She demonstrates crisp movements and strong stances. She also has a decent understanding. I offer a few critiques I saw. Please bear in mind that I specialize with Katana, Wakazashi, and Tanto exclusively. Ma'am, your edge alignment seems to twist on your follow-through. Even in basic strikes, it is better to lead blade first. Please do not waste energy on flourishes of anykind like unnecessary wrist spinning. Our way, the Kung Fu and Bushido way, is too kill as soon as possible. Also, an idea for future videos, why not demonstrate how to smoothly transition from slash to thrust in an opposite direction. This is a great way to get under armor or any obstruction an opponent may be wearing. Keep up the good content. Looking forward to part 2.

I am so sorry for anybody who came here seriously trying to learn. This is absolutely nothing like actual swordsmanship, Japanese or European. I don't blame it the person in the video necessarily, because this is how she was taught. Firstly, anyone who refers to a sword motion as a "chop" is not to be taken seriously. Swords are weapons used to cut and thrust, not chop and stab. I knew this, and yet, I continued watching out of curiosity. And then she starts to talk about the "pushing" and "pulling" hand. If you are seriously thinking about learning the katana, you need to know that THIS IS NOT HOW SWORDS WORK. They're not just massive blades you swing about however you please. In order to cut with the sword, particularly a curved one like the katana, it is important to employ the correct drawing motion as you cut. It's curved for a reason guys. I'm not going to explain the entire technique here, but it boils down to the back hand is used to "pull" the sword through your cut, while the top hand is used for "aiming" the cut. Again, this is an oversimplification, and should not be taken as a basis for training. Now that I've addressed the first 60 seconds of this awful instruction, let's move on to the footwork. Dear Lord in heaven, this is awful. The front stance is a taekwondo footwork used in kata. Not ripping on taekwondo here. I did taekwondo for years and loved it. However, the way you move in a kata is not applicable to a fight, much less a sword fight. Think about it this way: you come in with your horrible chopping attack, and that gets parried, like 90% of first intention attacks do in swordplay, you're now in a solid stance and can't move your body out of the way of the incoming counter attack. I don't often rant on the internet, but when I do, I have a damn good reason. For anyone who seriously considering learning the art of the sword, be that a katana or a long sword, I HIGHLY recommend that you look up HEMA, or kendo, or kenjitsu, or some form of sword focused martial art. The swordplay tacked on to karate and taekwondo is simply god-awful. Once again, this person here is only reiterating what she is taught, and I don't necessarily blame her for thinking these things. But spreading this ignorance just puts people in danger in an actual match. Rant finished.

One of the things I most admire about real Kenjutsu is you folks know how to "snap" the sword like real Wudang. This allows expression of real cutting power, without leaving yourself upen at the end of cuts. Astute viewers will recognize that she uses the action of the sword to generate power.

What I enjoy the most about watching women perform, is in most cases they have to perform the technique correctly (as we all should) but, men have more upper body strength and some guys perform the technique wrong because they're more focused on power. And it almost becomes like swinging a baseball bat instead of slicing. When I practice stay relaxed and focus my core energy (Ki) through my body. It's easier to execute and I find the speed and Power is easier to control. I feel one with the sword as if it's become part of me. Great video ! Thank you

Good form and beautifully executed movements and technique.. it’s good for recreational use and tbh if a situation permitted its use being able to apply this in a self protection situation couldnt save your life and deal with the threat. Movies, games, and videos definitely need the flashy movements however irl it means nothing when you get stabbed and completely run through. Learning iaido or a modern form of kenjutsu for armor battle sims or just recreation has been really fun..

