Duncan Idaho...the Boba Fett of the Dune universe. I loved the character so much as a kid, when I got the Avalon Hill boardgame I was so pissed that he was only rated at 2 (with a maximum of 7) as a leader I changed him to 5. I didn't realize then that I defaced a piece of a soon-to-be rare and valuable game, but still....Duncan killed NINETEEN Sardaukar!

Except, unlike Boba Fett, Duncan Idaho was actually a badass. No matter what retconned nonsense they've since some up with, the fact of the matter is that Boba Fett died when knocked into the Sarlacc pit by a blinded Han Solo. Boba Fett hadn't done anything to deserve the fanbase he got, and the only reason they retconned the ridiculous survival was due to said fanbase. All he ever did in the original series was stand around and look cool, and do a bito f basic tracking. Duncan Idaho, on the other hand was a certified badass who and was proved to be one over and over from the very beginning.
@msMagoo825

@@earthknight60 My analogy wasn’t because of badass-ness…it’s because both characters were loved by the fans despite having minimal “screen time” in their respective stories before they met their initial demises, in Duncan’s case the author brought him back to life, so to speak. I can’t remember where I read it, but a few years ago I learned that Herbert found a way to bring him back because of fan letters after the release of the first book. But I agree…Duncan Idaho was a total badass, and Boba Fett was as well but from a reputation built off-screen back in the day.

and seriously injured how many more... I always pictured his training being something like the Bene Gesserit, that merging of mind and action, that anticipates the movements of an opponent, on or off the battlefield. Sometimes the book depicted him a little simple minded, the princes Irulan who, actually never met him and despised all who had brought her house down and, were more valued to Paul... getting her revenge in print... ;-)

Agreed jess , I have seen similar things in other communities supposition that is passed on as obvious fact , yet with little text or logic sometimes or based on something the author said and authors even the best ones make mistakes or contradict themselves accidentally. Even Frank Hubert for example in children of dune prince faradan is said to be the grandson of shaddam and in another his nephew ( making the .mother either a daughter or a sister both named winsicia which is very possible)

There is another resource for all things Dune: The Dune Encyclopedia. It was approved by Frank Herbert, although he reserved the right to write the story how he saw it unfolding. The DE stopped after God Emperor of Dune (fourth book). I found the entries amazingly detailed and extremely well thought out. I rely on it for info of the Dune universe more than on Herbert's son's writing which isn't as deep and rich as his father's.

An adaptation like that would be so differ to Dune in tone (which it’s supposed to be since the basis of everything in the Dune universe takes place after this event) it would more closely resemble the Terminator than anything else. On second thought it might be a way to actually get the damn future war story we saw in T1 and T2

I like that Brian Herbert tried to expand on the Swordmasters of Ginaz, but the development of that kind of combat doesn't make sense to me during that time period. It seems like he shoehorned that first swordmaster into the story just because he just wanted to also shed some light on another aspect of his father's work. The battle of Corrin is supposed to be 10k years before Dune. So that makes little sense to me that a guy developes a fighting style with swords to fight on a battlefield dominated by energy and long range weapons. Also he trains and developes the perfect style to counter personal shields, and this dynamic is held relatively unchanged for 10,000 years? It's too much a leap in logic for me to see the Ginaz begin, develope, and reach their prowess and reputation in such a short time where their skills aren't particularly useful but then stick around for such an unbelievably short time. Yes, I'm aware that one of the themes in Dune is that civilization has stagnated and hasn't developed for centuries. But centuries is still less than millennia.

