So what do you think ... SUBARU BEATS LAND ROVERS ?!
@vincentwindels3752

Sure they do and you know it ! For example, it took at least 6 attempts for the green Land Rover to pass the ravine at 11:15 but only 2 attempts for the grey Forester.... If you have more footage of that day, I'm keen to see it !

I would say the Foresters really gave a good match to the Defenders. One striking difference is the tyres, the Defenders both had 100% offroad tyres, just helps out a lot. You could also see they had diff locks, which gives you such an advantage offroad. Lower gear ratios gives more control and lower speeds. But hey the Defenders are built for offroading, but oh my, try driving them on the road 😅 Subaru sg 2005, 2.0 n/a with dual range gearbox, 2" lift front, 2,5" lift back, 225/70r15 Yokohama Geolandar is what I drive, fantastic car onroad and offroad 🤙

Really cool seeing the Foresters along with the Landys. The white dccd quaife low range model seems to struggle more than I expected. A trick I learned with the torque biasing diffs (quaife, torsen etc) is all wheels need resistance to bias the torque. Rav4 boys tug the handbrake on a little to resist the spinning wheel so if you drag the brake it'll keep drive to all wheels. Tricky with a clutch also I know but something to consider. Super cool trip and beautiful countryside 😊

Great Video, I bush bashed a 2000 forester round Australia for years. I just had all terrain tyres and lifted springs. I am not sure if the Aussie models are different spec, but in the non-turbo we had low range and I am not sure if the diff's are different but I never had it spinning a single wheel like that, even with only two wheels on the ground, it was always like it had lsd's in all 3 diffs. One of my greatest pleasures was always showing up the "proper" 4wd's in the tough stuff, the short and narrow wheel base lets you stay out of the deep tyre ruts and choose any line you like. Keep up the good work and enjoy that Subi. P.s. start saving now for driveshafts as you're going to kill cv's fairly quickly, especially with a lift.
@vincentwindels3752
@vincentwindels3752 6 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm.....you should give us the recipe of how your Forester didn't spin a single wheel...
@madazz01
@madazz01 6 жыл бұрын
Vincent Windels Sorry, I didn't mean it never spun the wheels at all, I spun them plenty, but those are spinning one wheel and losing drive, maybe just too hard on the throttle. I never spun a single wheel that hard and lost drive, but I did kill the viscous centre diff after a while. I had the 1981 leone 1.8 wagon, with big wheels and a lift and that was a locked driveline in low 4, I had two of the 1990 L-series wagons and they were good, but nothing like the Leone, and the forrester was kinda in between. ( A Leone is a station wagon of the Brumby or Brat ute.) Anyway keep on having fun.
@ALNSMOVERLAND
@ALNSMOVERLAND 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate ! I also really love the size of the foz that let you take lines that real 4wd don't even consider ! For that wheel spinning story I don't really know what to say ahaha but yeah to much throttle won't help I guess... And I'm a big fan of the Leone ! they are beasts with tires and lift !
@SLADE330
@SLADE330 6 жыл бұрын
I have an outback and that has open diffs. Because of the viscous hub you can still power out with one wheel in the air because it will transfer drive to the back or front. If you have two wheels in the air then your in trouble. In most cases you can roll back and get three back on the ground and still push through. A locking rear diff would be good if you can get one.

Hey trying to find out more about Forester 4 wheel drive system. Looks to me that as long as they've got wheels on ground they re unstoppable, only problem is when you go on a twist... Can you manually lock the center diff? Front and rear diffs should be free as long as i've understood. So ever thought about fitting an aftermarket lock to rear diff? Does it exist? Do you have low gear on yours? Haven't catch a video where you use it yet. Thanks for reading this, keep rockin!

Thanks mate! You are right, with all wheels on the ground they are unstoppable! 🔥 Center diff lock exists and it's called DCCD, probably a future upgrade for my foz 😉 I do have a low range which is very helpful on the trails. Limited slip diff exists and rear diff auto locker (torQ locker)

@@ALNSMOVERLAND Hey I finally bought an Outback year 2002, tested it a bit in the summer. Considering buying the torq self locking diff for the rear. Do you have experience with that? About the factory low range is ok but coming from a Pajero i'd like it to be much shorter. Are you using the factory low gears or you went for an aftermarket solution? I went searching on the tactifoz specs ;) but haven't seen that. Thanks for posting that list! I'm going thru the items and the brands.

