioned the difficulty of charging all those batteries. It is possible to charge them directly while inside the body and the vertical grip without using separate chargers. Also, you’ve probably heard this already and I imagine you’re not looking to make any dramatic changes to your workflow, but you may want to give capture one a try if you want to get the absolute most out of your Fuji RAWs.
@Reggiebphoto
@Reggiebphoto 5 жыл бұрын
Yup the evf is really a big factor otherwise the d750 will serve you perfectly. And I have no interest in capture one at this point as I don’t find my raw files lacking in that regard. I’m totally satisfied with the final edited images. As far as battery charging goes. Im aware of that but during weddings I don’t want to carry around a powerbank with a cable connected to my camera while shooting.

one of the best and unbiased reviews. thankyou :) i made a step going to Sony's fullframe. you are right that light is important. however i do videos aswell. and iso usually when using log profiles are 800-6400 iso which is worst on apsc. because there's a need of exposing 2 stops higher. and the biggest deal breaker for me is battery life. sony z batteries are great :) and i use few lenses only. tamron 28-75 2.8, samyang 35 1.4, 16-35 f4 and 85 1.8 :)

Thank you, great honest video. I still have a d750 but i am switching to fuji (xt2 + 3). I am still holding on to the d750 as a back up and for extreme low light situations like live concert photography. I really only see the difference in quality is that noise of the fuji's at 6400 is about the same as nikon at 12800. My main concern are the 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8 FF glass there is just nothing to compare from a light gathering perspective. However i start working with the primes only anyways. My suggestion for you is to try Capture One. I found it to be way more responsive and faster. Many people also tell that C1 handles fuji files better (can't comment on that, never used lightroom for fuji files). For me, a faster work flow was worth the switch. I would do it again any day.
@Reggiebphoto
@Reggiebphoto 5 жыл бұрын
Lightroom is fine for me as you can see from the example photos. The 24-70 equiv on Fuji is the 16-55 2.8. And the 70-200 equiv is the 50-140 2.8. With that said I don’t use zooms.

Hey Reggie - marvellous video. You have explained this just so well. I have watched so many videos regarding the pros and cons of moving over to mirrorless - or Fuji more specifically, and this one touched on all the points in a non emotional and factual manner. I have the the X-T1, 2 X-T2's and the X-H1. The focus on them are still not up there with my old Nikon D3X (sold that 3 years ago to move over to Fuji), but knowing that no camera is perfect, my Fujis do most things well enough that I can happily live with them. I wish you all the best in your future photography and I look forward to more movies. Philip

This has been a very helpful video. I currently have a Nikon D-750 for my “big camera”, and an Olympus OMD-EM1-II for my “small” one. The Nikon is wonderful. But most of my photography is on the road, and I travel by motorcycle. It isn’t just the size. It’s also the fragility of the SLR mirror mechanism. I’ve had the experience of the mirror seeming to be stuck, or slow after a few hours of traveling. The Olympus is mirrorless, so that isn’t an issue, and of course it’s easier to store. The other thing that’s big for me is the Live View, for the reasons you described. The problem is, I’ve never been happy with the Oly’s colour balance. Reds in particular are lurid. I’m not really interested in fiddling around with post’. So I want decent J-pegs. All this to say I’ve become really curious about the Fuji. And this vid’ has answered allot of my questions.

It‘s really sad that people still have to suffer from sharpening issues with Fuji RAW files in Lightroom and I literally don‘t know why Adobe can‘t figure it out while other RAW engines, like Capture One, do it perfectly fine without any issues and artifacts. I’m a software engineer myself and there’s no excuse for Adobe to not get it right. People sometimes blame the Fujifilm sensor for worm artifacts but that just isn‘t an issue at all when I normally sharpen in Capture One. I literally just move the sharpening slider to the right and it does what it‘s supposed to do while Lightroom does some weird shit. And that the sensor isn’t the problem is made clear when you do some JPEG shooting with customized sharpening settings in camera, it perfectly sharpens the images and the JPEGs look amazing. I know that the camera processor is used for that, which is different from any computer processor and software, but what Lightroom does is just horrible. It‘s so annoying because not everyone can just switch to another editing software, some people rely on Lightroom for their workflow, so Adobe should finally get their shit together. It‘s the same with performance issues in Premier Pro and Lightroom, it‘s kind of embarrassing for such a huge company with focus on creative software.

