I hear October lull a lot but I've never seen anything evidence in my area. I almost don't want to share this but here goes. This is the #1 tactic for getting matire bucks on their feet and getting them on their feet up to two hours before dark. Sneak into bedding you believe most likely for a mature to bed snd set up as far away from it as you can but where he should be able to hear it. Bucks hear little bucks running around grunting well before rut for no reason and they pay no attention to them, they are no competition. Extinguisher is the only grunter ever use. An hour and a half to tei hours before dark, set it to young buck. Do some grunts while turning your head to make it sound like the little one is on the move. Wait 5-10 minutes and set it to what would be a two and a half year old or even three and a half year old and do the exact same thing abd make ut soind luke he's on the move the same direction the little one went. Hearing something a little older might mean the little one actually had a reason this time and hes no longer going to ignore it. That may be all you need to do but what really seals the deal is doing that sequence so it sounds like they are going the opposite direction. That should do it but you can also set it to that same intermediate buck and change your longer drawn out cruising grunts from before to short and rapid while changing directions sporadically to sound like he finally got to her and he's chasing and harassing her. This will start to work from mid October until rut. I predominantly hunt from the ground and rarely have to make a shot over 10 yards. No need to rattle, you may cause him to be more cautious and those sequences make h much more relaxed when he shows up. You really cant rattle to make it sound like younger deer so ge will want to sneak around to see how big of opponents he may have to fight. He doesn't worry over those younger deer he was hearing, he already knows he's the boss of those two.