If I remember, the Dune stories where not dominated by long range weapons, they use of the in the attack on Arrakis, was a violation of codes and common sense. Projectile weapons were rare because they triggered extreme explosions when they contacted a shield. That was how the caught the Atreides by surprise, and demonstrates the emperor and harkonnans working together. The laser looking weapons in the movie, I don't remember them in the book at all... just think of Frodo, dueling the Nazgul (who can sense the ring) on the margins of Mordor (Frodo, dueling) when the entire plot is the secrecy of him not being detected through a series of "coincidences" and hence, about to slip into the land of the enemy with the ring the enemy desires above all things... heh heh... As friends tell me, "you are supposed to ignore all that (plot failure) and enjoy the movie" (never mind) . As a character in the other great Herbert books said, "mind is, ever".
@beezzarro
@beezzarro 2 жыл бұрын
@@cerir4033 yes you're almost there. It's not a violation of any codes. It's just that shield usage is so widespread that they have made countered projectile weapons to the point that swords have come back into usage as the only dependable way to penetrate them. Laser weapons cause explosions comparable to a nuclear blast in either the weapon itself or a shield when the stream interacts with an active shield. My comment is based on the time period in the video. The BRIAN Herbert books are set 10k years before dune during the butlerian jihad where shields are just being developed and long range weapons are the state of the art of warfare at the time

Isn't it interesting that ever since the dawn of Man, wars and combat have featured prominently in virtually all our stories and history. The Dune novels are supposed to take place some 10,000+ years into the future and we still like to project that love-hate relationship with combat and war. I wonder if that says something about us humans.

Microsoft and amazon, maneuvering to eliminate the competition, Rodney king saying, "can't we all just get along" amazing when you think about it, Bezos, isn't rich enough? Or, powerful enough why does that always make the hair on my neck stand up? and competition, is good for a business, look at the failings in businesses like Microsoft, no one to keep them on their game.. they serve problems to their customers and say, "what choice do you have?" and oh, you can pay more for it this year. I could imagine the damage it could do to humans, unstoppable by anyone without major weapons... made me think of the lack of responsibility shown by too many in innovation without common sense, how they are so often protected by the politicians they support and, the Butlerian Jihad... it brought the Dune stories I had read to real life... what, in the early 70's, I can remember reading it in the red light of the x-ray developing room, yes, we developed them by hand in those days... finding excuses to shut the lab door so I could read more... this is the first Dune that looks more like my visualization of the architecture and the people... with the usual special effects overkill... but, it won't spoil it for me. Though, I always pictured the secret computer rooms under the castle, it isn't human nature to through out great tools, and the dueling robots Paul practices with in the books are clearly robots... are they in the movie?

I wonder how the various royal houses obtained the services of top swordmaster trainees from Ginaz like Duncan Idaho. One possibility might have been that top swordmaster trainees may have sought employment by presenting themselves to Houses that attracted them just as contemporary graduate students seek employment with companies or corporations that offer the kind of work that the applicant has trained for partly because they like the prospective employer's work ethic and atmosphere. So, Duncan might have sought employment with House Atradies because he wanted to serve a Duke with his kind of elevated moral code. Or was it more common for a House to comb a graduating class from Ginaz in search of a swordmaster in the same way that employers send headhunters to examine graduating university classes to find desirable employees?

Agree with Damian’s statement. In addition, the Fremen were not used to fighting in mass engagements. Much of their fighting was skirmishes with smugglers, or even small Harkonen patrols; but mostly personal one-on-one fighting according to their cultural codes. When Paul and Jessica trained them in the Weirding Way, and combat tactics, that changed. Also, Crysknives had to be kept close to the body, to the bioelectric field of a person, to maintain their edge and combat sturdiness. A sword would be too long to make that easily feasible. There may also be a religious component to consider, regarding taking teeth from the Makers, and what size was acceptable. Since Fremen likely did not kill full grown sandworms due to their size, their religious view of the sandworms, and the fact that dead sandworms turned back into sandtrout; the teeth that made crysknives were most likely those of Little Makers that were drowned by the Fremen to harvest the waters of life.

Not that this will lessen my anticipation for the movie at all and it's understandable to have JM on board. Like Chalamet and Zendaya, Jason strongly appeals to a certain demographic and this sort of role is only going to enhance and enlarge said demographics. My other concern is long term. The Dune series has one constant character, does JM have the acting chops to pull off the complexities which grow with each book of Duncan Idaho.