@@SaifullahAlHamzaAzim I meant to say couldnt, this is likely one of my sleepy comments. Its definitely a better idea to not do flashy bs, however the possibility of still dealing with a threat in real combat is there it just dwindles as you face stronger opponenets in our little imagined scenario here. 2:18 if you do this with a sharp blade and miss, you will injure if not kill yourself. I was sent this by a friend and initially thought it to just be someone who seems to not have been trained in Kenjutsu or Iaijutsu a hollywood dojo without an understanding of the technical skill or philosophies of those arts. I was quite happy to move on and say nothing but this "stance" to me is very dangerous and someone untrained with a sharp blade attempting any of this will harm themselves. Please be more responsible and take some time to understand the sources of these arts as theres nothing here that looks even remotely close to actual sword fighting from the Japanese schools. I've been training these arts for almost a decade and I understand you arent claiming to represent either but this looks ridiculous and dangerous.
@Mr-Tibbster4 жыл бұрын
@Angry Capsicum I've studied both Western and Eastern (Chinese mainly) swordplay. The footwork here has no "martially" stable ground, no authentic sword art across in any culture has you walk this video. Very wide, asking for a groin kick, or a leg displacement (being pushed over or knocked aside, kicked in the knee joint, etc), and is too "heavy footed" in that it's slow, and doesn't provide versatile navigation or adaptabililty in the fight, it's stuck to the floor in a very awkward way (as opposed to being "firm to the floor" in a martially positive way). Even as a "form" (as some would argue and defend this type of performance, claiming it's like a "Kata for training"), it has no authenticity, since a form is meant to be a sequence of "real" techniques linked together in a dance like manner, there are none here. The routine she's doing is not found in any tradional sword art from the East or West. It's is not distinctly Chinese in movement style (I mention this as Chinese sword forms are the most theatrical and would be considered the closest to this), and Japanese forms contain none of this whatsoever, and she's using a Japanese weapon, meaning if it was authentic, she'd be doing either Kendo or Kenjutsu Katas (all of which are poised, short, sweet and to the point with no flash, usually with only one or two movements per set.). The sword strikes are flailing motions, rather than directed, and would lead to a "flat" hit, rather than an edge cut. Sword styles don't typically have you doing rapid continuous strikes in the manner shown here, as we have to consider "physics", ie; when you hit something, be it a person or an enemy sword, you will come to a stop, it's like hitting any other soild object, and so the martial art in swordsmanship must adress these physics (which is why they either use strikes that pull back and chamber away/detach from the opponent before hitting again, or they use "binding and winding", which is sticking to a sword after contact and working around it.) People don't think of these things because they are raised by video games and movies (which let's be honest, is why many of us get into loving swords and martial arts so much) where people do "combos" and hack through opponents as if physics didn't exist. XMA is showmanship that operates on this mentalilty, that hitting someone, or their weapon, will be like going through them with a lightsaber, but sword mechanics don't quite work like that. All she is doing, the footwork, mannerisms, mechanics, is typical of Modern movie combat and gymnastic tricking. As that's what XMA (extreme martial arts) is. Nothing against people who do it of course, it takes a lot of skill and fitness, which I highly respect, and it looks cool to watch.

@Angry Capsicum an untrained person who hasn't been given proper instruction cutting towards their own leg in a wide low stance can and will maim/kill themselves, i might sound like im being paranoid or ridiculous but not only is it the leading cause of self injury due to swords (cutting a waterbottle from right to left with the left leg forward and gouging themsevles for example) but I've seen it happen in one instance in real life by a well trained black belt who let nerves get the better of him in display with an audience and it broke his focus, luckily he was ok after being rushed to hospital

This is quite interesting. The sword looks subtly different to a Japanese katana, not as curved. Which sword art do these moves come from?

hollywood. these people have no idea how to actually use a sword. idiot doesnt even know the proper way to hold the thing. i would suggest, if your actually interested in the art of swordplay find someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

I am guessing an advanced form of Aikido. Aikido uses the katana very frequently.

Nahh your really do be getting tricked by this clusterfuck hollywood swordsmanship, first of all, all of this is horrible, horrible footwork, horrible handling with the sword because once you try this in real combat you would be killed less than 1 minute, if you are really trying to learn real swordsmanship i reccomend you not watching this horrible clusterfuck hollywood swordsmanship video

I have to agree that these moves are indeed cool, but only to flex or for recreational use, and only with non-sharpened blades.

Thorough breakdown of the maneuvers. Gotta try this with my bokkens at home. Any chance for fencing videos in the future?