Dont think I'd want to take my forester on those rough trails as I prefer my car shiny with no scratches but with that said I'd like to go on a more subdued trail with hills and river crossings rather than deep ruts and rocks. Your crew are a courageous for taking on such difficult trails with vehicles that predominantly have open differentials. I'm assuming the Foresters with open differentials at the front and back are to eventually get clutch-type limited slip differentials? Subaru vehicles with VDC can make it up those obstacles easier as the traction control transfers torque to the wheel with grip when one side is slipping.

@AWDfreak

ALNSM OVERLAND - If you encounter prolonged downhill braking (where engine braking in lower gears proves too weak to keep vehicle speed safely low), you may also want to consider upgrading the brake pads and brake fluid. Stock, lower consumer-grade brake pads have a maximum operating temperature of about 300 degrees Celsius. You may want to consider searching for brake pads that work safely to at least 400-600 degrees Celsius, perhaps even more if you also drive very fast on paved winding roads. I have taken my Subaru XV (Crosstrek) many places, and cheap consumer-grade brake pads have proven to be both insufficient and unsafe for off-road use as well as fast winding road driving. I would recommend looking at the Ferodo DS2500 brake pad compound as a baseline, as it is safe to use even when cold, has a lower friction rating ideal for slippery surfaces such as found in off-road driving, and has a reasonable maximum operating temperature of 500 degrees Celsius, sufficient for anything except for extreme brake use such as done in rally racing type of driving.

Wow, that was quite rough going in places, adding spacers on the foresters is useful as protects arches better in ditches and helps stability, good lift of 3 or 4" and bigger tyres to compliment is a must too to save damage and fight those landrovers more evenly matched . I think you wise go around couple of those stages as could of damaged the fozz as yours more a 50/50 road and offroad plus your daily wagon. Is impressive where they will go, custom suspension and better rear diff and they will scare a landrover . Being narrow they good in woods and overgrowing tracks .

None of the Foresters is stock, they have all been slightly modified.....more or less !
@mrb1864
@mrb1864 5 жыл бұрын
Once getting that rough they need modding beyond basic lift blocks, 3 or 4" suspension lift with lengthened trailing arm and poly bushes and custom struts if want best droop, add 2 to 4" bigger tyre diameter and bit extra track gives 1 to 2" full clearance lift plus protects sides of wagon in those ditches as wheels too recessed on the foz . Diffs need addressing, either atb or locker if doing lot of ditch/rock crawling. standard viscous diff has quite low viscosity fluid and mixed with size it doesn't transer much torque . Was impressed how well they done for what basically an awd station wagon out the factory :-) Very underrated is the old SF Forester . Does anyone do custom low range gear set ?

There is a description of each vehicule at the beginning of the video. The beige Forester is closest to stock and the grey the most modified. All 3 have dual range from stock.
@mrb1864
@mrb1864 5 жыл бұрын
Yes I see that, assume they all stock low range gearing, lower gearset like from L series or the after,arket ones gets useful for things they doing on this trail . The grey sf showed benefit of lift and large tyres giving further full lift lift below suspension arms . Wouldn't take much work make them even better . was great viewing .
@vincentwindels3752
@vincentwindels3752 5 жыл бұрын
A few more mods could be done to the grey Forester. As it already has helical diffs (Quaife ATB) front and rear, it would be nice to retrofit a traction control powered with an Arduino processor through the ABS, it would prevent wheel spin when diagonal spin occurs but I'm no good with electronics.... It already has maximum wheel travel possible without a body lift, 24cm front/27cm rear but I don't want to body lift it because its my daily driver. Another option could be an R180 ARB or Eaton rear diff lock but I really like the way the helical diffs work on most surfaces. What you don't see on the vid is that the grey Forester did everything with relative ease and the orange Land Rover has Detroit Lockers front and rear. In mild offroading, I think that a well prepared Forester is the vehicule to go thanks to its versatility but when it comes to hard or extreme, no doubt that a Land Rover, a Mercedes G, a Jeep Wrangler or similar are the kings !