@the_mighty_bearcat
@the_mighty_bearcat 3 жыл бұрын
By the time of the novel Dune, lasguns were no longer commonly used due to the prevalence of shields. The nuclear devastation of the meeting of the two technologies was never fully calculable, and thus, too chaotic to chance. Also, the use of such a tactic would invariably not only cause far more collateral damage to raid-able wealth sources such as royal house spice caches, but would be immediately deemed illegal use of atomics by the Landsraad ... and be punished by the remainder of the Landsraad. Remember, the universe if Dune is not one of brute force, but of subterfuge. The Landsraad did hold power to keep even the Emperor , and other houses, from going too rogue. It was an extremely illegal and immoral thing Shadam V did by sending Sardukar troops to aide the Harkonens in defeating the Atriedes. Many houses liked Duke Leto. If the Landsraad on the whole new about it, they may have overthrown Shadam V. Your question, while valid. Is much like asking: “why doesn’t North Korea just nuke the US, or China just nuke Australia or India?” Answer: political pressure from other nations keeps them in line just enough. The collateral damage alone would put all the resources in those countries to waste. If they did such a thing, the rest of the world may nuke the crap out of them. No house would be safe if there was a rogue house out there willing to do such a thing.

@@thecocktailian2091 yes I only read the later books myself a few months ago , I read the first 3 and stopped but the story only really gets going in book 3 just in writing and character/story 4 and 5 are amazing. It's very much like each book is a part of a two part story one and two is Paul , 3 and 4 are his children his son especially , and so on . I wouldn't like to spoil anything but there are significant time jumps like inbetween the books you read is 12 years but later books the jumps get much longer thousands of years and you see the consequences on civilisation from Paul and his descendants and you also get much more of an understanding of the sisterhood and the universe. I got the audiobook versions which were wonderful the voice acting is great . Some of them are free on KZbin or you can listen to aan audio clip for free to see if you like it .

Malee combat is the best and most honorable combat. you have your opponent in front of you and it depends on skill , a fair fight. guns are effective but cowardly, its good that in the future and with the invention of body shields swords daggers and spears are back with force, off course there is lasguns but they are not used much due to catastrophic reaction with the shields.

Great vid. Cheers. I was thinking though, surely if martial skill with a blade was a primary mode of attack then swords would get longer as materials got stronger and lighter. I mean the whole point is to be able to get somebody without putting yourself in danger of their reach. Spears have been about since the dawn of humankind, I believe some were found that were like 50,000 years old so maybe spears should have been the primary battlefield weapon in Dune. Thanks again for the upload.
@thecocktailian2091
@thecocktailian2091 3 жыл бұрын
A sword can only reach a certain length before it becomes completely unwieldy. A spear is indeed a battlefield weapon, and while right and logical to think this weapon would be focal point in a battlefield, the weapon has no place anywhere else. The sword/ knife then becomes principle for daily defense, and therefore a focus of training.

As a trained and practicing swordsman, I can say that the advantages to weapons are not only reach. Once inside someones effective reach with a pole-arm, or longsword; a dagger, shortsword, rapier, or saber, is much more wieldy and effective. There is no “my sword is longer therefore I win” doctrine, as there may be in video games, or organized field battle tactics.
@connorwheatley5640
@connorwheatley5640 Жыл бұрын
I'd imagine that a 'Historical Martial Arts' take on Dune would see Spears, Two-Handed Swords, and various Polearms as the majority of weapons on screen. The shorter blades we see in the 2021 film would be fine as sidearms but poor primary weapons on the battlefield, so you're not wrong but I doubt we'd see Swords longer than a typical Zweihander or Claymore that aren't bearing swords meant for ceremony