Fabio Mota they have a larger market share and they can choose to abuse that power or serve the people. The Fujifilm user base is definitely the minority so while it isn’t ideal, I can understand why they haven’t made very much effort since most of the other user base is taken care of. Like you said I can’t just switch softwares, as my workflow depends on lightroom (for more than just sharpening or raw processing) so I stick with it for my business.

It was never a problem for me as when I was using the D810 we were always told never to sharpen in Lightroom and even for Nikon nef files all sharpen and noise reduction was set to zero on default import so when I moved to Fuji I didn't really get the problem. Lightroom was never great at any time for sharpen and output sharpening for print was done elsewhere usually in Photoshop. The more Lightroom expanded over the years more features appeared but sharpen was always not good. Ive been using Lightroom since day 1 at work and also use C1 which I'm still not sure about. Great for tethering but editing is a bit clunky (if that's a word) :-)

Great and honest review. I went from Canon to Fuji and and now ended up using both, found Fuji better with the longer lenses 50-140mm and the primes 90mm and 50mm lenses are Awesome and super sharp, but I prefer Canons 35mm prime and in generally the 24-70mm zoom on full frame can give you much better subject separation when you need it, Thats the beauty about fuji cameras, you can setup to use the dials as much or as little as you like, I personally like the top iso dial, but I dont use the shutter or exposure comp top dials, i prefer to setup the front command dial for shutter and rear command dial for exposure comp, and use the lens ring for aperture, How do you find the reliability any issues with XT3 doing weddings? I had a couple of hairy moments but nothing that impeded me in getting the shots, BTW for me I found The best dynamic range is at 640 iso or higher, just make sure your dynamic range setting is set to 400% im getting a bit better dynamic range on the XT3 compared to my Canon 1Dx, However the IDX sensor is now getting a bit old I think i have had it for 7 years now. Now I am in two minds whether i upgrade to canon mirrorless? or just deal with using Fuji wider lenses and get a second XT3 or XH2 down the track.

Thanks for the honest portrayal. I'm also running 2 systems at the moment for exactly the reasons you state. I do quite a bit of wildlife photography (as well as the occasional wedding) so the long fast Nikon glass is a factor for me. I used both my D850 and my XT-2 at a concert recently, and got good results with both, but had to work a little harder with the Fuji files, and felt a little vulnerable to making mistakes using both systems at the same time. Capture one is much better for Fuji files, less effort is involved than getting good results with Lightroom (though Lightroom is hard to give up because of the ease of round-tripping to photoshop, hdr and pano work). Yes, 2 systems has its issues.

Less effort is a relative term. I find it less effort to maintain the workflow that keeps my business running efficiently and clients happy. All the sharpening issues are fixed with one preset after I found the settings that works for me. I spend at most a minute or two per photo editing in Lightroom. No effort at all as I’m working with the “system” I’ve developed to deliver my look. It would be more effort to relearn what every slider does in capture one vs me just instinctually knowing what each photo needs in Lightroom.

@@Reggiebphoto Agreed. I tend to use C1P only for my personal projects and the bulk goes through Lightroom. I use import presets and have set up some Photoshop droplets which are accessed as Lightroom Export presets which helps me to automate several routine tasks. Recently I've stopped using Lightroom to capture sharpen any of my pictures though. I loved your images by the way!

Robin Glaze if I find the desire to experiment I’ll try it out. But I love lightroom as a tool, and I personally enjoy using it. Just as people Will adopt a “lesser” performing camera for its more initiative controls or just how it feels. I use lightroom cause I like the experience. Sure c1 might get better results. But I already love the results I get so not much left To be desired haha. And thanks for the kind words!

I am a D750 pro user in pervious 5 years and I have brought a x-pro3 recently, totally agree what you said. But for my working camera, I am still planning to shot with D780 as I have preordered too. I found D780 has fixed my main concerns on low lighting focusing and 4K video recording :)

I used XT3 for a month, lovvvved the experience, but after a long battle within myself went back to my D750 for lowlight performance and shallow DoF for portraits. If Fujifilm comes with a FF sensor with a similar body like XT3 they got all my money, and i can live without 30-FPS and 4K-60 considering the larger sensor may have some limitations. XT3 design is so elegant.

