An additional tip regarding the downward cut from overhead: Using the push/pull energy of the katana (iaito, in your case), it can help the control at the end of the strike to think about pulling the offhand at the bottom of the handle (tsuka-gashira) forcefully toward your belt line (belt knot if wearing a gi).

@@SirRorschachJackshe keeps cutting towards her front leg. One example is when she cuts starting from high right with her left leg forward. Don’t ever do that with a sharp sword of you risk cutting your leg and ending up in the hospital or worse. If you’re going to cut from starting high right then your right leg needs to be forward to keep your left leg back and away from the sword stroke.
@BellhenderOfficialАй бұрын
@@alexanderren1097This exactly, too wide stances and that downward cut is something you just can't use for too many reasons 😅 Real fight is fast and when you do your moves fast there is no room for self hit error. She is pushing that blade far too back for the cut at start leaving everything open for strikes and she is going to cut her backside before even starting an attack when fast and stressed. That move could be only used as opener and there is far better and harder to read moves than that. Then the strike it self comes way too close to her feet. It hits the mat very easily and saying "stop slaying those floors" will get its meaning fast. Then the normal hits and turns blocks etc. If your opponent is in front of you then those strikes will most likely miss (they do pack a punch cause of turning technique, it's very good) but it's too wide and hits in funny directions 😅 Don't know how any of this is "basic" but ok, maybe her own "Extreme" sword fighting it is 😅 There is good stuff here and there and she is very ridiculously talented sword spinner (a real human beyblade) but that stuff ain't just useful in fight

Okay so.. striking downward towards your own leg is stupid, same like you said with blocking, you can cut/hit yourself. Second your blocking your head with the handle (or even your hands) arms need to be further behind you to make an effective block.

We always get told that we cut with the sword, so es should slide down instead of chop
@Cvm-vf1hy6 жыл бұрын
It depends a lot on what kind of sword you are using. As in this case she is wielding a Katana wich has a triangle shaped blade and is basically used to chop of stuff...like arms. So the technique is comparable to an axe strike rather than a knife. But you are right with your remark when you are using a chinese sword for example, that is rather used like a knife. You slice up your enemy quite nice, piece by piece.
@SebastianSchachner6 жыл бұрын
C. vm when you use a real katana you should slice, otherwise you ruin the sword
@Cvm-vf1hy6 жыл бұрын
A real Katana can actually cut through bones and even harder materials like armour pieces. The Samurai were practicing by cutting off arms and legs from criminals (until they found it too cruel semselves eventually and turned towards cutting straw mats for training, as you can see in one of the videos.). Your worst thought in a battle is not :"OMG, my sword will get scratches, I can't handle this!" It's more like :" OMG! How do I survive this sh**!?". I found a couple of videos here on youtube that hopefully will explain the difference between slicing and chopping moves : kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWO5dmt4oc9_r8U kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2HQgXarbrObeNU versus slicing with a straight chinese sword : kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3yznWeuh9CUkJI kzbin.info/www/bejne/pauTmmeLq7aap6s See the difference ? A Katana still has a sharp blade and therefore you can slice with it of course. So the truth is, as in most cases, somewhere in the middle. Hopefully that explains it better. Have fun watching :)
@NitroriN23 жыл бұрын
@@Cvm-vf1hy i disagree No sword can cut though bone or even armor thats bs. You can cut joints or break a bone but not truly cut it. Also the preferred way to deal damage with a sword cut is primally a mixture of chop and slice so yeah tho katana's curved blade sort of automatically slice a bit so it cuts better than a straight swords.
@NitroriN23 жыл бұрын
@@Cvm-vf1hy Also axe is not a sword Axes uses its mass to cut things swords uses your bodies mass and structure to cut.

These "techniques" look more like tricks then practical and effective moves. I really doubt they would be implemented effectively in sparing.
@itinerantpoet13412 жыл бұрын
What I see at 3:27 is: strike, counter, strike, counter, press. Those spinning movements in transition have application beyond simply generating power for cuts. Using an upward press instead of block will give you control of the opponent's sword, creating the opening for a definitive cut. Great posture, btw! I can see why she's a champion. Students should understand how important good body frame is for real speed and power.

@@GinXYZ I mean, to be fair, this is pretty much just watered-down bare-bones basics for those who have yet to discover HEMA, being developed through demonstrations of technical skill. It's not being applied in a practical way, but once upon a time this was the normal way of transmitting the art intergenerationally (with expert instruction as well, of course). It's just sad that she has to explain where to hold the thing and which way to hold the sharp end. Plus, I'm pretty sure putting the sword fully behind your head IS complete nonsense. It doesn't generate any more power as far as I'm aware, and leaves you much more open than a real high-guard would. It kind of like how amateurs pull their arms too far back when throwing haymakers. It's just pointless telegraphing. P.S. Unless you're stabbing at someone behind you over your head. That could theoretically work, but has way too low of a skill floor to be practical, and even then you wouldn't want it pointing down that far. It would give your stabbing bad body mechanics, and thus be a detriment to its power, and would seriously hurt your recovery time. Plus, if your sword held were directly above your head, that would give let you dish out a wicked pommel-strike, potentially countering an opponent stepping into your guard to avoid your attack.

Cool moves, but only for flexing or recreation with a dull blade, they wouldn't work in a real sword fight. For example The block - blocking an attack using your handle ain't good idea, your hands have like 99% chance to end up being cut, and this renders you unable to wield your sword anymore. Skilled warrior could changeThe angle to cut you from your shoulder, and there is no real way to counter this with a stance like this, especially having your Legs like this, 99% people skilled or not would use this oppurtunity to knock you down. Use your Legs to secure your balance and use your handguard (tsuba) to protect yourself, it was made for a reason