As I remember it, contact with a shield from a lasegun had unpredictable results. It could result in as little as just shorting out the shield alone, blowing up the lasegun or result in it's most feared reaction, a nuclear explosion. It did not always cause one. The unpredictable reaction of a lasegun hitting a holtzman shield made using laseguns extremely risky, thus blade fighting became the dominant form of house to house combat.
@MonMalthias

This if anything is the weakest point of the Dune universe. If a phenomenon is widely known, it can and will be exploited as a weapon of war. And if anything, such a device being perfected - that of a predictable nuclear explosion from a lasgun-shield interaction, would invalidate the Dune universe's justification for melee combat returning to warfare altogether. It was artillery that ended melee in modern history; nuclear artillery would invalidate it even moreso. Dune demonstrated telepresence with the hunter-seeker scene. It would be a simple matter of having a heavier drone set up to fire at a shield - or even integrate a lasgun into its body then fire it into a shielded object. It doesn't matter if it's not reliable - the mere presence of spaceflight implies a certain level of mass production. Even a one in ten thousand chance, with expendable lasgun and/or shield modules in magazines with a fleet of 10 drones, would result in an explosion. Thus the prospect of mini-nukes - and thereby the requirement to spread out manpower across large distances would return - making decisive melee engagements with blocs of men clashing militarily unfeasible. Now you might bleat about "but what about the laws of war" but the reality of the matter is that just because something is banned in warfare, doesn't mean it can't or won't be used. If anything such a weapon would produce large scale attempts to replicate it across all belligerent parties, as it directly bypasses arms limitations on use of atomics; while laser and shield technology is widely proliferated. Fissile material can be tracked from space with gamma detectors, and are more controllable than something so commonplace as a shield. It requires massive intrastructure to create and deploy nuclear weapons - even moreso in a universe that has reverted to human labour instead of machine labour for manufacture. Even if all it did was short out both lasgun and shield - you've just created a plot hole where Dr Yueh needs to lower the House shields on Arrakis. The Harkonnens would merely have needed a drone and a lasgun: the betrayal becomes needless drama. If Frank Herbert had thought more deeply about the political economy of warfare - and look, I don't blame him as he was an ecologist and not a soldier - then this point would have never made it to print.

@@MonMalthias it’s not really that much of a plot hole. It’s banned by the great convention so if someone were to do this they would immediately be taken out the the combined forces of the rest of the imperium. Also the harrkonnens we’re trying to smuggle lazguns onto the planet which is why Leto was wary to activate his shield

Eh. Warhammer 40,000 is an amalgamation of different Sci Fi lore. Their space travel shares a lot of similarities with Dune, but with minor twists. The style of government is also similar, but the Imperium of Man in Warhammer 40k has its own issues with infighting due to Heretics rather than the cloak and dagger style events that can be seen in Dune. I love both universes and think they offer their own neat settings. Each handles aspects of human life that can draw similarities, but at the same time are distinct enough from one another. An Imperial citizen in 40k is but a cog in the machine or literal tithe to be paid in some cases. Dune treats humanity as a precious resource in regards to what can be achieved (Bene Gesserit, Mentats, Soldiers like Sardaukar, etc). The Imperium of Man in Warhammer is also beset on all sides by aliens while dealing with their own issues. Of course since Warhammer was created well after Dune you can see its influences on it in addition to other influences like Aliens, Starship Troopers (power armour from the novels), and a few others. Warhammer's Great Crusade setting before the Heresy is actually a really neat setting if that catches your interest. I've been particularly interested in the Unification Wars and the Thunder Warriors, but unfortunately there isn't too much detail on that time period compared to the rest of the 40k timeline.

As a sword fighting enthusiast of many years, as it’s a big part of my job, I don’t feel like I’ve seen a decent portrayal of this “fast on defense, slow on attack” methodology. In the two latest films (I can’t imagine sitting through the Sci-Fi channel thing), everyone is moving at about the same speed all the time, and you just see the blue and red flashes. In the Lynch project it seemed closer, but the little pocket knives were ludicrous.