Great video, I don’t know if you have tried this but try using capture one instead of lightroom, the programming of capture one is optimized for the xtrans sensor and TRUST ME ON THIS ONE but the difference is amazing on all the problems you mentioned, dinamic range is improved by 100% at least no worms on sharpening and also it seams to process color different... I believe lightroom it’s now a better software but just not for fuji as seriously it takes the fuji files to an other level... you could also go back to shoot over exposed ;) Cheers mate, again great vid 🤙🏽

Reggie, supposedly the Z5 is the same sensor as the D750....In personally comparing both in real world shots, I've seen almost zero advantage of the Z5 over the X-t3 at higher ISOs with the X-T3 often outperforming it. Am I missing something?

Why I went with Fuji. For the first time Fuji made the art of photography fun again with its manual dial controls and ergonomics. Something Sony, Nikon and Canon suck at. Love my fun to use XT1 and really love my XT3. I import to LR all my raw photos with my favorite film simulation applied so all my raws are now a good starting and are raw making editing much faster.

Hi, your videos are the best about Fuji, and for who wants to change system. I sold my D610 (too bad af, too much work in post to get a simple look I like), and now looking for x-h1 kit which costs around 1100€ and x-t3 body only with separate metal grip which can be around 1400€ (I need for sure extra grip with it, i don't like the grip on x-t3, it doesn't cover perfectly the camera edges, bad to look at). On the x-h1 bundle I have 2 more batteries, better grip, ibis, and also can buy a 18-55 as starter zoom. But the af on x-t3 seems to be so better to let me forgive the old d610, more futureproof camera considering it when the firmware x-h1 can't do better on AF side. But x-t3 is smaller, have to buy metal handgrip and batteries, and no ibis. Hard decision for me. The only point about x-t3 is the new af, otherwise is perfect the x-h1 but not futureproof like the x-t3. What do you think? :)
@nerdMike
@nerdMike 5 жыл бұрын
the fact is.. I like fullframe, but I'm an amateur, around 1000€ for the body if fine for me and I like mirrorless more (no af fine tuning, ne image review after shoot, evf, etc..). But you can find only a7, a7m2 and eos rp as mirrorless fullframe camera into this budget area even on used market. I can't and won't spend 2000€ for a FF body only.
@Reggiebphoto

It ultimately depends on why you think you need ibis. Most people think they need it because they’ve read about it. For serious video you want real stabilizers, and for photo, if you take photos of people kids or anything moving, ibis doesn’t help as it won’t prevent motion blur of the subject. My vote would be xt3 but definitely try both of you can before making your decisions.

@@Reggiebphoto ibis for adapted or non stabilized lens like 16-55 2.8. Ibis on my lumix help with short handeld clip, not pro work. In fact I spend less with xh1 for a more comfortable and better materials body also. I save around 300€ and I have grip and spare batteries also with it. I'm worried u said the af is not like D750 expecially on afc, I thought xt3 was near sony A7 iii and a edge over old dslr 😕 the af was the only point to choose xt3 over xh1 but seems to be not so "great" in reality

Very nice video . You make great photography . I left Nikon (D810) for Sony (A7Riii) . Have to admit that I miss Nikon . Nikons feel so much better . Toying with the idea of getting a Z6 and selling the Sony . Maybe I missed it , but did you try the Z6? Thanks for sharing .

Love all the details and the honesty in this review Reggie. I do not shoot pro and started a bit more than a year ago with the XT2. Shoot family settings and I enjoy landscapes for myself. I have never shot a full frame but can see myself enjoying the better AF on say the Sony and low light performance. The menus and expensive/ heavier lenses are the turn off though. Maybe in a couple of years when I am ready for my next camera. Thanks again for all the info. Would you perhaps be willing to share some of your raw files from the D750 shot at higher iso so I could compare just what the noise looks like to my XT2. It would me much appreciated. Thanks again for the video

@@Reggiebphoto thanks for the reply. Sorry I probably skipped that part where you talked about it. My D700 served me well these years, but the form factor is more and more annoying since aps-c is surpassing my old 12 mpx sensor loll. My only concern is the price to pay for changing system. I just realized that my older AF lenses won't work with FTZ adaptor anyway ==.

@@papercut1987 yeah had i based my decision solely on wedding photography and performance shooting wedding photography, i would've easily went to the z6 or even switched over to the a7iii. but again, i made a concious effort to condense the two systems i had already owned down to two. the d750 wasn't my preferred form factor for day to day documentaiton of my family and personal work. so once the fuji felt like t could at least somewhat hold it's own for weddings, i took the plunge.
